When I first heard this in 1969, I cried like a baby. Mac Davis wrote this for Elvis. I was 17 and not looking forward to my eighteenth birthday. Vietnam was raging and tearing the soul and the fabric of America apart. I was brought up in the projects, and I have seen this song play out more than once. Poverty breeds a sense of hopelessness which then turns to anger. I was almost beaten to death when I was six years old by a thirteen-year-old boy. He knocked out all my teeth and kicked me in the dirt like I was less than a human being.. Ya'll we have to love one another. Thank you for a great song that needs to hit the charts again today. I did go into the army and watched Vietnam tear our nation apart, and its soul is still wounded. This is your boy in Tennessee trying to spread the love of Jesus Christ. If we all lived for him and loved one another, hatred would stop, and there would be no crime.

@@user-rk4jx4zc5d AND he did all that was asked of him. He went on KP duty, guard duty, and field duty just like everyone else. Any soldier that could afford it would live off base. He was offered to entertain and not have to do those things, but said he wanted to be like every other soldier and not take advantage. Despite his fame, Elvis was always just one of the guys, Wiggison said. In fact, he inspired the other men to be better, stronger soldiers. "When things got tough," said Wiggison, "you could be out at night, it's cold and raining and you're on guard duty, and he was out there, too. If he could do it, that made me feel like, OK, I can do this!" "I want everyone to know," he said, "how good a person Elvis was. He was the kind of person I loved being around." And he smiles wide when telling the story of the time he was drafted into the military with the most famous person on the planet. The years he spent with Elvis clearly had a lasting impact. "He stuck with it," Wiggison said about Elvis. "He did his job as well as I did mine, and I appreciated that. It was great!"

Because Elvis was sooo nervous about performing live, the producer said he could just go out, say hi and then leave, that would be enough! I think he knew Elvis would , once on stage, fall into his love of entertaining and thrive off the energy of the audience and his old friends, whom he persuaded to go on with Elvis, recreating their original manner of recording together. Again such an observant reaction, you are definitely a kindred Elvis spirit now!!👌💕🕺

When producer-director Steve Binder walked into the dressing room, Elvis told him I don't remember the songs, I forgot the lyrics, I'm can't go out there, & Binder said if you walk out, just way hello & walk off, you ARE going out. And that is how severely nervous Elvis was. Take a look at 2 amazing stand-up center stage performances from this special: (1) "Blue Suede Shoes" (2:50 min.) (the fuller version) from sitting to a real fun ending at kzread.info/dash/bejne/c59praebmZu0kcY.html (2) "Jailhouse Rock" kzread.info/dash/bejne/amuCmLOaYKede7w.html (1:50 min.) -- very different than the rehearsed choreographed film version -- these performances are Elvis unleashed, doing what he freely did the best. Together they total just 4 min. long so it's possible for you to do one then follow it w-the other. And thank you.

This part of his 68 special was "like sitting in the front room with our favorite star" (adding the following) or better yet sitting with an old friend who had been sorely missed; lost to a place that didn't love him or respect him like we did - lost to a place called Hollywood. In 68 fans everwhere welcomed Elvis home, performing live, on stage in front of his adoring fans instead of behind a movie screen. ❤ An ELVIS fan, then, now & forever.

Yes, it does contribute a great deal that he never did take himself too seriously. It's a great personal quality.

Elvis had not performed live on stage in many years! He was so nervous the director /producer had to kind of push him to go out on stage! Lol. That's why the director set it up like a jam session you would do in a studio ...instead of a live performance. Like you noticed and pointed out.... it gives it more of an intimate setting. It enabled Elvis to relax a lot more and get into the music rather than worrying about the audience.

This is his first time on stage in 10 years. He was in the army for two years and in Hollyweird making movies for 8. Elvis was back, then the Vegas years came and took him away. 😢

I just love your reactions. Not only are they always spot on, but your voice is so soothing and your smile so genuine and beautiful. As to the ‘68 Comeback Special, I know one thing … my butt would’ve had to be velcroed to that stage and my arms wrapped like a mummy with duct tape for me to stay seated politely and keep my hands off of him. Truth! Great reaction, as always! Much love ❤️

Thank you for reacting to this epic performance. I think Elvis music is for all generations ( just my opinion). I remember hearing a few of his musicians and back-up singers say they never knew exactly what he was going to do on stage because he might change his mind at the last minute as to his song choices. They had to follow him very closely and they all were masterful at keeping up with him. I thought all of them were amazing together. ...masters of their craft.❤ And yes....definitely yes...Elvis was beyond handsome ❤

Stunning in every way. Went to the annual Elvis festival in the town of Parkes, NSW, Australia 2 years ago. Absolutely wonderful. People come from across the world to attend and of course, hordes of impersonators. The train from Sydney to Parkes is affectionately called the Elvis Express! The festival has been going for 30 odd years now. He is truly loved and it would seem, timeless. A legend indeed.

This was from his "comeback" special. I remember watching it on tv (I was 19 years old). This section of it was what all of us rockers of the day wanted from him, after he was over-Hollyood-ized in sill movies and such. I remember giving him standing ovations in my parent's rec room. It was so good to have the King back.

Elvis Was So Nervous He Didn’t Want To Come Out. The Producer Steve Binder Said You Got To Go Out I Don’t Care If You Say Goodbye Or Hello Just Get Out There. He Did Put On A Good Show Playing Guitar And Singing His Old Songs. His Manager Wanted His To Do Christmas Songs. Binder Wanted To Show Who Elvis Really Was. The Whole 68 Special Was Fantastic.

That was just one "take" from the '68 Comeback Concert. You should watch the whole concert some time. Elvis was the best looking guy in the world and the greatest entertainer in the world, and yet he was a humble, spiritual, generous human being. Long Live The King❤❤

Bless his heart he never took himself seriously and loved to clown around and have fun even making fun of himself at times. He had not sung some of these songs for a decade or more and did indeed sometimes forget the lyrics largely added to him being nervous about whether his fans would still accept him after being off the stage for so long RIP ELVIS gone too soon but never forgotten

Everything about this is amazing! Also this was a recording for tv. He sang each song multiple times so I feel like he was having more fun with the audience and still getting the best material for tv. Whereas a live concert performance he took more seriously for the fans
