People forget why Elvis is the King. His vocals are amazing. You should hear his version of Bridge Over Trouble Waters, Unchained Melody, If I Could Dream... But overall he has a lot of power and there was nothing back in 60s to amplify or help. It's all his voice. 🙌🏼

What you don't understand it - Elvis INVENTED THIS. He was the first. Everybody else is a copy. When you say that you didn't know he could perform this way or sing like that I had to comment - he gave this to the world, he wasn't one of many, he was the original. Elvis was not hype, he could not be created and promoted, his popularity was organic and real - he blew the world up.

I love watching people’s faces and body language when they are encountering Elvis for the first time. Listening then moving to his beat, then eyes staring and jaw dropping as the performance progresses. Mainly because they have no idea of the real talent behind the legend because all they have heard is about the caricature of the man. Fans of Elvis, old and now new, are very loyal as he was. Once an Elvis fan, always an Elvis fan. And we love seeing reactors today, falling in love with his voice, his musicality, his creativity, his personality and his humanitarianism. He recorded over 700 songs, served 2 years in the US Army, made 31 movies, 2 documentaries enthralled Vegas for years and toured all over America , selling millions and millions of records worldwide. ( vinyl of course, no downloads or streaming then!) As a contrast to this recording, do listen to his beautiful rendition in the same 68 Special, of the song “ Memories”. You’ll see another side of Elvis. He loved singing Gospel and won a Grammy for his performance of “ How Great Thou Art” see his 1977 performance of that one to hear the emotion, power and belief in the song. Please do more Elvis. As a preacher said of Elvis, “ he’s a bundle of energy put to music” & “ his echo will never die!” Thank you very much 🙏👌💕🕺

Thank you for your great reaction. You can't imagine in 1956 when I was a 12 year old girl and saw this beautiful man on the Ed Sullivan show, it was like a freight train hit me. My father didn't want me to watch him. No one had seen anything like him. The teachers, preachers and most adults thought he should be banned from the airways. Seriously, he paid his dues to get here. You should see a piece of history in the short doc "Elvis Presley and the Black Community". When black people were the only ones accepting Elvis in the racist 50's . Thanks and be blessed

Elvis was the whole pkg. Handsome, charismatic and a voice that no one could copy. Micheal by the way looked up to Elvis. One of the reasons he married Lisa his daughter. I saw him 4 times and Micheal once, I have never seen an artist that captivated people like Elvis. He had the IT factor. Micheal was great but never equaled Elvis. Remember there was no internet. NO auto TUNE. No one even did concerts like that. You kind of look like Elvis. You could rock the look with a rap song. He is a rabbit hole that I have been down for 60 years. First time I saw him was at the Forum in LA about 1960. Women were seriously throwing bras at him. Unreal. Never saw another concert like that in my life. He was staying at the same hotel in Hawaii. He was very nice and funny.

Decades later, he still holds the record for most singles sold at over 1 Billion and is also in Top 5 for album sales world wide. Those of his records that have been broken, only have been by those that took many more years to do it.

So what was Elvis' actual contribution to music? It was specifically love, timing, environment and distribution. Ok so Rock music is primarily made up of several strains of Country music (all invented by white artists), Gospel (Christian music was originally invented by Roman choirs before the birth of Christ. ) and the Blues (invented by black artists). Lets add to that the legendary song writers (such as Leiber and Stoller). Then the instruments which were made in Italy, Germany, Africa, China and the Middle East among others. That is where rock and roll sprang from. Rock is NOT BLACK MUSIC. It is YOUNG PEOPLE MUSIC. It was created by YOUNG PEOPLE for YOUNG PEOPLE in an era of YOUTH REVOLUTION. Rock was the first music genre of the modern age that was CREATED FOR AN AGE GROUP and NOT A RACE of people. Elvis is the only musician ever to be inducted into the Gospel, Blues, Country and Rock & Roll Halls of Fame. Elvis was different, and his perspective was different than most white people of his day, especially among other whites in the South. Elvis grew up in the poorest parts of the South during the Great Depression and Segregation. And he understood the very lowest depths of poverty. Only 4 white families on his block, he lived and played with black children while living in a 1 room shotgun shack with NO running WATER and NO ELECTRICITY. His father built the home with a borrowed $150, then lost it because they couldn't afford to pay it back. How poor was Elvis? The Presleys were so poor that they couldn't afford a coffin when Elvis' twin brother Jesse Garon Presley was born stillborn, so Jesse had to be buried in a shoebox. Elvis was uniquely born at a time and place, Tupelo (SHAKERAG) AND Memphis (BEALE STREET) when so much new music and dance were happening. And So MUCH DIVISION and HATE if you were poor and/or black. Elvis paid royalties to black songwriters THAT ASKED ELVIS to sing and re-arrange their song and vice versa. Elvis created A WHOLE NEW STYLE AND SOUND that was VERY CREATIVE.... by merging GOSPEL, R&B, Pop music, Rockabilly and Country. Rock was a MERGING OF CULTURES and GENRES. Every young person in the 50s was yearning for a new sound and Elvis' style was a FIRST, and he merged everything together the BEST for the young people. Elvis sang, arranged, produced, danced, acted, and had a God crafted voice that was entirely UNIQUE and sought after. Elvis was already honing his voice and skills in the 1940s in the church scene long before Little Richard or Chuck Berry ever cut a single record. Elvis was trained by black musicians in black churches and white musicians in white churches in the 1940s. Rev W Herbert Brewster of the East Trigg Baptist Church asked Elvis to join in 1948 when he was 13, after Elvis and his family moved to Memphis. They were jamming before and during the legendary black musicians got heard. He was able to merge music genres and black and white culture better than anyone and created the sound and stage performance of Rock and Roll. AND as soon as ELVIS started to make money -- THEY ALL MADE MONEY! Little Richard talked about this: "He sung my Tootie Fruti & by him singing it, made it bigger & made ME bigger" And then he said: “I thank God for Elvis Presley. I thank the Lord for sending Elvis to open the door so I could walk down the road...”- Little Richard Elvis WAS the biggest part of the change from the old style of music to Rock and Roll. He absolutely was an ACTUAL PIONEER of the modern sounds and stage presentations that we know today. He co-invented Rock and Roll with Little Richard and Fats Domino and Chuck Berry and others. He WAS a pioneer. Its not culture appropriation / culture vulture when you are a pioneer of a sound. Elvis never stole a song. He credited everyone, ensuring all songwriters were listed next to every song on each album. No exceptions. Elvis was friends with all the legends.. B.B. King, Otis Blackwell, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Roy Hamilton and many more. You can't STEAL "COOL" You cant steal "RHYTHM". You cant steal "SOUL". You can't STEAL "HOW TO DANCE". You can't steal "HOW TO SAAANG". You either HAVE THESE SKILLS, or you do NOT. ELVIS THE ARRANGER: Elvis was ABLE TO MERGE MUSIC AND CULTURE better than any one else alive at the time. Elvis didn't only help the black community of artists, that man tore down walls of racism for everyone. He stood up and did it a man's way. Without concern for his own health and safety, his career, or his quality of life. This gets talked about by the great, late Reverend himself. Elvis and the Black Community. A great collaboration of interviews by legends and historic figures in the black community discussing Elvis. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qphl0rqwYafTo6Q.html&t=

Thanks for your reaction. So, you're only 27 or 28? Elvis was 33 in 1968. And sure, he oozed charisma, but it didn't hurt that he was gorgeous, too, LOL. Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (kzread.info/dash/bejne/fqZ6pduHfdnAh84.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

Elvis brought me to your channel. He was amazing and if you let yourself go down the rabbit hole you won't be sorry. I am a fan of Micheal Jackson too. Fun Fact...Elvis' daughter, Lisa Marie, was once married to Micheal Jackson.

In ‘68 I was 7yrs old. It was the 1st time I was blessed enough to attend a Elvis concert. I accompanied my mom & sister (who was 8 at the time). Evidently it was cheaper to purchase concert tickets, then to hire a babysitter.

There's a couple performances during this special where he forgot the words and his guitar became unplugged and he just laughs it off like they were jammin' in the garage. The dude is so humble...my GOAT

Please do more Elvis....You can't go wrong with his music. He is the biggest recording artist of all time with over a billion recordings sold and over 750 records recorded. You can't go wrong. He sings everything from rock n roll to gospel to ballads, etc. and is in at last 4 different hall of fames.

Elvis was fantastic. He was so humble and loved people. He would try to do anything to make people happy. He looked at his fellow man as his brother or sister. He wasn't into racism - he just saw the person.

The bit I love the most? Just before he lets rip in the second just of the first verse, while the camera is in close up, he warns us of what's to come when he says, "alright son..." Then the hairs on the back of everyone's neck stand up.

Performing with Elvis here is his original band member, guitarist Scotty Moore, who with bassist Bill Black started rock in roll by recording their version of Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup’s song That’s All Right on July 5, 1954 at Sam Phillip’s Memphis Recording Service’s recording studio. Elvis’s original drummer DJ Fontana, who is also seen in this video, joined the band a few months later, soon after Elvis started playing on the radio show The Louisiana Hayride. Sadly, Bill Black had passed away a few years earlier. This also was the last time Elvis, Scotty and DJ would perform together. Charlie Hodge, whom Elvis met while in the Army, is seen playing guitar here as well.

When I was 10 years old my aunt gave me her Elvis collection…this was about a year after he passed. I was hooked immediately. There are singers who are technically good…then there’s Elvis. His music comes from his soul and touches the listeners soul. And you’re right, he definitely had charisma, and much more. At the time I wondered why she was giving me her collection, turns out she was very ill and died 2 months later. You might wanna check out his cover of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “If I Can Dream”.

Elvis is timeless... think about it, from his vocals, to his music, to his style to his fans... nearly 50 years after his death he is still getting new young fans, women still love him and so do men... I live in the Memphis area so I've been immersed in his life since the 50's when it was common to see him on the street, or the local drugstore.. he was our guy, we loved him then and we love him now. He will likely always be remembered. The anniversary of his death brings 10's of thousands people from around the world to Graceland. It is a glorious celebration and a reminder of his greatness. His demons finally got him and he was a very imperfect man but he was generous and kind and you never heard him say an unkind word or be critical of anyone. If you want the full story on E, you should come to Graceland where you will be shocked at his history and his contribution to music as a whole.
