    I'm a cis het woman and I also appreciate seeing how non-binary people interact with gendered fashion. I grew up in super conservative American churches in the 80s and 90a, and I think the way the American church so forcefully superimposed super narrow ideas of acceptable fashion choices onto super narrow acceptable gender expression really did a number on the collective psyche of the American public. I remember hating having my clothing choices restricted because of my gender as a child, and started hating dresses and skirts because of those who would restrict me to them. Once I was on my own for a few years, I started loving them because of how comfortable they are and how superior they are to shorts, as long as you don't intend to hang upside down from tree branches or swing sets, which I was now much less prone to do... I remember the feeling of being restricted because of my gender making me not want to be that gender, when the things that appealed to me didn't line up with the prescribed clothing or activities for me. I think we probably have that in common. Ultimately, in my case, it wasn't my gender I had a problem with. It was the restrictions and expectations that came with my assigned gender, but I have a feeling that everyone at some point in their lives feels somewhat restricted by the weirdly binary nature of fashion, and maybe it's comforting on some level to non-binary persons to know that it's not just you who find it a struggle. All this to say, I think the interplay of fashion and gender expression is fascinating, and my hope is that as content like this educates the general public on fashion history and, by extension, gender expression history, conservatives will eventually recognize that the standards of the 1950's aren't from the Bible and don't actually determine right and wrong...🙃 I love this channel and what I've learned from it. I love seeing how empowering it is to make your own clothes, literally and figuratively tailoring them to what *suits* you, rather than what everyone else likes. I have a theory that we all look the best in the things we feel most ourselves in, and that a big part of choosing what we wear is learning to love who we are, and being brave enough to share that with the world whether we think they will like us or not. I said a lot of words, but I'm trying to say that Bernadette's videos, along with other costubers' are a really valuable contribution to society on many levels. The knowledge I've gained here has significantly enriched my life and I'm wholeheartedly grateful.

Hope it helps 😊 *Antique Menswear* *Vintagebursche* *Dandy Wellington* _(does a lot of jazz history and things, but also wears vintage menswear)_ *Old Guy Vibes* *RetroSamme97* _(mainly 30’s and 40’s menswear)_ *The Gentleman’s Gazette* _(more of a classic menswear channel, but they have a series called what they wore, and it goes from the 1900’s to the 1960’s.)_ If there’s any more I think of, I’ll update the list. honestly I've been thinking the same. I'm at the stage of transition where a lot of dysphoric things have been resolved and it's time to start dressing the way I want- unfortunately, modern day fashion doesn't lend to unusual/non-standard body types well, and I do not have the time or money to pay someone else to alter things. So... why not learn to make or alter for myself? (I already did it with gender, so clothing should be a fun new challenge lol)

    @@johnforeman6620 It’s about body type/shape and the fit. For a nonbinary person with a more “feminine” shape, current menswear will typically have shoulders that are too wide, and a hip area that is too tight to fit properly. (Transmen come across the same issues depending on body shape.)

    @@johnforeman6620 I'm guessing their point is that ill-fitting modern clothes aggravate the dysphoria... because that's what happens to me. But my problem is that I'm big. Big men's shirts are still so voluminous that it's like donning a tent. But I have to aim for large sizes because, alas, I have large mammaries that I haven't been able to get rid of. As a trans man, this is exactly the video I needed. I’ve got a wider pelvis than what most men’s fashion these days is designed for. My current sewing project is a pair of 1890’s men’s trousers, using a pattern I bought from Black Snail Tailoring (I don’t remember the name exactly, but it was something with Black Snail, they’ve got historical menswear and womenswear patterns). I’ve only just cut out the pattern pieces and pinned them to the fashion fabric, as cutting it seems too daunting at the moment.

    I’m trans masc and I have avoided interacting with historical fashion for myself just because I don’t think I could handle the dysphoria of looking in the mirror and seeing something obviously masculine (clothing) turned into a feminine shape (body). I have ended up just focusing on repair of my existing clothing because I don’t want to spend tens of hours on something I end up hating on myself. How difficult do you find it to make the patterns into something you can use? I don’t know your body type or dysphoria level of course.

  • @sleepynightowl1550

    @sleepynightowl1550

    A very crucial point to success is: you have to have a mock up! That is were you can adjust to your hearts content and are also allowed to mess up. Just redo it. In historical fashion women used padding methods to reach the aspired silhouette without having the body type for it. You can do the same, don't be shy about it. It's just the modern way of thinking that our bodies have to look a certain way in order to be able to wear specific clothing. Historically it has always been the clothing that has been catered to the body type to make it work. Best of luck in your sewing endeavors! @@crowsong8097
