He had a map of the entire world drawn on sheets of paper taped together, and he encoded it into his Apple IIc a byte at a time. The whole thing was coded in assembly -- impressive. Not bad for a high schooler.

Do you know any hacks/cheats for this game for more lives? I'm an Apple ][ enthusiast and it's one of my faves but, like most of the old games, it's very unforgiving.

Cool to see someone else that liked this game, I was surprised to find no information on it. I don't have any cheats or trainers. I am a coder but never coded for Apple IIe, so don't know if I could patch it for infinite lives. I finished GadgeTz on an emulator (I used many save states and loaded when I died) but I didn't record it or make a map, so I'll have to do it again sometime. It's possible to waste your keys on the wrong doors and get yourself stuck with no choice but to restart.

I tried the debugger in AppleWin emulator. You can get unlimited lives while the game is running by pushing F7 to open debugger, type 922:EA and then F7 to close debugger.

I patched the image to give unlimited lives, so no need to use a debugger. My first ever Apple cheat patch. It was just a 1 byte change: gtamp.com/misc/gadgetz-vopper-unlimited-lives.dsk (edit: Just changing 0x922 DEC to NOP only seems to work when emulating an Enhanced Apple IIe, it crashes on other IIe systems. Changing 0x927 AE (LDX) to EE (INC) seems to have much better compatibility, the only difference is you will still lose one life but after that, it won't go down anymore.
