Let's Play Millennia Rome Gameplay Episode 1 The Stone Age | Paradox's New 4X Civilization Like Game

Ойындар

Join me as I play as Rome in Millennia, a new turn-based 4X strategy game developed by C Prompt Games & published by Paradox Interactive.
At first look, Millennia shares a lot of similarities with the Civilization series and thus would qualify for the title of a "Civ-like." However, this game is far more complex than the Civilization series, particularly its economic and military systems, and features fun and novel mechanics not seen in the genre, such as its national spirits that allow the player to radically shape their civilization in a variety of different ways or Millennia's signature feature, the ages. While you can move from one historical age to another similar to other games, there are also variant, crisis, and victory ages that can dramatically change the history of your world, offering new buildings, units, and unique mechanics.
I discuss my reasoning and strategy as I play, thus this playthrough could serve as a tutorial or guide.

    thanks for the gameplay preview! Wild Hunters look like fun. If you're lucky, you can get a lot of food, culture (if you get the innovation event) and improvement points. Also, the ability of the bow hunter (and it's relative cheap price) allows you to get a lot of said ressources from outside your city border without having to work the tiles.

    A suggestion for those new to the game, you are going to want to plan for your cities to take up at least 35 usable land tiles. Clearly getting the most out of population by improving tiles, and when you run out of those, a cities growth potential also runs out. There is a diminishing return of course, if you take too long finding the "perfect" setup others may move in and ruin it. And the map does not, of course, always play nice with you.The AOI likes to stack cities right on top of one another, I like taking prospectors and making forward outposts to then turn into towns just to "terraform" my cities foot-prints.

  • @PraetorianHiJynx

    @PraetorianHiJynx

    A viewer asked me in a later episode how many tiles I try to have for each region, and I believe I told him about 35 as well. Though I do recommend having a bit more for your capital, as it usually has a significantly larger population than other cities.

    Very excited for this series! I read all the dev diaries 3 times and watch all those dev videos and shorts because I'm so excited for game. Civ needs a good competitor cuz Humankind wasn't it. Can you show as many variant ages as you can? The ages is most unique mechanic I think, and the national spirits.

    I liked Humankind at launch, but I've been disappointed with the post-launch development. They basically haven't done much with the game, which is unfortunate because I think with some large, quality expansions it could have been better than Civilization. In this campaign, I'll take us through as many variant ages as possible, as I find them to be better than the historical ages. However, keep in mind that you can't do two variant ages in row.

    I'm having a blast with the game so far! It definitely has that "just one more turn" element to it. However, there are some issues as well. The game has terrible performance in the late game, particularly on huge maps. Also there are some balance issues that need to be adjusted (some of which we show in this series). The AI could also use some improvement. But despite these issues, I'm enjoying the game quite a bit :)

    I think that completely removing the bonuses from the Civs is possibly fine. I just don't like that you still pick a Civ at all then. Unless you start with certain small bonuses, then just leave them without names and then players pick names when they hit a certain age ala Spore inspired stuff or something. It feels hollow to be Rome.... yet have nothing Roman whatsoever.

    I don't think a 4X game has to copy everything Civilization does to be a good game. In fact, I think the way this game does it, with you shaping your own country as you play using the very unique and significant bonuses of the national spirits, to be superior to the unique civilization bonuses of other games in the genre. The four national spirits you select in a campaign grant far more flavor and impactful gameplay than anything Civilization had IMO.

    You're probably missing out. Civilization offers content in the form of Civilizations that play differently and uniquely, based in historical themes. For example, the British usually have naval bonuses and science in the middle-game while the Romans have infantry and expansion bonuses in the early game. Civ V and Civ VI allow you much more freedom in choosing certain other attributes such as religion and scientific paths while remaining partially true to thier historic roots. That lends itself to more content, as the developers need to balance the different civs, special units, and playstyles for many different civs. You can also learn alot about anthropology, history, and culture from playing because you learn about certain "themes" from the world's cultures. But in Millennia, it seems like it takes less thought and effort to just bake up a bunch of traits and let you pick a civ to pair them with. Overall less effort to for the devs to pushout.

  • @PraetorianHiJynx

    @PraetorianHiJynx

    Well if you want to optimize, then yes certain civilizations are best for certain victory conditions, but there's no reason you can't pick who you want and go for whatever victory you want. And some civs have bonuses that could work for many victory conditions. With that being said, I do prefer Millennia's approach of allowing me to customize my civilization as I play.

    This game has armies, so as long as an army has a slot remaining a unit can join it. Initially, army size is only 3 units, but this increases quite a bit with technology. Army composition is actually quite important, as each unit type has a different role in combat. I suggest checking out my beginner guide if you're interested in specifics :)

    I got a laugh that you said picking the initial scout option on setup isn’t worth it, then once in the game you talk about how essential making a scout right away is.

  • @PraetorianHiJynx

    @PraetorianHiJynx

    2 ай бұрын

    That's not what I said though. I said it doesn't matter what you pick so get what you want, as all of the starting bonuses are minor and quite insignificant overall. I also mentioned that a starting bonus that lasts the entire campaign is a better value. Let's say a scout is worth 12 production, would you rather get 12 production immediately, or get a +1 production every turn in every city across around 300 turns? Seems clear to me the regional production is the better value. But by the end of the game your cities will have around 150-200 production, so +1 production becomes almost irrelevant.

  • @alatamore

    @alatamore

    2 ай бұрын

    Agreed. However I think in any 4X style game that you have a snowball effect. So if you get the scout out searching 3-5 turns sooner, you are more likely to find the goodie huts and best expansion paths before other civs. As you showed, if you take that initial research boost you can be the one to hit the Bronze Age first, which boosts you more. So while in absolute numbers the long term boosts seem better, I think the initial bonuses are better because they let you snowball.

  • @PraetorianHiJynx

    @PraetorianHiJynx

    2 ай бұрын

    Sure, but exploration also involves a lot of luck. Sometimes there simply aren't many goodie huts around you, or you send your scout the wrong direction and they instead hit a mountain range or a rival civ that has already got all the good stuff in that area.

  • @alatamore

    @alatamore

    @@PraetorianHiJynx Yes very true. I think that makes these challenging to pick. Personally I’m a scout first type player, and jump on that works for me, but you are completely right that sometimes that’s wasted with little to no benefit. At any rate I like how this game approaches these. I know many people complain about the lack of Civ flavor, but I like this dynamic situation where the Civs develop over time, and aren’t locked into bonuses. It improves replay and makes how you handle opponents differently.

    @@PraetorianHiJynxExtending that logic though, that starter scout doesn't give you n turns of production. But rather n turns headstart exploring on the competition. Meaning better chances to find early goody huts or landmarks, meaning boosts and a shot at the special age requiring landmarks. The edge is still minimal ofc. As RNG may still put none of those in your path despite everything.

    2 ай бұрын

    Well I said "kind of cheaty" because it depends on your definition of cheating, as many do not consider using core mechanics of a game as cheating. Is playing on "very easy" difficulty cheating? Depends on your view I suppose. Some say no because difficulty is a core mechanic that allows you to customize your experience, others would say that it is because it hampers the AI and gives you benefits. I honestly don't think it matters, you bought the game so play it how you want, and there's no reason to give a crap about how others play their game. With that being said, I would personally say using the undo button liberally is cheating. However, I don' think it's cheating to undo a misclick, especially considering how easy it is to accidently upgrade tile improvements (it's a massive green button, there will be a ton of them all over the map as you move through the ages).
