Colorism is a daily marginalizing force in the lives of People of Color just like racism, sexism and classism. If there's any confusion about why it's such a big deal, Kim (@KimberlyNFoster) is here to clear it up.

It's not black people that deny colorism.. it's dark skin men and light skin women that deny colorism. I say this as a light skin woman that tries to make other light skin women understand their privilege, and it's like talking to a white person about racism.A lost cause 😩😩

You don’t know me White people are responsible for the spread of racism and colorism worldwide. During the age of imperialism and colonialism they brought along prejudice ideology and oppressed the native people. They also perpetuate it media. Most media outlets are run or produced by white people, they choose very commonly to either exclusively include light skin non whites or negative portrayals of dark skins ( or no minorities at all) Some white people feel less threatened by lighter skin people and can empathize with them more. Colorism manifest distinctively in different societies. Whites are no different in this regard, of course this not mean that they all are colorist but I think at this point majority of people of any background living in modern societies have been exposed to it in some form.

"Why is it across cultures, darker people suffer the most?" What I've noticed from my experience is dark skinned black men seem to have to most aversion to choosing a mate of the same complexion. Look at the power couple photo again. Swizz Beatz is the only exception. Yes, colorism crosses cultures, but this is something in the black community I have noticed as I got older. It seems colorism is targeted at women when discussed, but men suffer as well.

Diva C. Because the very embodiment of femininity is the most oppressed sex. *Since black symbolizes femininity, black is the most oppressed.* So, therefore 'the darker' you are as a female, the more oppression. Women will not have true liberation unless they elevate and fight for their darker-skinned sisters. Because through the dark-skinned women liberation from patriarchy+racism+colorism and many kinds of oppression against the female energy will end. Because the dark-skinned woman is the embodiment of female energy. The fate of all women and girls and the world lies in the hands of the dark-skinned female.

Right, on! I can really see your profile picture but im assuming you are Caucasian?! But even within white spaces I have seen instances of certain "feature preferences". I had a friend in middle school that was white. She had long straight blonde hair, blue eyes, and a soft tan complection, she was also tall and thin. However her sister had dark brown wavy hair, light brown/ hazel eyes, very white skin, and had freckles. Other than that they literally looked like the same person...just different coloration Another white woman came up to my blonde classmate and was like: oh! You are gorgeous i wish my hair was as blonde as yours...i have to dye mine to reach that color. Also your skin looks so nice. Meanwhile she said NOTHING to the brunette! I realized as I got older that ALL communities have this sort of thing. The only difference is white women are generally not oppressed by this phenomena (from what I can tell). Brunettes have their own spaces but are often not the face of white beauty...not to the extent of blondes with blue eyes.

This is the part of the colorism debate I hate because it’s ugly, hurtful and dismissive. Please note that African is a diverse continent in which our ancestors came from. Dark skinned Africans are specific to countries closest to the equator. So your comment negates “real” Africans who are not mixed that have naturally brown or light skin. Eg. South Africans.

One of my best friends is of Indian (as in from India) decent, who has multiple generations of history in a western country. Long story short when he got married (to another Indian person!) some in the bride's family objected because, well, there was a list (only middle class, a lower caste, a different religion... but also, he's very dark skinned)! White supremacist thinking has been internalized in the minds of a lot of non-white people.

If everyone would acknowledge that fact, we would be more able to accept everyone else and colorism would decrease because we would all have that in common...the fact that none of us is pure negroid or caucasoid. I don’t believe there are other races other than those 2. All other races are varying mixtures of negroid and caucasoid. Those are true scientific race terms. Black and white are colors that no one really is.

I'm not the only black man who would tell you that. For me it's more about being fairly attractive with a good attitude. Lifestyle, things I have in common with a woman, likes and dislikes. Also spiritual beliefs and how compatible a woman is for me. Virtue is definitely important to me. A truly virtuous woman would understand and appreciate everything I just stated. Only truly good men like me would agree and tell you the same thing in one way or another. Don't forget about body chemistry and how it plays a part in attractiveness.

Skin tone _alone_ is *not* enough to account for what all of those researchers and what black women are observing. It's more-so the European facial features that tend to accompany lighter complexions (likely due to admixture) that are placed above the African facial features that tend to be accompany darker skin. Lupita, for example, is African and has dark skin, but her facial features are somewhat reminiscent of European aesthetics (e.g. her nose width). But year, it's all f*ked up.

For Harriet There's a video on youtube of some cosplay convention from years ago. In it, there's a white woman, who has painted her skin black - jet black - to resemble some character. She makes a statement on camera that black men at the convention told her she looks better than black women. Extremely f*ked up, I know. But that's the mentality of _some_ black men. A lot of times it's more-so about women having European-like features rather than skin tone. It just so happens that lighter skin correlates with European-like features.

It has been historically like this: people who did manual or field labor had darker skin than those who worked indoors in cabinets. It was UNIVERSAL. Afrika, Asia, Europe it applied everywhere. So people who were not worn out by hard work had fair skin and preserved beauty.

  • @cherishdeb

Whiteness is not beauty, so to say that they preserved beauty is inaccurate and further perpetuates color based prejudice. Beauty doesn’t have a color. Colorism is rooted in classism, but it has nothing to do with how phenotypically beautiful you are. That’s the point. Colorism is about proximity to whiteness, not beauty. Whiteness is not beauty.

Real quick.... Colorism is real. It does not go both ways. True... However, most of the advantages listed for lighter skinned black people (with women bearing the burden of representation here) relies on knowing the exact number of lighter and darker skinned people. In short, how many lighter skinned and darker skinned black people are there in the US? In the world? I'm looking for a way to gage these statistics against solid numbers. If we can't do this then there is a problem with the data, and therefore, the conclusions drawn from said data. Right now I see evidence of social gains/advantages but not concrete structural gains/advantages for lighter skinned black people. Those social advantages guarantee NOTHING. Mostly because, lighter skinned black people are and come from black people and face those struggles black people face, except colorism. However, I understand that one (social) affects the other (structural) and visa versa.

I talk about women and colorism because I'm a woman. But if you look around a prison and see most of the black people there have dark skin and look at top black wage earners and see most of those people have light skin, you don't actually have to have an exact count of light-skinned and dark-skinned people in the U.S.

Did we ever come to a solution about this colorism that all shades of black face? My solution is raise our sons to have substance and respect and pursue women who look like them or are the same race as them. Mothers have the power. However, men will still go after women with nice features regardless of skin tone. I think the other solution is raising our daughters to own their femininity and beauty. We have mothers who are jealous of their daughters and make sure their daughters lose their hair/edges and feed them unhealthy food making them unsightly. These mothers don’t teach their daughters how to keep themselves up aesthetically and stay healthy. Put our daughters in sports. I put my brown skin daughter in cheerleading and tennis and taught her how to own her beauty and present herself if she wants to attract a man and she has had no problems with that. These things need to be addressed. And the jealousy needs to be addressed.

What also continues to go unexamined is how Black men internalize colorism. Often when we talk about colorism Black women become the face, especially when we’re talking about dating, marriage, and relationships. But Black men are rarely discussed when it comes to their self-perceptions, and how those are manifested in the women they say they’re attracted to. I have overheard more then a few conversations between Black men where they mock one another’s skin tone. “Stop being so light skinned!” “I can’t see you in the dark, n!gg@.” These comments start in the homes and communities of Black boys at an early age. But instead of us stopping to talk about that abusive language, giving young boys an opportunity to validate their hurt, they’re socialized into choosing a mate that will either validate their blackness (which we often see with light skinned Black men) or attempt to dilute their darkness (which we often see with dark skinned Black men.) I don’t completely blame Black men for projecting their colorist insecurities onto both light skinned and dark skinned Black partners. I do blame sexism which once again expects women to do the emotional labor of healing an entire community. Like all emotional labor, it’s burdensome and doesn’t really expect men to rise to occasion of being emotionally-available partners. We as Black women can no longer expect to solve the colorism issue without Black men. For the sake of our communal relationships and intimate partner relationships, we must do the work of healing together.

Darker skin women want a family too and feel they have limited choices in men compared to light skin women. I feel that has merit but I also feel like men go after women who have pretty facial features, long hair or hairstyle that is attractive, a nice figure/body, nice smile or approachable looking women...there are many factors and men are visual. As a result of this colorism, there is great division between black women. Seems like the majority not all brown and dark skin women have something against light skin women off top.
