Let's Talk About Plus Size Cosplay

Ойын-сауық

Hey, guys! First and foremost, this video is for cosplayers, no matter what size or shape.
Second, this is an idea that has been near and dear to me for a while now. Back in November I conceived this video idea and I'm so glad to finally see it come to fruition.
Thank you again to everyone who gave some of their time and volunteered to answer the questions I asked, I appreciate each and every one of you who gave me some input!

If you want to see another subject like this covered, make sure to leave a comment, we really enjoy doing this series so far and look forward to doing more!

Bless this video. I consider myself a plus size cosplayer ((12y/o, 245 lb, 5'2, 2XL in us sizes)) and the majory of times i have to make my own costumes. I am currently working on a bit revealing cosplay ((Reverse! Falls Mable Gleeful)) and ive been advised by,followers, friends, family to not do the cosplay because it looks weird. Ive been told online that i cant cosplay certian charaters, and sometimes ive retired or completely changed my cosplay. So, this vid defiantly brought up my confidence! Thanks!~@Teacup.Cosplays

We are plus sized cosplayers, and we feel this so much. A lot of people actually haven't told us that we're too big for cosplay, ,but we always feel like we are and it's stopped us from being some of our favorite characters. We always feel like we have to be perfect with our cosplays because we're chubbier. But we agree, it should be about having fun and showing off our favorite characters, not about being perfect. We really liked this video, thank you! :)

I'm also 5'10". I find it hard shopping for cosplay specifics. Finding footed tights is especially hard because I'm tall and fat. I actually like my height. I learned to be proud of it but certain problems I have didn't just go away when I accepted my body. I can't wear many dresses or skirts and not feel like I'm exposing too much. Being tall can be fun, but I understand what you mean when you feel weird cosplaying someone who has a generally petite build.

It's hard sometimes for sure - a lot of people go through the same struggles of feeling insecure about themselves in cosplay so you're definitely not alone! Sometimes its best to take baby steps - doing make up tests, taking selfies, then going out and about when you're feeling up to it! It takes a lot for us to go places to take photos or shoot videos - especially when we are having a hard time about how we look. But having those close friends with you makes a lot of difference! Remember to first and foremost have fun! -Tavaroo

WHY DOESN'T THIS HAVE MORE LIKES??? WHERE MY PEOPLE AT??? This was a very well done video. It was thought out very clearly, direct without being unfriendly. I wholeheartedly agree with you. As a plus-sized woman, I'm hesitant to cosplay, especially male characters. Female characters I'm okay cosplaying, but the males (whom I REALLY want to cosplay) are more intimidating. It doesn't help that anytime I tell a friend "oh, I want to cosplay someone from this anime!", they always respond with a female character, usually a curvier one. Nothing wrong with that, gotta put the boobs to use somewhere, but still. Quite discouraging. But! I'm feeling motivated to cosplay males again (I mean I haven't ever done it before). F*ck anyone who says you're too big to cosplay someone, it's none of their damn business anyways! :D Also, I LOVE your intro. IT IS FABULOUS AND AMAZING AND I NEED TO KNOW HOW YOU MADE IT. Thank you. ;)

I'm just finding this, but this video speaks to me on the level of a newbie cosplayer and a plus size cosplayer. I've wanted to cosplay since I was in middle school. It's something that stuck with me all these years, even though I had numerous body image issues that really set in when I was fifteen. I've struggled a long time with my weight, with being comfortable in my body, and in the last two years or so, I've really gotten comfortable with my body & my weight. And I hope to continue to improve. :) And in also regards to height, I am 5'3. A majority of the people I wish to cosplay are taller, like 5'6 or higher. Height's also been a sore point for me, because everyone towers over me. But I've come to accept it at this point, and it doesn't bother me so much anymore.

LightningAnime That’s completely understandable, I get where you’re coming from. I cosplay Mishima from Persona 5 because I feel like I would look out of place as a Phantom Thief, but I can say that I have received nothing but positivity and love. Sometimes it’s hard to find a version of a character that suits your specific desire for cosplay outfits, but keep trying and know that sometimes you have to push yourself outside your comfort zone, but it’s okay to know your limits and decide not to do something. I wish you luck! -Tavaroo

Ahhh, i'm going through a struggle right now :s I wouldn't call myself plus-size but I am very obviously chubbier, especially in the thigh/hip area. Me and my partner want to do a couple cosplay for an upcoming con, but i'm worried since the character I would be cosplaying wears a crop-top and is really fit in canon. I know I probably wouldn't receive any judgement for it (at least not to my face), but I feel like i'm going to be incredibly self-conscious about the whole thing since I have the exact opposite body type of this character. On a happier note, congratulations on the weight loss dude!!! That takes MASSIVE dedication and will power. I hope it continues to go well for you! 👍

Sizgy I feel that! I've cosplayed characters that are supposed to be thin/muscular while I am most definitely not. It takes a lot of will power to be able to do it and I would say go for it, but it's also definitely acceptable to put your own mental health first and there is nothing wrong with holding off on a character if you aren't comfortable! And thank you so much! It's been a journey, that's for sure. 💜 -Tavaroo

I’ve been wanting to pick up cosplay for a while now (still working on it lol nothing coming from me soon haha) and a few days ago i was told by my doctor that i’ve gained about 33 pounds from last year to this. my mind went “i can’t do things anymore” and when i watching some panels, i just thought i could never do anything like that. never pull off something with shorts or a tank top or crop top. the thing is, though, my appearance really didn’t change. looking across a year, it looks like i’ve really only gained a pound or two, but hearing words like that just put me in a sucky mind set. while i’m definitely not plus size, i do struggle with weight and self image, and always seem to be the biggest of my friends who are all short and thin. this video was nice to hear, and was a reminder that i can wear a short skirt and not have to tug at it and be uncomfortable, or that i can wear a tank top without constantly squeezing and rubbing my arms. thank you so much for this video, because it really gave me a reason to keep trying to cosplay. and i’m sure it did the same for some people as well. :)

"You look absolutely fantastic! You're craftsmanship is amazing. I can't believe you handmade this all yourself. Thank you so much sweety for the support as my fan. Please don't stop cosplaying. You're beautiful." Vic Mignogna said this to me after I was bullied back in 2009 for being too short and too chubby to be cosplaying Tamaki Suoh and Fai from Tsubasa. (I've cosplayed other characters but these were the 2 Vic saw me in.) I worked so hard to make my cosplays, being confident in possessing the character's behaviors, and practiced my contour skills for my bishonen look. I've always been shy and sensitive about my body. I even did try my best to excercise more. I'm still a bit on the large size but I'm a lot more confident now.

NoIdeaInk I appreciate your comment back to me. 😊 I really give credit to Vic Mignogna for calling me beautiful and didn't judge me by my size. Instead he complicated how well I wore it and appreciated my labor put into my cosplay. Not to mention how well I portrayed the characters he played so well. As a serious fan of his, he really does care and love all his fans and it made it so worth it taking his comment to heart. I never would have continued cosplaying if it weren't for him.

I am personally not plus sized, but I can sort of relate to the costume problem. I always have a hard time finding a costume that fits because I’m on the smaller side lol! Thank you for creating this video. I'm not going to lie, normally the whole body positivity movement kind of annoys me cuz the fat activists can take it too far, but this was perfect. It highlighted all the difficulties of being plus size and trying to cosplay. I watch normal size cosplayer videos and tutorials and I'm always having to think of how to modify things to fit me or they suggest to get a piece of clothing or something that would be easy for them but difficult for me to find. This video was very encouraging

Nothing is wrong with plus size cosplay, much less plus size anything! The person behind the makeup and props cannot help it! I wish I was a little bit over weight myself, I'm only a little over a hundred pounds! This is a good video to cover this, I love how well you go over plus size cosplay.. maybe because you are one yourself, not in a bad way at all.

I know how does it feel to put 200 % on a cosplay just to be recognized. There was that one time when I had a very cool prop with me on a convention and I left it 2 minutes on a corner to buy some water... Some guys were talking about the cool prop the moment I returned and wanted to take some pictures with the cosplayer but after they saw it was MY prop one of them said "Nah, I don't want the picture anymore" and left... It is very hurtful when some people are ignoring your hard work just because you are chubby. Thank you for your kind words. It helps a lot to hear that they are people out there who are kind to plus size cosplayer. Sorry for my bad english.

To be honest, I stopped cosplaying around two years ago because of my weight. I was always very self-conscious of my body and hated how I looked in general. I'm a bit better about it now but still haven't resumed cosplaying because of those issues. It's not like people have been mean to me, in fact everyone's been really kind and friendly, it's just my anxiety and self-consciousness that makes it an issue. I'm afraid that people won't like me based on my size, which isn't okay. I'm trying to get out of this mindset, and maybe starting to cosplay again will help.

Nerdy Rainbow Girl Seeking out advice is one of the best things that you can do! I follow a couple other plus size cosplayers on Instagram and the main trend that I notice is that they craft a lot of their own pieces or edit ones that they do purchase. It’s a learned skill for sure, but if possible I recommend taking some sewing classes so that you can edit your own costume items or even create some of your own! Remember that we build costumes and cosplay for the love of characters and shows, there is no size minimum or limit on love! 💜 -Tavaroo

I need some advice. I'm cosplaying as sugilite for a con, but that involves wearing a bodysuit...a spandex bodysuit. I don't know about you, but I'm sure they don't make body suits that lol good on 5'6, 253 pound people. I'm not quite sure what precautions I should take in ordering the suit, in if when I'm wearing the suit, how to make it look right. Any advice?

  • @NoIdeaInk

    @NoIdeaInk

    5 жыл бұрын

Max Caufield I would definitely check reviews and ratings, and if you are worried you can always message sellers directly! If you have any familiarity with a sewing machine, or a relative who is, you can adapt body suits to be a little more fitting to you. I haven’t had a problem in looking for “blank” bodysuits (all one color) so long as it’s one meant for unisex sizing. Custom cosplay shops might be a good place to look as well so they can build something to your measurements. Do a lot of research for sure so that you know you’re working with someone who can make a good quality suit for multiple sizes! -Tavaroo

One of my first cosplays that I ordered I ended up only using the jacket of because the shorts and shirt both looked terrible on me. Know that it's okay to find alternative clothes that fit the character and fit you in a way that you like. I definitely feel this, a lot of my amazing friends are very well known and gorgeous cosplayers, and sometimes it can be hard to struggle with feeling upset. I turn my attention always to being supportive of them, and not letting the number of comments, likes, etc get to me. It's first and foremost about having a good time, having fun, and if you aren't able to do that, then it makes it difficult to feel the drive to do so. I know I sometimes take breaks from cosplaying to realign myself and make sure I'm still happy, and that is more than okay.
