Let's Taco Bout Cortnay Penrose (Asoiaf Game of Thrones)

Ойын-сауық

Finishing off Storm's End week, we don't have a Baratheon, we have Cortnay Penrose! He is named by Renly Baratheon as castellan of Storm's End, and holds the castle during the war of the Five Kings. He's a fan favorite and is seen in Catelyn's chapters in Clash of kings, and is killed by a shadow baby.
This the newest vid in my Asoiaf Lore series. I'm making smaller deep dives into A Song of Ice and Fire Lore, including Game of Thrones, Dunk and Egg, Fire and Blood, and House of the Dragon Characters. The Goal of this series is to give a spotlight to smaller lesser-known characters from all over the asoiaf lore. Characters That do not have POV chapters and do not make it into the shows.

    Weathered face means he is outside a lot. A bit leatheryish, aged tan. Wrinkles, but not grossly so. How did i miss this video? Penrose is SUPER loyal to Targaryens. Penrose being there is cool as hell. Stannis screwed up here, too. Penrose, like Baratheon, is closely related to Targaryen's. I hope Stannis remembers Penrose with regret because they were family. Penrose's, Baratheons, Targaryens, a few rare others-they are related and deeply connected through their family histories. He didn't hate Stannis. He hated what was going to happen if Stannis took Edric. Edric was his ENTIRE concern there-but it almost reads like he was trying to prevent Stannis from screwing himself over, too. Cortnay didn't give 1 f00k about that castle and shit. Sidenote-your comment about Joff making fun of Stannis and Renley fighting each before coming for Joff/KL? Joff says and does a couple of things that show he would have been pretty brilliant at warfare, in general. And Meadows...I have to wonder if THAT is at least part of what Stannis means when he says he will take Winterfell by guile, etc. Stannis has been around-has has a lot of moves in his playbook by Theon's last chapter.

    Joff might have been a good Commander if he wasn't a coward. And I'm pretty sure the "take it by guile" line is Jon Con talking about Storm's End. But yeah probably right about Cortnay's motivations.

    @@somethingtotacobout5565 Joff never got the chance, thank gawd. Had Joff been a decent person tho-or even just less sadistic-he likely would have been good at warfare likely. The guile line is awesome, isn't it? It could really be a bit of everything. Lighthouse, Underground, the ice on the water...those holes they dug already? Stannis has a LOT of plays from everywhere and everywhen. I am SO excited for it-I am addicted as hell to these books. My brain will NOT let go. It has been years, and it is STILL fun to think about lol.

    Is Cortnay a second or younger son of Lord Penrose? Perhaps he was willing to bend the knee to anyone else to secure that he could be awarded Storm’s End. Or maybe he might have been a faithful man of the seven and did not like worship of the red god.

    That's not stated. We don't know if he has any siblings or if he's the heir of the Parchments.

    Hey Taco to answer that question you ask yourself that was a good question about Courtnay Penrose..... The reason that he would be willing to surrender that castle and bend the knee to anybody except stannis is probably because he's so loyal to friendly that he's like f*** stannis so I'll go with anybody else before him

    One interesting thing about Lord Penrose is that in the German language books he's called Fünfrosen ("five roses")! i guess because pen- means "five" in ancient greek.

    If you want another Penrose theory, I’ve seen this one guy who is convinced that Cortnay was actually killed by Meadows and the men under him who did not wish to die. The whole Shadow baby thing was just Melisandre taking advantage of seeing his fate and trying to convince Davos she is that powerful. I personally don’t believe it, but it’s good to have variety.

    Ok so I want to start by saying I adore watching your videos, I feel you aren’t as big as a Courtney fan because you didn’t bring up his S tier quotes againast the young knights and Stannis. Courtney is a Baratheon man through and through, with that he respects Bobby Bs reign with Renly as the storm lord. He raised Renly and currently raising Edric , he got wind of what happened to renly and is absolutely refusing to change the Baratheon agenda and does care about edric

    Yeah. Guilty. I feel like I could have focused on those more. Also I kept saying Roland Storm was castellan of Storms end, but that was Dragonstone. So, kinda feeling I wasn't on my full game.

    Are Cortnay Penrose and his father Ronnel's and Archlady Elaena's descendants?

  • @somethingtotacobout5565

    @somethingtotacobout5565

    I can't say so definitively. Elaena married a Lord Penrose and had one son and 3 daughters. So it's very possible that they are the direct descendants. But without a complete family tree I can only say, most likely.

    @@somethingtotacobout5565See,that is what I was wondering. Are they their descendants or did Ronnel's and Archlady Elaena's children not have surviving descendants that Ronnel's relative who is next line became grand peer and Cortnay and his father is descended from him/her and therefore not biologically related to Archlady Elaena and only to Ronnel and his children paternally? If story never tell how Ronnel and his children are related to Cortnay and his father, can we not just ask George Raymond Martin directly about this?

    Yes. According to the family tree on Wiki of ice and fire. Phillip and his 3 sons are Viserys' direct descendants from one of his elder sons.
