Thank you so much great video and very good information. I have a big leaf hydrangea, its over twenty years old. I get all colors on mine. White, green, purple, blue and pink. I dont do any trimming til spring. I do it very carefully. First year i had it, i trimmed it all the way back to the ground. Wrong thing to do. Love all your video's ❤

Sounds like a beautiful hydrangea… and you’ve figured out exactly how it likes to be trimmed.

Put some chicken wire around your macrophylla in the winter and stuff it with leaves or straw to cover it completely and remove it in may or when youre past the fear of frost. They tend to have their flower buds killed off by winter/spring frosts.

This was clear simple to understand. I see I have the macophage kind. Enjoyed the story about hacking the phone line. I tend to hurt myself...I drilled my thumb knuckle and weed wacked my ankle. so I can relate to your story. The joys of diy-fers😊

I have a big patch of common old fashioned hydrangeas. When I prune them hard to thicken the patch and get more blooms I had no blooms that next summer. You never said that on any varieties. Is it normal to loose a season of blooms?I am worried about trimming any more than taking off the flowers.

@michelemarble6799 At minute 10:35 I talk about the do-not-trim varieties. I’d say you either have one of those varieties or a snowball viburnum (which is often mistaken for a hydrangea)- those kind can usually only be trimmed right after they bloom… otherwise you’ll be trimming off blooms.

My hydrangeas don't bloom. How do I get them to bloom? It's been like three or four years.

What type are they? Pruning certain types at the wrong time can be a problem - late frost can hurt those same varieties. Otherwise, proper light and fertilizing can be factors that affect blooms.
