    I'm still coming down from Ken's huge turn 3; ramming Laurie wildly off-course, shooting Jon off the checkpoint twice before charging in to take it himself, and then intentionally throwing himself off the edge of the board all in one turn. Unbelievable scenes.

    I played a large version of this at Dragon Con once. By large, the 'robots' were about a foot tall, and the board covered a small room with an announcer reading off (with cheek) what everyone did. I nearly died laughing when someone ran off into a pit, and the announcer said something like "After that success, so and so capped it off by flinging themselves into oblivion."

    Great fun. Just a rules clarification, an "again" card in the first slot behaves exactly like a "Spam." A random card off of the top of the draw pile is revealed, and the robot moves accordingly.

    I love RoboRally, but I mostly loved the chaos. In older versions you all turn around your register cards simultaneously and the one with the highest value on the card would move first. So if someone was behind you, they could really screw your turn over. It also just locked your actions if you got too much damage. These spam and haywire cards weren't a thing. You could indeed also take a full turn of doing nothing to remove all damage you had gotten. I have a relative new version with only two boards with two sides. But for the really old versions there are expansion boxes with way crazier boards. I once played a 12 hours long game with 4 old school boards where we had to jump a lot over the abyss, because that particular board had more pit spaces than move spaces. And they all had bumpers to jump. I think the game was ended by player elimination. If you died 3 times, your robot was permanently broken and you were out of the game. I think that's the best part in this newer version though. You cannot actually die. I am a big fan of that and I might actually houserule that into my version.

  • @HibikoDaishi

    @HibikoDaishi

    As another player of old school roborally, definitely the individual player decks do look to speed up the game, however you really lose out on the what numbers are on the cards played to determine the order. On top of that this new damage system really demonstrated it's issue where as long of the spams were out of the deck and none of them had put back in so people were only getting haywires towards the end there. Definitely miss the slow degradation of less cards to play, and then the eventual cards locked into the slots. As far as the respawns though, yeah it's really easy to house rule and drop the number of lives so no one is ever fully out of the game.

    Each player draws 3 Upgrades at no cost at the start of the game. You only pay 1 to draw 1 after that if you want more options. So you have a good chance of being able to buy one before the game even starts.

    Robo Rally was the first non-traditional (ie not chess or backgammon etc) board game I played. It's really fun and hectic! If you're interested in the game, try to get the older version; it has a timer and more hectic maps and weapons for the robots which means silly things are more likely to happen. The new version is also good though, we usually play with the addition of a timer and have our own cards in the deck to make it more crazy. :)

    I love RoboRally, the chaos is always great. That said, 3 rules things that I noticed while watching. First, as others have said, you start with 3 upgrade cards. Second, you discard all non-damage cards from your hand after programing is finished so you can't hold on to cards without something like Jon's memory card upgrade. Third, Again in the first register is supposed to act like spam, getting a random program card.

    1:16:50 - Laurie's path this round is a great demonstration of why "Turning it off and on again" fixes so many problems. His programmed action would have gotten his goal, but one little nudge out of sync and it caused an extremely unpredictable result. If he could 'reboot' his sequence any point after the 'glitch' Ken caused, he'd get to his goal.
