When I was making Wood Duck Boxes We always used a strip of wood with hardware cloth attached to it on the inside to help them. Get out of the box.

Add hardware cloth to the front of the nesting boxes on the inside. It will help the ducks and ducklings climb out.

@@whitehouseonthehill we made the same nesting boxes for wood ducks in our area. They couldn't climb out very well and the babies couldn't get out at all. After putting in the 1/2 inch hardware cloth leading to the hold it worked perfectly.

Wow, what a birthday present ! A 7 yo with great coordination and can handle his motorized cart. He will be able to tow things. The chicks are getting bigger. Loved the nesting boxes. Missouri had a few good warm days across the state this week. This has been an interesting but typical winter.

Might I suggest, since you have a little one that you put holes in that seat. If he decides to hide in it he could potentially suffocate. It has happened in toy boxes and footlocker. Just a safety precaution. Put the holes in the back where they aren't noticable. I know it is morbid, but necessary from a safety point of view.

Oh I did not even think of that but you are right. When kids play hide and seek they get very imaginative. And I was famous for putting my little brother somewhere and then just leaving him there. I finally got in trouble for it when my mom found my brother asleep in the back of closet.

I love Mandarin Ducks! Every Spring I have one pair tha that returns to my area. I photograph them at least per week until they migrate out, which is usually around the last of December. Thanks so much for sharing!

For the duck house you might want to put wire mesh on the inside of the box with the hole. It helps the ducks climb out. If you look up wood duck houses they all have that metal wire mesh on inside.

I'm absolutely amazed at how delicately Eli is handling the wee birds. I'm raising chickens in my yard and every now and again we hatch out some eggs and I always dread the neighbours children coming over and playing with the chicks, as they tend to be rather heavy handed. I guess part of growing up is realising that ''being raised in a barn'' should not have a negative connotation to it, heh... You guys are an inspiration!

You can cut narrow grooves up to the hole for ducklings to climb out or use rough grained sandpaper.

Yeah wood ducks are beautiful! I was watching about 30 wood ducks and a few hooded mergansers swimming in a small swamp area by my house. I love watching them. They are a lot of fun to shoot and taste great. But u don't like to shoot the ones that love about 40 yards from my house.

Wood ducks and mandarin ducks can mate, create hybrids which can make them problematic if released. Think you need a permit most places anyway

for the aviary, if you put in a pond you have to put in a mini windmill that doubles for electricity for lights. my local park has it and its really pretty at night

This channel is so wholesome. Thank you so much for being so uplifting. Recently my whole flock got killed and I’ve been very upset but this channel has helped me through it. Thank you so much. My chooks and ducks were like family to me, so having to deal with their deaths is very hard for me. We had them for eggs, so we did not eat them, but a predator broke into the coop and killed all of them over two nights. So i need more chooks. What breed would anyone recommend for the Australian climate.

G 1 australorps. They’re bred for Australia. I’d also get some guard geese. They’re slow growers but if a predator gets in, they’ll honk like crazy.
