I had to comment to say that I have severe ADHD, and one "hack" that works for me is body doubling - having another person in the room; not necessarily conversing, but just someone there. I have found that your videos work as an excellent "body double", especially in the evenings after my kiddo is in bed, Mr. Hubs has gone to work, and it's time for me to tackle the kitchen 😂

I can relate so much! I have OCD too and grew up in a very messy home. My mom has a mental illness and just wasn't able to do better. I cleaned all the time but it would go back to being messy within days. I was frustrated a lot and just couldn't sympathize. These videos show me that she did her best.

Enjoyed watching this again in real time while you described the traits of someone with ADHD. I'm an old woman now and when I was growing up kids were labeled as either good or bad. They didn't have a medical diagnosis for possible or probable conditions. In fact, if you were depressed many times the community would say you were demon possessed! I can remember as a child when I would clean house for my mom, I would move furniture (like dining room table chairs) and align them in rows. I always thought that was the coolest thing to line them up in rows in an adjacent room while sweeping and mopping the floor in the dining room. I would proceed to pretend the rows were either bus seats or seats in a classroom and continue to play as I worked cleaning. Even now that I am grown and have grandchildren, I still move everything out of a room and clean it from a "move in" perspective. I love to move the furniture around and rearrange everything when I clean. Like you described, even though it is the same furniture, the same house, and same room, it all feels fresh and new. My husband has often told his family that if he is gone for more than a few hours the whole house will be rearranged when he gets home. I'm a petite woman who is impatient and determined so if I want something moved, I will slide and shimmy even a large piece of furniture a little at a time until I get it to the place in the room where I want it. That's just how I roll...So suck it!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

As an ADHD person myself (and a sped teacher who teaches this kind of task management all the time), the timer is a GREAT idea. Especially when pairing it with breaking up the task into chunks. I'd add 3 more tips. 1. Set timers for your breaks as well. 2. Try and race the timer and 3. Limit what areas you're allowed to clean. Time your breaks so you don't wnd up on a 3 hour break. Race the timer to add fun and excitement to the task, and limit the room so you don't take something to the bathroom to put it away and end up mopping the floor in there rather than finishing the room your working on.

The other thing with ADHD that happens is ‘I can’t see it, therefore it doesn’t exist.’ I have to keep my day planner open next to my keyboard or I completely forget to use it. I find that organizing things so I can see exactly what’s there helps keep the chaos at bay. It also keeps me from repurchasing things I already have 😅 Congrats on the plaque!

YES. I think people with ADHD (or even hoarding tendencies) use their eyes as a kind of mental memory index. Out of sight is quite literally out of mind. I think that's why they react so poorly to cleaning, especially hoarders. If something is thrown out, it's like you've erased part of their past.

As someone who has Autism and ADHD, Dana K White youtube videos has been making a huge difference for me and my house. Her decluttering and organizing systems are like specifically designs for ADHD. It is a slow process, but as I declutter and clean each room, it has been fairly easy for my husband and I to maintain. Still have about half the house to go and the yard to do in spring, but my stress levels have decreased quite a bit.

Been more of a silent watcher but: I have ADHD, I've struggled all my life keeping things tidy - it was never dirty in my room when I was a child but always messy because I would keep leaving things where I used them/just put them anywhere. It dragged all the way through to adulthood. I am now almost 29 and finally got control over it, it takes a lot of dedication. We ADHDers often get a nightly burst of energy (mine come around 10pm) and I use those, to clean and tidy up. I'm nowhere near as messy as I used to be as a child but it took me a long time to figure that part out. Your videos are motivating me to get up and do something whenever I am watching, after I wrote this I will probably go do the laundry and dust and put the last things away after moving lol. That being said, for the fellow ADHDers: Don't beat yourself up if you can't keep it tidy, if you truly need it to change, do it step by step, room by room or even just area by area. Clean homes also help the ADHD mind. Thanks for your videos :)

Thank you so much for explaining ADHD. I would never have guessed that's what I have, but I am exactly like your wife. I always leave out stuff that I use close at hand and then it just piles up and before long I have piles of crap everywhere. I know in my head that I need to clean it up and put it away, but when I look at the piles I just get so overwhelmed that I shut down and say I'll do it later. I've been told all my life that I'm just lazy and so I have a very low opinion of myself and have depression. Your videos have really inspired me to do more cleaning. LOL my husband and I are this same combo of autism and ADHD. I need a list to get anything done. Definitely the hardest thing for me has been learning to clean one space at a time and not wander off. Like I'd start cleaning the kitchen, go to put something away in the office, find something that needed to be cleaned in the office, go to get a trash bag, realize I needed to organize the cleaning supplies... NO! That's how you end up with a 20% clean kitchen and a 13% clean office and a 4% clean house. Dealing with the other person's cleaning style is tough too. My husband used to get really upset with my messiness, and his cleaning obsession made me so anxious. I remember having a SUPER direct conversation with him where I was like "Look, I am who I am, I'm comfortable with it. You need to be aware that the effort I'm putting in is because it's out of love FOR YOU, so quit being a jerk if it's not the way you want it." I don't think it had ever occurred to him that there was more than one level of organization that a person could be happy with. We've been married for fifteen years now, and I think we've reached a good midway point between his ideal and mine.

I have a lot of thank yous for you, but I will stick with these big 2 for today. First, I am an over cleaner to soothe my anxieties. But, now I am 70 years old and additionally have long haul Covid and do not have the stamina I used to have. I was getting so frustrated that I could no longer clean for hours at a time. I learned from you to clean for 50 minutes and break for 10. That has been so helpful. Also I break the cleaning down into smaller tasks. That way if my fatigue overwhelms me I have at least accomplished a portion of my overall job. It has nothing to do with ADHD, it has to do with health and age. Thank you for being the voice of reason for me. And also, I just enjoy your videos so darn much! I wish I was younger and could spin kick the dirt off!

Ok first that vent behind the tv has to be cleaned it demolished my ADHD 😂 Second My nephew has autism (that’s why we as a family started following your channel) he loves to clean! Laundry is his main thing. But it’s so amazing to me how differently it is with each person. His apartment (my sister converted her entire downstairs for him) is minimalist to a fault. You could literally eat off his floors He could never function in a space with so much stuff. He can’t have carpet (it drives him crazy) the uneven curtains etc he would insist those be changed. But, he is also non verbal. (Sign language is his way of communicating with very few actual spoken words) being ADHD your channel / videos is what I watch to relax. I want to say thank you for sharing your life with us and showing people that autism doesn’t mean something bad…. You are opening a lot of people’s eyes about autism and the fact that it doesn’t always mean someone can’t live a normal life.

My boyfriend has ADD. I call the clutter piles his 'first flat space filing system'. It drives me bonkers. He's great at doing a thing when I can focus him on a task. I've tried the 5 minute thing but he's better at doing a single corner or a single task. I find that he literally doesn't remember a pile unless he's actually looking at it. Pile of water bottles by his bed. Pile of mail that needs to be shredded. I've had a giant planter box sitting in the living room for 3 weeks waiting for it to get warm enough to plant stuff. It mocks me daily as spring just gets pushed back yet another week. I mentioned it the other day and he had no clue what I was talking about. Thanks for you videos, they've helped me figure out a better way to tackle cleaning. Plus I play one as I go along for motivation...I am not up for spin kicks yet though

My husband is a hoarder but I'm more of a minimalist. Opposite attract right! Not to say that it is an easy path in life but after 45 years and many heated arguments we have reached an understanding. I love clean and one of the easy ways for me to accomplish clean is to change things up. In the change process I get to organize him a little better. He sells on Amazon and at comic cons. So often I find boxes with one little toy in it. I consolidate and label, which he likes but won't admit to me. But I can take a huge pile and condense it into 2 or 3 boxes. I can organize a whole shelf unit leaving 2 or 3 shelves empty creating new space for him to hoard on to. I recently "remodeled" the guest bedroom. Which opened up to a clean open room for our grandsons to visit. We have 9 grandsons who love their Papa. When he made one of his grumpy comments, I replied that it was awesome that he was able to make room for his grandsons in his home and life. He stopped.

Having a son with ADHD and Autism didn't seem a problem with cleanliness when he was younger as he kept his room clean and tidy but for some reason as an adult, still living with us, when it came time for house inspections, seeing inside his room literally made me want to cry.

My husband has ADD, and has both hoarding tendencies and the tendency to take advantage of my cleaning abilities. If he uses the last of something, he will put the empty container/packaging at my place at the kitchen table or on my end table in the living room so that I can throw it away, rather than him throwing it away. If I clean and organize a messy area in the house and get rid of the "junk" there, he will fill it back up with stuff. So I completely understand living with someone with ADD/ADHD.

If he saw a clear surface something inside would say "yay, a nice clear spot to drop junk onto". With my brother .. I cleared & cleaned one of the kitchen counters and was feeling really good about it .. he came in and with the saddest expression commented "the counter .. it looks so .. empty" I said "yeah ain't it great!" but he just sadly shook his head. The counter is no longer clear or clean .. and it drives me insane. 😖

My house is neat and tidy, no clutter, if I take something out, I put it back immediately after I use it. If I spill something I clean it up right away. If I don't wear, touch, or use something once in 365 days it outta here. I never walk from one end of the house to the other without a damp cloth in my hand because I dust continuously. Yet I get lots of flack about me being obsessive about neatness, so no matter if you're messy or neat someone will find fault with you. Ya just can't win.

I have ADHD as well. Since clutter overwhelms me, I have to put things away immediately after I'm done with them, or they will sit out forever causing "paralysis" for me. I do have stacks of books, and magazines, by where I normally sit, because I read several things at a time, and it takes me awhile to finish one. I have found that making check lists helps to keep me on track, as well as verbally walking myself through tasks.

I'm still as smart as I was , I just get distracted easily & lose track of time . Watching your channel has motivated me & has helped make cleaning fun again ! If you can clean houses 10 times messier than mine - that gives me hope that I can get mine done, eventually. What has helped me most is your advise NOT to think about the entire space, but to just focus on cleaning ONE thing, like the table, then use it to set up my cleaning supplies . If you need a Vacation (which you deserve !) or to "Celebrate your Award" I'm in the Wine Country of California ! So I keep them in sight. Which will of course be impossible after I cluttered everything... I just forget to put them back when I don't need them any longer. Hey, attention span! 🐿 My wardrobes and dressers are neatly organized when you open them - but things will again and again end up on top of them. As soon as I break the daily or weekly routine of putting things back just once, I start to loose the fight. It is a constant struggle :-)

Example: 1) wash 10 dishes, 2) clean off the stove, 3) clean off 1/2 the counter. I do it in exacts so i have a start and a stop point, i have a list so if I get distracted i can come back to it, and crossing things off makes your brain happy. I hope this might help

I love seeing the deep cleaning in the crazy hoarder houses but I also like seeing you clean your house. You are so real about it. You own a cleaning company and your house is not magazine perfect (guess that shows my age…lol) at all times. It’s a nice lived in house. I’ve always wondered what other people’s houses looked like when they deep cleaned. Mine embarrasses me when no one is around to see it. And due to life and health circumstances, our house looks kinda like a hoarder house. We are not hoarders, we just have a small house with bad storage. We do have things that need to go but we are ok with letting that stuff go. We have trash, not because we like it but because we live in the boonies and it’s actually not easy or cheap to get rid of trash. Health circumstances equate to medical bills which means you do the cheapest thing available and in our area that is a mixture of recycling (happy to recycle) & buying county trash bags and taking it to the local dumpster which is open like half a day twice a week… We are trying to recycle everything we can but our house is small so there is not a good place to put the recycling. We often end up with a pile in a corner of the kitchen of recycling stuff overflowing the storage box we currently have. I just bought some bins from IKEA and that is helping a lot but even I am guilty of being exhausted and leaving coke cans on the counter or rinsed out jars by the sink. I have the weirdness of both ADHD & OCD the actual for real diagnosed mental disorder of obsessive compulsive disorder to go with my anxiety and depression. So in my head I want that magazine picture perfect house. But I’m constantly exhausted by anxiety meds and simply an fatigue problem that I think is just part of the above issues because I was tired a lot even as a kid. When an 8 year old takes a nap without being told to while watching This Old House…something is off… I watch your videos and I want to tackle every single project right now! Then I start, get overwhelmed and tired and retreat to the sanctuary of my bed/cave like an ostrich, head in the sand. You have taught me that 1. I’m not alone in these struggles. 2.) when you tell how long it takes you to do things, I realize that the expectations I have set for myself in what I call Project Home Rescue (we also had a huge leak last year that is not remodeled yet….too long of a story but there are 3 vanities in my hallway 😢) and how long I think it should take for me to do each little project within the larger project are unrealistic especially considering my fatigue issues. That helps me just knowing that I need to be more realistic about my goals and expectations of myself. It helps me not overwhelm quite as easily. But with ADHD, I can plan a day of work in an order that is sensible and work for hours but at the end of the day the place looks worse than when I started. SO frustrating! Anywho, thank you for being compassionate, real and funny! Congratulations on 100K+ subscribers!! That’s a huge milestone and accomplishment!!

I appreciate your perspective of “humanness” of ADHD. Anyway, thank you again for an informative video this week regarding ADHD. I think you see yourself as impatient when it comes to getting things done, yet you “know” people. That’s why you have a heart of gold and can “patiently” help people. Congratulations on the plaque! Thanks for the videos. The content you make shows how to keep going on a deep clean. I retired early last year and the goal this winter was a total house deep clean. I was thinking I would need to hire another person to help move and clean the rooms but you doing super dirty houses gave me the idea to give it a shot. The house is clean and back to the projects in the house. It was not that bad if you take breaks and keep focus at the task in front of you. This spring/summer is the garage cleaning. Keep up the great work!

I really like seeing you do your home. I’m like your wife, just changing a room around, a good cleaning, etc makes it feel all new. It makes a huge difference to see that you’re a “normal” family just like most of us with kids, pets and everyday clutter. I’d love to see videos of you focusing on a room in your house too. I have 5 cats and 2 dogs and had to chuckle about the pet hair. It’s a real struggle to keep up with that each day but if you don’t you’re likely to find a new pet of hair roll out somewhere. You’re awesome as is Jason!

Silly Jason and his misplaced spin kicks! No wonder he's been off his groove for the last month or so, lol. Love the freshly rearranged room! I'll be doing this in my own home soon enough, and I look forward to the new results. Neurodivergence is a strange thing. My hubby is on the autism spectrum and while he's the most brilliant, intelligent, clever person I've ever met, he's a complete clutter magnet. With a few exceptions (like his tools), he'll leave stuff out everywhere and not think twice about it. It drives me crazy! I will show him some of your cleaning videos. From one neurodivergent to another, maybe something will click about bringing order out of chaos. Congratulations on the plaque! It looks good on your wall.

Yes you made it!!! Congratulations! Your videos have kicked me in the butt to start deep cleaning my almost hoarder house. With 3 cats and a Pomeranian I totally get the 10 gallons of pet hair! 🤣 I love your humor, your explanations of what/why/how you do something while cleaning and how sweet and caring you are to help those who need the help cleaning. Again congrats and hope you make gold my the end of this year! 🧹🧼🧽🧴

I love the feeling of a deep clean/rearranging because it feels like a fresh start. Double bonus points if donating excess clutter to the goodwill. Whatever it is, you're not going to miss it and it's replaceable anyway.

This video reminded me of my mom's car. My dad was a mechanic and her Buick had push button controls but she'd have to take the dash apart and do something to make the car start. Dad was so busy fixing every else's vehicles he never had time for mom's.
