You are going to love it! It's a rock solid system. You might want to practice on some cheap knives first just to find your rhythm but once you get it it's a breeze to get your knives razor sharp. OH.... Don't forget to tape the blade as well and take your time. Slower strokes are more effective than faster strokes..

Hi, I'm on a budget and have ordered a lansky sharpening system. Dead excited waiting for it to arrive, saw this post and went straight yo Amazon to look for magnifier. Would you mind saying what magnifier you used here. I started looking at apex4. If I get on well with the Lansky I might upgrade next year, or It might be enough for my light use. Thanks I've been watching a lot of sharpening posts and learning different things from each.

If you use a digital angle gauge to measure the angle using the sharpener platform as your zero-degree reference, you have to take into account the contribution to the apparent angle from the secondary bevel angle because the blade is not resting totally flat relative to the platform. It's tilted by an angle equal to the secondary bevel angle. Therefore, you have to ADD back the secondary bevel angle to get the true primary bevel angle setting. If you don't make this correction, your primary bevel angle (i.e. at the edge) will be a lot more acute than you'd want. Some people reverse the terminology between the primary bevel and the secondary bevel. To me, the primary bevel angle refers to the cutting edge angle ( or properly speaking, one-half of it). The primary bevel angle is 1/2 the cutting edge angle. The secondary bevel is the angle between the large flat face of the knife and the center line. For example, if the secondary bevel angle (i.e. the big flat knife face) is 3 degrees per side, then you have to set the sharpening rod angle 3 degrees higher than the digital angle gauge reads relative to the platform reference. So, let's say you want to have the primary bevel angle at a true 18 degrees per side, you have to set the sharpening stone 3 degrees higher at 21 degrees ( i.e. 18+3) per side to get the true 18 degrees primary angle per side. If you don't make this correction, for a secondary bevel angle of 3 degrees, you'll end up with a true primary angle of 15 degrees per side. An error of 2 to 3 degrees per side is too much to ignore. I also wouldn't rely on the color markings on the vertical support post at the back of the sharpener. I would rely on the digital angle gauge method using the sharpener platform as the zero-degree reference. You can find the secondary bevel angle quite easily and precisely with the help of a digital angle gauge and a flat surface. Most knives have a secondary bevel angle at 2 to 3 degrees per side.

I got the older edge pro apex version.. but it feel awkward using it because im a right handed, it so hard to get a consistent when im doing the other side of the blade that need to use my lefthanded because i need to hold the knife with my right.. and it also scratch my blade while sliding it while sharpening..so after not so long using it i sold it back to a friend.. change to using a hapstone that use a blade clamp system so i dont need to hold the blade with my hands all the time.. it really make life easier..

As far as stones go. I would most likely go with the choseras. Start with a course grit to define the edge, work my way up through the progression using a 300, 600, then most likely finishing on a 1K. You could take it even higher but the edge might get a little crispy on you..
