Let's talk about Crunchyroll.

Crunchyroll just removed their comment section, sparking yet another controversy in the anime community.
I only made this video because I care about Crunchyroll and hope they do better.
Crunchyroll (a company that started out as an anime-pirating website) now plays an important role in popularizing anime in the west. However, their business practices are less than acceptable. Translators are being paid unethical wages, despite the company seeing record profits every year. User info is being secretly sold to various companies. And the subscription fee remains the same, despite community features constantly being removed. The latest of which being the comment section.
I always found the Crunchyroll comments enjoyable to read after finishing an episode because I was curious to see how others reacted to it. And sometimes the comments would even point out hidden details or offer insights I hadn't considered. The spoiler/hate comments were few and far between until just recently, but this entire problem could be rectified if Crunchyroll (worth $1.75 billion) hires just a couple moderators to clean up their comment section. Instead, they opted to remove it entirely. I hope Crunchyroll reverses this decision, but I don't exactly have much faith in this company at this point.

They don't normally make these services that expensive, but if they were gouging people it would become a price issue. At its core it's usually a service issue though, since if the media is accessible and affordably in an appealing way to general consumers they will go this route especially if added convenience and incentives are there. People will work their way around crappy platforms or shitty pricing models (or killing people with ads).

While we're on the topic of Crunchyroll being stupid, I just need to rant about something that happened to me while I was watching anime. A few years ago, I was trying to watch Tropical Rouge Precure. I didn't have premium because I didn't want to pay for it. I was watching the peacfully and without issue until I got to one particular episode. The episode got to an ad break and during the ad break, it would play the same exact ads again and again until it eventually kicked me out of the episode. I tried to play the episode again, but since I had left off on an ad break, the glitch would just keep happening! It got to a point where I just couldn't watch the episode because the ads would kick me out. To make matters worse, the show was getting pay-walled AS EPISODE WERE RELEASED. The show was free to watch at first, but after a certain point, they all became payed for for some stupid reason. And since I was still stuck trying to watch the glitched episode and I didn't have premium, I ended up not being able to finish the series due to it becoming payed for. I feel like part of why I didn't like this series was because of this problem. Otherwise, I probably could have liked it a lot.

The thing that tipped me over the edge to unsub and never look back was the removal of reviews. The star system is trash that tells me nothing. I've found hidden gems thanks to a review writing a heartfelt love letter about the anime, and I've avoided countless hours of wasted time over animes that I knew I wouldn't like thanks to dedicated reviewers.

I generally agree with you, but for the sake of fairness, let me point some things out: - It was Funimation who bought out Crunchyroll, not the other way around. But in the end, Funimation's owner Sony decided that they'll keep Crunchyroll as a stremaing service and migrate Funimation's streaming there. So if you want to hate a company, hate Sony. The OG Crunchyroll crew - if there is any left - are actual anime fans. - The ability to take screenshots was not a feature you paid for. Actually, you're not even supposed to do it, as it is copyrighted material. Every single frame is. They were probably inspired by Disney+, who also lock screenshots from the beginning. By the way, if you really want to take screenshots, you still can, by switching a certain browser setting. You can blame a lot of things on Sony / Crunchyroll, but not this. PS: Crunchyroll is still the cheapest of all streaming services. Surprisingly cheap, to be honest.

I've had CR since wayyyyyyy back in like 09, and it had been one the predominant streamers I used Period because I mainly watched anime for a really long time. A few years ago I went through a severe depressive episode, and while I would want to watch anime I just didn't have the mental fortitude to even read subs at the time - I basically spent 3 years half heartedly watching YT in the background. Recently though I've started doing a little better and got a major itch to comfort my soul with some of my old favorites, so I booted up CR and was excited to relive so many feelings from anime I've continually rewatched for almost 20 years now. Imagine my shock, dismay and surprised pikachu face when I realized the overwhelming majority of the ones I wanted to watch were gone. Really old shows, ones that were from only a handful of years ago, so many just poof! I still can't believe it. Thankfully I own some, and can obviously Jack Sparrow the others, but it really shocked me and speaks volumes to me about the current state and attitude of CR in general. They, like so many other general streamers that hopped on the anime bandwagon, don't seem to actually understand or give a shit about Anime and the community, which is incredibly disheartening to see from an anime specific streamer that didn't used to feel like that. I've come to expect that from places like Amazon Prime (anyone remember Anime Strike, yeesh....) etc but Crunchyroll? Its just sad.

Honestly as a someone who knows Japanese linguistically and also half Japanese and lived there, the $80 wage for translators is honestly believable, and I don't blame them. If you know Japanese, you'd notice most translations on Japanese (just in general too not just crunchyroll) have wrong translations. Typically, you get more rushed translations (partly due to low wages) for people doing these jobs. Honestly $80 I'd argue is on the upper hand as unless its a very long episode/movie, *you're likely getting paid $30-50 an hour. Which is EXTREMELY HIGH wage.* This is pretty common with freelance type of work which I also do sometimes (though different industry, art/animation stuff). Freelancing is not a job you do for a living, its a side hustle / hobby. Lots of people are also now cheating with the use of AI. The average quality has diminished a lot due to this in most translation things. Did you know that 90% of the cookbooks now are written by AI? Its crazy.

Their decision to not renew the license for Re:Zero Season 1 anymore is so baffling to me. You're telling me that one of their biggest shows, for which they've spent huge amounts on advertising, no longer has its original airing available for streaming? I don't know why they didn't just drop the Director's Cut instead and license Memory Snow individually. It's funny, one of the biggest signs they had up at Anime Expo last week was for Re:Zero, and it had the words "Seasons 1 and 2 available on Crunchyroll!" Literal false advertising for their platform. Such a disappointment that they're what the anime community is stuck with.

Season 1 is still available on Crunchyroll but only as the directors cut. It is much easier to watch the directors cut with every episode being ~45min episodes and having fewer after credit scenes to worry about, and it also includes the EX Memory Snow OVA in that list. The original season 1 was also broken on Crunchyroll because one of the ~45min episodes from the directors cut was inserted into the original season 1 episode list and they listed them as Episode 1A and Episode 1B which confused a lot of people watching because then you are watching episode 1 and 2 twice! This probably turned a lot of people off of the series because the time loops you don't realize at first that you just watched ep1, ep1 and ep2 combined as directors cut and then watched ep2 again... The worst thing they could have done for new viewers of the series!

@@10100rsnAgain, this is why they should have licensed Season 1 and Memory Snow as separate entities. You want to talk about making things clearer for new viewers? Having the only option to view Season 1 be the misleadingly named "Director's Cut" and leaving one of the OVAs hidden as one of the episodes in said Director's Cut is just not how you get new viewers invested in a series. I won't even get into the fact that the original release of Season 1 was deliberately paced to have the credits played between episodes. As it currently stands, there's no legal way to watch Episode 18 ("From Zero") in its original format online, which is honestly just a huge shame. There is no reason for any of this to be an issue for a company with a billion-dollar valuation. It's not just that they're greedy, it's that they're incompetent in their greed.

Miku expo is a tour all across the NA and EUROPE Featuring the crypotonloids( hatsune miku, MEIKO, KAITO. Luka Rin and Len) This year it was suported by crunchyroll and they cut A LOT OF CURNRES. Like not being enough lightsticks and them costing 40$ per lightstick. VIPS not getting her goodies bag and the worst of them all... Miku appearing on LED screen not the usual glass screen ( hologram) And they did not even announce it. Like people bought 60$ tickets hopeing for a hologram but they got a LED tv screen. And they did not even try to hide the fact that it is LED screen.(Like some other concerts) The screen is just in the middle of the stage.

Speaking about dubs, back when Funimation entered the Latin American market in 2021 they began dubbing some old shows that they used to block in the region, one of those was Black Butler and the Neutral Spanish dub they gave was pretty good, they only dubbed the first 2 seasons and the OVA though. When Sony, Funimation's parent company, bought Crunchyroll they let the latter took control of everything and they ended Funimation's practice of dubbing old shows, which was barely just starting and when they announced that they would dub the latest Black Butler season many people were hopeful they'd dub the third season and the movie before premiering the dub for the fourth season, but they didn't do it, they skipped directly to the fourth season, at least the voice cast from Funimation was kept intact

Honestly, screw crunchyroll I have been a premium member for about a decade now, and the service is only getting worse. Here is a list of features they have taken away over the years while increasing the price (it used to be 7$ at some point): Episode countdown. Mark episode/series as watched/unwatched. Filter subs from dubs in the new episode page (the feature still exist but doesn't work). Screenshots. Report episode issues. Report comments/reviews. General series discussion thread (not just episode comments). Quality subs (some shows now have subs so bad it's not even funny) Episode comments. Written reviews. Edit, things I remembered they removed: Op/Ed translation. And that's just the things I can remember on top of my head. And let's not forget all the shows they dropped or censored to hell because they didn't match the tastes of investors. I'm honestly considering dropping crunchyroll and sailing the high seas at this point. They need to be reminded that their existence is hinged on them being more convenient than pirating shows. The only reason I haven't unsubbed yet is the few dimes from my money that actually reach the creators. What features do you remember they dropped and made you seriously consider unsubbing?

Crunchy just needs to flag their content BL and the vast majority of the customer base that ISN'T into BL doesn't have to see it. Everything else that followed has been setting up a horrible swing in the other direction.
