Sonic the Hedgehog is a platform game developed by Sonic Team[c] and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis console. The game was first released in North America in June 1991, and in PAL regions and Japan the following month. The game features an anthropomorphic hedgehog named Sonic in a quest to defeat Doctor Robotnik, a scientist who has imprisoned animals in robots and stolen the magical Chaos Emeralds. Sonic the Hedgehog's gameplay involves collecting rings as a form of health and a simple control scheme, with jumping and attacking controlled by a single button.
The game's development began in 1990 when Sega ordered its AM8 development team to create a game featuring a mascot for the company. After considering a number of suggestions, the developers decided on a blue hedgehog with spikes along his head and spine and renamed themselves "Sonic Team" to match their character. Sonic the Hedgehog, designed for fast gameplay, was influenced by the games of Super Mario series creator, Shigeru Miyamoto. Sonic the Hedgehog uses a novel technique that allows Sonic's sprite to roll along curved scenery, which originated in a tech demo created by the game's programmer, Yuji Naka.
The game was well received by critics, being considered one of the greatest of all time, with praise given to its visuals, audio, and gameplay. It was also commercially successful, establishing the Genesis as a key player in the 16-bit era and allowing it to compete with Nintendo and their Super Nintendo Entertainment System console. The game has been ported a number of times, and inspired several clones, a successful franchise, and adaptations into other media.

It's actually a Chinese bootleg version with some improvements (new music, pallete selection is changed a little). Unfortunately, the physics in the game are very uncomfortable, Sonic feels much heavier than in the original.

My Sega Saturn has been sitting in storage for about a year. When I plugged it up, I heard a pop & immediately unplugged it. when I opened it up, one of the capacitors on the power supply blew. The biggest one close to the plug input. I'm waiting on the part. When I get it I'll be recapping it. Hopefully I'll be able to get footage again soon. I tried the ISO on my emulator & it was choppy. So I didn't include it. :(

So it's finally happened - a Sonic episode!
Wouldn't mind playing that arcade version for the extra time challenge.
There was a mobile version of this game as well. I played it back in 2007 on my T-Mobile sidekick slide. It was a lot like the Genesis version except only 3 stages long to complete it.
I remember always hearing the sound being distorted at the beginning of Green Hill Zone Act 1 whenever I played Sonic 1 in the PS2 version of Sonic Mega Collection Plus. Maybe it happened because the manual for the game mentioned that there would be some graphical glitches in the software’s versions of the games.

I never seen any Sonic arcades growing up in the 90s, this must be one of those MAME rom emulated variants. You should do a "Let's Compare (Virtua Fighter)" and compare the Virtua Fighter game from the Arcade, Saturn, 32X, and the PC.

The orignal SG version reminds me of that earrapy Sanic theme.
I didn't know this was an arcade game too. I first played Sonic on a Genesis shortly after its release in the 90's. Then played the other three classic Sonic games on Genesis then didn't play any Sonic games until Sonic Ultimate Genesis collection came out for PS3 then i got a few Sonic games for a Genesis i picked up at a garage sale for super cheap. Last time i played Sonic was on my android phone. I want to get Sonic Mania now that looks like a great throw back to the original 3 Sonic games on Genesis.

Just to ad a note that the Christains Whitehead version of Sonic the Hedgehog was built from the ground up using a fan made engine.
I'm surprised that the DS and 3DS versions aren't here, although I suppose there'd be no way to emulate the 3D effect of the latter. The iOS/Android version was built on a different engine so that would have been neat to compare, too. Overall enjoyable, though! I had forgot there was technically an arcade version! And that NES version has better sprites for Sonic than any version I'd seen before.
I hadn't any knowledge of microcomputers and atari versions.
