Let's Sew the Elaine Pouch by Rosie & David Patterns - DIY

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is a step-by-step tutorial demonstrating how to construct the Elaine Pouch by Rosie & David Patterns. This dome shaped pouch offers a wide zipper opening and measures approximately 9.5" Wide by 7.0" High by 3.75" Deep. The bottom of the pouch is flat enabling it to stand up on its own and its generous size makes it useful for many purposes. The bottom interior of the pouch is finished with bias binding which adds structure to the bottom of the pouch. It is constructed with 100% Cotton Quilting Fabric for the Exterior and Interior and uses Pellon SF101 and Pellon FF77 Flex Foam for interfacings. This pouch is domestic sewing machine friendly. I love that you do the binding the same way my grandmother taught me. It’s the best way and gives such a clean finish. If people would do the binding the way we both do they wouldn’t be so fearful to do it. I believe the binding has to be just as beautiful as the rest of the bag. Watching your videos is just like sitting next to my grandma when she was with us. I’m glad there’s someone like you out there teaching others your technique. Thank you for the great videos and sharing your knowledge!

Rosie, I bought the pattern a few weeks ago and hand sewing my binding on tonight. Thanks for a beautiful pattern. One mistake I made is a used a different width zipper that I had on hand. Well then my biased binding was a little too long. The bottom of the bag was a little to big also, but I was able to adjust both for sizing. Next time I will get the suggested zipper width.

Tip on ruler alignment: let the 1/4" line go through the bottom right corner of the fabric for an engineered miter. I also recommend the Creative Grids Folded Corner Clipper that makes quick work of this. It is small and agile with 1/4" marking to 5"

BEGINNERS ALERT: This Elaine Bag is the cutest pouch! But beginners like me: Make sure you hone your skill in exact measuring and cutting first before attempting this pattern. And make sure you know how to hand stitch. In the very last step in the video you suddenly left on your own to finish the bottom panel either with a hand stitch or machine stitch, neither of which are demonstrated. However, this video tutorial is fantastic and goes a LONG way in helping us beginners, but there are just some skills we have to perfect first, lol! If measurements are off even a hair -- well, you don't want it to be off at all. I made a sample first. I want to make it again and again for Christmas gifts to my nieces. It's been a long time since I've sat at my sewing machine. Oh. That's something else to beware of. If your machine is uber basic, it will be a challenge to achieve the stitching in the video. That said, order the pattern and try this pattern anyway and let the desire for a perfect Elaine Bag inspire you! Thanks for a lovely video!

Hi, I'm not the video creator but it will depend on your machine. A $100 one from Walmart is going to struggle but any entry level machine from $200 upwards should be fine. Vintage metal made machines even better - they aren't industrial strength but they handle heavy loads almost as well.

  • @RosiesArtStudio

For the zipper, I used an #4.5 YKK zipper that was 18 inches long and I cut it to the length that it needed to be. The strips for the binding are cut on the bias. All the information is in the PDF pattern. Thanks for watching.

As you get more familiar with sewing you will probably find yourself returning to this pattern. You aren't sewing the zipper blindly to the fabric, you are using a set seam allowance the whole way through the pattern, so that is guiding your sew line along the zipper tape. Does that make sense? As long as everything is lined up correctly and you are using the right seam allowance for it then the zipper placement will be correct.
