Let's Play! Manila: The Savage Streets, 1945 (Turn One Tutorial)

This is a partial playthrough, and turn 1 tutorial, of the solitaire area movement wargame Manila: The Savage Streets, 1945. Designed by Michael Rinella and co-published by Revolution Games & Take Aim Designs. Manila is the second game in the Solitaire Area Movement Series, following on the heels of Stalingrad: Advance to the Volga, 1942.
After years of jungle fighting and island hopping the battle for Manila was the first urban fighting experienced by American forces during the war in the Pacific. The campaign by the American XIV Corps to defeat Iwabuchi’s forces and capture the city has been depicted in a handful of two-player designs in the past but is presented here in a new and exciting solitaire format, the second in a series of single-player area movement games by publisher Take Aim Designs.
Manila: The Savage Streets, 1945 puts the player in charge of the attacking and far more mobile American side while the game system handles the defending and largely static Japanese side. No two games will ever be the same. Each turn presents new and unique challenges for the player in the form of random events, uncertain supply deliveries, and unknown Japanese area strengths and defensive strategies.
The primary game is a nine-turn campaign covering the American assault on the city during February and March 1945. The deeper American forces advance, from the city’s less developed periphery to its urban business district and fortress-like government buildings, the greater Japanese resistance becomes. The number of American units fought to exhaustion, effectively out of action, mounts. American determination to secure a rapid victory for Supreme Allied Commander General Douglas MacArthur, represented as “morale” in the game, gradually decreases. The player wins by equaling or exceeding historical American gains and loses if they fail to do so, or if morale falls too low.
With a setup time of less than 15 minutes, low counter density, endless variability, and quick playing time, Manila: The Savage Streets, 1945 will appeal to every level of player, from the novice to the grognard.
Few battles at the end of the Second World War exceeded the destruction and brutality of the fighting in the city of Manila. MacArthur had hoped to spare the multicultural city and its roughly 800,000 inhabitants from the horrors of war, but failed. The fate of the city of Manila, the "Pearl of the Orient,” now rests with you.

Had played this game several times a month ago. And had some time to take the game for another spin today - and figured I’d watch your video again as quick refresh on the rules and gameplay in case I might have forgotten anything of note given that it’s been a month or so since last time I played. Impressed again by the quality of your video and clarity of your explanations of everything. So could not help but comment again to give you another thumbs up 👍on the video. 😎

I like this game a lot. The Stalingrad game in this series was excellent and this one is even a bit better with some of the evolution of the system. Easy set-up, lots of tension, small footprint and plays in 2-2.5 hours. All big plus factors for me. There will be a Berlin ‘45 game in this series at some point where you play a Soviet attacker against a German defender. Definitely looking forward to that one too.

Battle of Berlin sounds awesome! I bet the Battle of Hué would be really cool with this system as well. I hope to see a lot more games in this series, because it's a lot of fun and really well put together.

Enjoying your play through. Noting the differences between this and the Stalingrad game. I like that you do not become spent if you overrun.

@@WayneHansen its a good idea. Might make it a bit easier as the first game was really hard.

Learned something new. I thought I knew the rules, completely missed the overrun units stay fresh. Luckily I think I've had 1 overrun in 2 games. But that is a big difference for the US.

If you are used to Stalingrad: Advance to the Volga, 1942, it's an easy mistake to make.

Can you combine different units together, not from the same unit designation, to attack a single area or do they always have to be from the same unit when attacking?

I got it off Etsy, from C4 Labs. Specifically, it is the C4labs Tall Dice Tower with Walnut stain. It doesn't look like they make that exact same one anymore, but close to it.

@22:00, why not split up the 7-6 Armor units? Instead of leaving the 5-6 armor to lead the 2nd attack?

It's just a tutorial, not a strategy guide on the best way to play/win. Feel free to split up the Armor units as you wish.
