LET'S TALK ABOUT ACADEMIC PRESSURE ON STUDENTS || Toxic Education Culture, Bay Area, CA

In this video I will cover everything I wish I knew as a Bay Area kid and cover some concrete steps to broaden your horizons if you live in a tech bubble. I grew up somewhere where academic pressure and shaming was huge in schools, in my community, amongst parents and STEM was seen as the only path to success. The Bay Area is still that way and it causes countless students hardship, mental health issues, and dissatisfaction with life, not to mention many students end up in fields that they do not enjoy. In this video, I’ll go over what academic pressure looks like, debunk some common myths, give a message to parents, give you concrete steps to changing your life and broadening your horizons and finish off with some questions so that you can figure out what is a meaningful life to you.

A Ph.D. in English literature and (eventually) a career teaching college students! 2 quarters left of my B.A. and applying to grad schools this fall so that puts me one step closer.

Good video! I do not think UCs actually work for California students. They take students from outside California more! Also, I do not think the problem is parents alone. It is the system. This obscene amount of pressure continues throughout high school and University, and esp in stem fields, I feel there is a lot of things that need to change with the system. Students don't have any rights in Universities esp in the graduate and PhD system. Teachers routinely discriminate against students. However, this is a really good video that addresses a lot of issues, if not all of them. At the end of the day, we should feel empowered to do something that we are good at and something we enjoy, not just something society expects us to do.

Thanks for your comment! I agree the system has an immense amount of issues so I didn't try to squeeze it in this video. Glad someone agrees about UCs favoring out of state students - I will have a video on educational equity coming up soon that addresses this. These are great points!
