I seriously was a big naysayer on jumping on board with any of those models. I had my fill with the Line 6 HD500. I liked their Pocket Pod but everything around that time frame sucked! Yeah now on my pc I have Two Notes stuff & Polychrome DSP. I still love my amps but definitely understand the move to using various forms of units for touring ease as well as just saving what's left of my back! You blew my mind during the Christmas season and hearing your rig with the Line 6 updates on the Helix family. I could easily have sworn that you were using a tube amp! Your tones were amazing! I'm definitely a believer now!

Out of the big dogs, I have an FM9, Kemper Stage, & Pod Go. I use the Pod Go almost exclusively. It's light, travel friendly, easy to tweak on the fly, and has an expression pedal. It's just plain fun to use! And EASY. People underestimate just how important ease of use is.

Steve I commented on your post before and I've had a line 6 Helix floor unit for over 5 years and was bouncing back and forth between that and the AX8 then when the FM 9 turbo came out which I was on the waiting list for a year and I finally got the invitation December 2022 I quickly bought one. This unit has been a game-changer so much that I sold the line 6 Helix and AX8. Every time I turn around with every update I am just blown away with the sounds that I'm getting and how easier it is to navigate within this unit. Sure it is a learning curve. I am so happy that I invested in this unit. I have no regrets. I'm not saying the others are bad it's just to me the sound quality that I get out of this unit is so amazing. Right now I have it going into back of return of two tubes amps. Since I did not want to invest in the attenuator and I needed to play at night with the headphones, that this unit is perfect for me. I like the best of both worlds. Keep up the good work and rock on 🤘😎

For me the Tonex pedal with my own time based/ modulation effectspedals does the job. Some of us don't need 100000 possibilities in a unit. It sounds nothing worse then my kemper or QC. Small formfactor and the price is good too. Play with what you have and make it your own, that's the key.

What up Steve! I'm actually more happy with my QC than I ever have been after purchasing a few Worship Tutorials capture presets. I got the new Gen 2 Fender Pro Verb 67 and the Orange OR120 and I am super impressed with the amount of work and the level of detail they put into their presets. For the first time in a long time I can track with a modeler and feel like I am getting super realistic tones. The Gen 2 Matchless C30 just dropped and I am going to pick that up as well!

I had a QC and after 1 year I sold it. I never connected with it and I spent more time being irritated about one thing or another than enjoying it. I don't miss it. I don't do captures. I put together a nice pedalboard with a Dream 65 at the center of it and was happy with it. I play at church every week. Then the TMP came along and I sold everything and have only my TMP and my guitars. I love the interface and play mostly with just a few pedals in my chain. My favorite amp in it is the 59 Bassman so far. I play edge of breakup tones and it hits the spot for me. I look forward to your podcast Steve and you are one of my favorites here on KZread. God bless.

Pod cast on amp modelers is a great idea. It sure seems to be the wave of the future, (or now) I’ve switched to the Quad, and no body is as old school as me. I hope the pod cast is a big success. I watched a number of reviews on the FM-9 and was more than convinced the Quad was for me. I do not like the sound of the Helix at all though I know you do. My feelings is the Quad is the best sounding unit on the market. If it had scribble strips and the foot switches was a bit further apart it would be perfect. Love your videos Steve.

My Helix LT just gets it done for me. I have a handful of presets/amps that I like a lot. I generally pick a preset to go with the guitar of choice at that night's gig. Each preset has four snapshots (clean, less, normal, more) plus four stomp boxes for on the fly options. I really don't care if it sounds "the best" because the audience doesn't care about your sound as long it doesn't suck. We do the silent stage thing, and my biggest beef is the IEMs are uninspiring to listen to compared to an amp, but if it helps keep the volume down at the crappy bar gigs we play and makes the owners/audience happy, then I'll live with it.

Been using the Helix since 2018. Just made the switch to the FM3. When combined with the ampero switch and an expression pedal it does the same as my Lt. But the feel, in my opinion, is far superior to the Helix. Got my first gig with the Fm3 this saturday and looking forward to using the Fm3. So far the only thing where I am concerned is how difficult it is to edit on the unit compared to the Helix.

In 2020 I went from an Ax8 to a helix, because the Ax8 was too cumbersome for me to program. It is a tweakers delight, however options paralysis got the best of me. I just recently ditched the helix for the Quad Cortex, as I had a love hate relationship with the helix. My problem was that I did not absolutely LOVE the tones that I got from the helix, they were just ehh, ok...I found that in order to get a good useable tone I had to do a little fighting and eq'ing with the preset and that annoyed me. Now I am not saying the QC is the holy grail, but it has been absolutely perfect for me. The workflow, the tones, the captures that I can DL/buy, the ir integration...I am excited as they seem to be updating right at the perfect time.

Steve, you (and I've seen others) say about for example Headrush doesn't have frequent enough updates. Then you're saying you use one sound with a few pedals. So, what are you missing with it not being updated? My only beef with the MX5 I tried was lack of the computer editor. Sounds were great. I'm starting to think having too much available is a problem. I think if you try one modeler and you like the sounds it makes, why keep trying all the others? The odds are very high that if you get another modeler, the sounds/patches you create will be incredibly similar to the last one and the one before it. That's my two cents, thanks, Steve!

I do it for content and to try to helps others make their decisions, as well as use them professionally. The HRP is just enormous and extremely annoying to adjust because of no desktop editor. I have been a Fractal user for a long time and still haven't found anything that can compete with the tone and flexibility of that unit. The learning curve is a beast, but if you put in the time, you can do pretty much anything with those units. I find the Friedman IR-X to be a fantastic solution for analog purists who still want the flexibility of a silent stage and a direct option. That thing feels amazing to play and sounds wonderful. I have a full "traditional" pedalboard with that at the heart and I love it. I would absolutely love to see a "Twin Sister" or "Dirty Shirley" version of the IR-X - I think that footprint has a lot going for it moving forward.

I'm late to the party but after trying a G20 my mind is blown....no not at the moment no...but soon I see actual amps pumping out 15 watt heads with smaller footprint and UI with Software. Two notes n etc . I'm a huge Helix guy and love all the others like it sure. But like you said still nothing really beats a tube amp. I see more than one manufacturer getting ready to cash in on the smaller rig tube amps to be even smaller in the future. Then combine with things like stomp, n all other smaller modelers . Podcast sounds interesting. One downside of proliferation of capture technology is there isn't any cross compatibility. They need to arrive at one common capture format or at least have the ability to convert captures to work with different units. Who wants to take new captures of all their amps/pedals just so they can change to a new unit? Or buy all new captures from one of the people that do that stuff for a living.

I own a Tonex, an HX Stomp, and a Headrush Core. I have also owned a Quad Cortex. My daily driver is the Headrush Core. The Prime is awesome but it's too big without an editor. When the Quad Cortex sounds good it's the best and most inspiring unit. However it's on the expensive side and not necessarily THAT much better then the other units. The HX Stomp is great sounding and easy to use as long as you are connected to a computer for editing. For almost a year, I used my Headrush Gigboard as my primary unit. It's built like a tank, it's relatively inexpensive, it has a form factor that allows it to easily sit on a desk. The touchscreen makes creating new sounds very easy, even on the go. And it sounds great. The Core takes everything i just said up two notches. The Headrush community is much smaller and the updates are not as impressive (or as timely). I totally understand I'm in the minority but the price, feature set, and sound keep me coming back when i have other options I can choose from. Get rid of the Prime and try a Core.

Somebody who is using $1500+ flagship modelers is understandably going to be less impressed by something like Headrush Core. It's a good product at a good price, but there will still be areas where the price difference shows.

I guess they always could release one just because but it’s already very difficult to use up the DSP on an Axe FX III/Turbo and it’s constantly getting updates. It’s best in class and I can’t imagine what benefits more processing power would add especially if there’s an associated price increase.

I welcome agnostic videos that discuss Modelers (Profilers, Plugins, Captures, Software, VSTs, that are geared towards the same result) and how to get the most out of them, and also getting feedback to their Manufacturers to help them know what they're getting right, and wrong. There are a lot of great Modelers, etc. available these days, and as time goes on, they just get better, more versatile, and more affordable. I think it's important to keep an eye on the Ampero Stage 2, as there is a lot to like about it, and if they regularly update it, I think other Modelers are going to need to up their game. Also, I think you should keep an eye on NAM. I hope Line 6 adds it to their line of Modelers by making its Capture/Profiling ability available via Software run on a computer, such as Helix Native and/or HX Edit, and the results be downloadable to the hardware Units for live use. Thanks

Used to carry a JCM900 half stack from Greenpoint Brooklyn up to Manhattan for a gig (bass player would help me) - on the Q subway! But I can't imagine the Axe FX 3 in the amps place. Imagine 6 beers in and your trying to fire up the Axe FX! No way! But I love my Axe FX - but I just got a Big Muff and I'm going into 2 amps a JCM900 and a Fender Twin - holy shit is it loud! Yeah I have the best of both worlds and tonight the Big Muff is taking it!

Well in NYC you have to play at midnight so you have not much to do but drink beer from 9pm till midnight. The one time Stings kids was there! I double booked my band as two bands. Had a few beers and we got on stage. I spilt a entire pink of beer down my JCM900 amp. I stopped working - so I wandered over to the bass player and noticed he had 2 inputs! He shook his head "noooooo" - I plugged in anyway and "POP"! Sounds guy comes running up "Get the $%#& of the stage - your the most unprofessional band I've ever worked with". I have to explain to the guy we are the next band too! By the end of the night Stings kid is coming up and shaking my hand. I go piss and the sound guy comes in and starts pissing - "that was a great show man". @@maynardburger

No interest in capturing for me, since I sold off all my amps LOL. I started on Helix, for years, and it's great. That said, I've been on Fractal guy for a few years now (FM3 &FM9) and I love their stuff. I like the workflow, and the power and depth of the unit and editor. The Friedman IR-X, and new Revv G30 look super cool too.

AI is going to be a game-changer for digital amp modelling - because it will be possible to produce digital models which will absolutely have no discernible difference in sound output ( to the human ear ) to that of the amp sound that they are modelled from. I think the route here will be through digital apps. So that anyone with a smart phone and some kind of fairly standard hardware will have access to all manner of amp models and pedal amp set-ups. Of course there will always be some who will miss the random noise involved in pedal daisy chains and knob twiddling - but that is never going to be the way for the next generation of guitarists.

  • @lylaznboi01
    @lylaznboi013 ай бұрын

I think regardless if you're using a modeler or the actual thing, you'll have a great sound as long as you know how to use it or what pedals you need to get the sound you're after. A lot of guitar players who are not involved in the digital world do firmly believe that analog is the way to go and using modelers is cheating. While it does sound better, it's also on the user to make it sound good. In terms of digital, Fractal, I feel, will always be on the top of the digital amp modeling world, but it's also one of the more expensive side if you buy the Axe FX 3. It's about $2300 USD right now. Other major amp modeling companies also sound good, whether it be a plugin or hardware. I think the Quad Cortex is now finally good after their updates. I might consider buying one myself for reamping purposes.

I have the headrush core, I sing also so it does solve a problem for live one person band. You’re right though it’s not very inspiring in relation to using for creative purposes. I hate that there is no live view dashboard so I can monitor levels and routing. I’m over the cute little graphic interfaces, just give me the ability to see what’s happening live. MIDI is very limited, rig signal chain options is a joke, Bluetooth has no functions other than audio. I wish they could at least make a mirroring app to control the unit using the Bluetooth. I hate bending over. Too many finger taps to get to level monitoring and I can only monitor one level at a time, I want to monitor all of my parameters like a mixer view. I use external midi foot switches on the floor and use the core at desktop level. I have to build 12 of the same rig in order to have key changes in vocal fx, makes presets very clunky when banking up or down. More midi would solve many problems.

You can't do 1 guitar path on 2 rows. If you want a huge rig, you have to scroll to get to the blocks off screen. Yes, I have really used it. You can do multiple signal chains, but long ones don't fit on the screen and you can't have a second row unless you use a second input

@@SteveSterlacci So, you would like to have the ability to take a long signal chain and put it in multiple rows for ease of visibility. That's an interesting idea. Maybe they could outline each signal chain with a different color and let you drag the signal chain down to a new row. Perhaps control the image size of the effects. Interesting.

@dv8322 yes! Exactly. Its hard for me to not compare to what other units offer, but that seems to be standard on every other unit to have all the blocks visible on the screen. I like to see the block being bypassed. I like the size idea as well! I dont need the graphics when I'm gigging, I'd be okay with general block icons and seeing them be bypassed

It’s 30 years since the original POD was released, and I remain unconvinced.. of course anyone who hasn’t actually played a decent valve amp will have no benchmark to comprehend, and I suppose in that context, modellers may win out in the end as players want lighter kit and valve manufacturers dwindle. But heck these things are getting more expensive now than a decent valve amp. 😂
