I had this game on PS1 as a kid, you could open the disc tray and replace the disc with a CD and the music would play on the radio. Blew my little mind at the time

Looking back is much different than looking forward. I could give you a Nokia brick phone and you’d be appalled. As a kid looking forward, I wanted one. People like you will never know that feeling. There’s not much more in the way of up the gaming industry can go. Not in terms of graphics and gameplay. I had an Atari back in the 80s. When I got a Nintendo, I was blown away. When I got an SNES/Genesis, astounded again. N64/PS1, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. After the next upgrade, it was just refinement of what was already there. It was pretty gradual. May not seem like much to you, but GTA 1 was actually exciting coming from what I was used to. I’m not sure if you’ll get to the tons of controversy this game had heaped upon it, but just like Manhunt, this game was railed against by parents and politicians. I would say you know how it goes, but the level of disdain you see these days against video games like this is nothing like it used to be. Of course critics are going to slam it. Back then, magazines were still the biggest way to see reviews for games and news saying this game was dangerous for kids meant if video game magazines gave it a big thumbs up, that magazine was not allowed back in the house. You keep saying “back then” but I don’t really think you know what “back then” really means. You have no real concept of it. Reading 5,000 different biased views of it doesn’t do it justice. Edit: Compared to a lot of games these days, yeah, this game is rough AF. Back then, it was what we had and we got good at it. I used to be able to play through these games with the speed of a speedrunner. After being a part of modern gaming for so long? Yep, I can barely play it with any competency. It’s clunky and I do wonder why I ever liked it. All I can chalk it up to is I live in a different time and nostalgia doesn’t hold much sway over me in gaming. While I had an absolute blast with this game way back when, it was because that’s what I had and control schemes were pretty awkward. It was something you got used to. Now that I’m old, I don’t have the patience for it anymore.
