As I understand it, "industry plant" is a derogatory term that refers to a "newly discovered, hot artist" that appears from out of the underground/indie scene but is, in actuality, a person or group with connections to the powers that be in the music industry. These connections are downplayed or actively hidden with respect to this new artist in the hopes of making them seem more "authentic."

Nobody in the history of music ever made it on the radio or nowadays big even know social media doesn't make it without connections. People love to romanticize the fantasy of the loner musician magically blowing up while tucked away in their room, but the fact of the matter is that it takes a lot of hustling and marketing savvy to get your work onto a big enough platform to start profiting from it. Everybody has an agent, sorry to spoil the illusion, kids.

I thought an “industry plant” was a super specific thing - Like, the formation of Peter, Paul & Mary was literally a producer thinking “Anti-war folk music is really taking off... Let’s get in on this!” and then he auditioned people to form a specific group that he, the industry insider, planned from the start. There’s also an element of deception there since, to the public, they seemed indie. Disney stars are really different, imo... but there’s no Wikipedia page for the term so I have no idea if others think it means the same thing I do lol.

  • @kedsarama

I always thought the same thing. Drake at this point technically is an industry plant by that definition although i do not think he got his start in music being the same person he is today. that dude has people doing everything for him, he just has to get on a mic and sing whatever he was scripted to do.

Most folks commenting that “classical musicians just perform other peoples music” are really exposing how ignorant they are. In the classical world the composer is more akin to a screenwriter/director and the musicians are the actors that bring it to life. A conductor in a way is a bit more like a cinematographer/co-director. You wouldn’t scoff at Daniel day-Lewis for acting in someone else’s movie lol. It’s a collaborative effort. I don’t know where this take on classical musicians came from recently but holy hell is it dumb.

It's probably the same kind of people who dismiss pop singers who don't write their own songs. It's really quite a narrow perspective when you consider that there are a lot of styles of music (traditional music, musical theatre) in which musicians as a rule don't compose.

@@DavidSmyth666 I wont lie, I get sad when I love an artist and then find out that they dont produce or write their own songs. Its disappointing to me, but it doesnt make me like the music any less. I also don't talk about the artist in a different way after finding out. Production is one thing. But writing, I at least want to see them as co writers. I think its because I put a lot of stock into personal meaning and sentimentality. It can make the music lose some of its charm, or meaning. I understand that artists sometimes dont write their music, but feed a writer a story, for them to craft a song or lyrics out of.

I've listened to Metallica's first three albums (Don't like Kill 'Em All, it just sounds like stupid ADHD shit, from what I can remember. Ride the Lightning is my favourite, as it has the best sound fidelity, and is the shortest. Master of Puppets was decent) and Rust in Peace. (Megadeth) I have, however, listened to a few "proto-thrash" songs. (Supernaut and Symptom of the Universe, by Black Sabbath + Breadfan and Crash Course in Brain Surgery, by Budgie. Symptom of the Universe is the best of the four, and I'd highly recommend listening to it)

Bach’s cello suites are some of the most well known cello pieces, and there’s no single agreed upon way of how to play them. Once I got to college and studied the history of the period and Bach’s life, and then took lessons with a cello PhD, I fully realized how cool and fun it is to interpret this really old music and it’s sort of an insult to just call it a “cover”, especially if you’re that good because then you can write and sell your own version of it.

As a self-described metalhead, I can confirm that there are certainly a fair share of elitist dickheads in the metal community. I've had the joy of knowing a few personally. In my experience, I think it comes from the fact that the genre tends to attract people who were outcasts growing up and there's a certain amount of resentment there that they then translate into resentment towards other more "popular" or "mainstream" genres of music. I was certainly like that for a little while prior to some introspection which led me to open up to other genres and I now proudly have a large eclectic range of music I enjoy.

Also, if you like music written for orchestra, from "classic" classic to every modern iteration of that, it is just great to be able to go see some favourite concert live, played to the very best of human skill. I had the luck of being taken to a concert for the first time back in school. It was a "modern" set, so I was introduced to Prokofiev's "Peter and the wolf" live when I was like 12. That truly changed me a bit. I'll be always grateful for those who choose to keep this format of music alive.

“Industry plant” means someone they try to pass off as an independent artist. Usually in hip hop. That aside, corporate, major label music at this point is purely a manufactured product, like Cheetos. It has nothing to do with art. It has almost nothing to do with music. They pick someone they think is marketable, usually with pre-existing fame (like “Bhad Babie” from Dr. Phil). They barely need to be able to sing or rap. Autotune takes care of that. They have pre-existing teams of producers and songwriters, and they’ll have ten or more on one track, manufacturing what they hope will be a pop hit, by committee. It is the most purely cynical process imaginable. Some may say, “it’s always been that way”. Not true. There has always been pop music. But the window for experimentation has narrowed to nothing. Back in the 70s, the major labels would sign rock bands, and let them develop, writing their own songs, for two or three albums without producing hardly any sales. They’d get tour support, studio time, everything. Now, there are no artists at the major labels. There are no musicians. There are only jingle writers and celebrities (or would be celebrities). The celebrity is the product spokesperson, the music is the jingle. And that’s it. Absolutely nothing more. Increasingly, they’re just making really obvious copies of existing songs (Olivia Rodrigo has a Paramore ripoff), or sampling existing songs. It’s the same thing with Hollywood, trying to cash in on “Fast & Furious 27”, or “Star Wars Episode 90: You Will Eat This Dog Food And Like It”. Basically, anybody who listens to anything put out by a major label at this point has zero taste in music, only cares about trends and clout, and likes being a sucker.

They're Disney backed, which personally feels more appropriate than conflating them into the term for industry plants. Industry plants have already been described in the other comments better, but to recap, they're basically artists whose info is being covered up to be under the pretense of being an indie artist when they have actually been on the hands of big influential members of the entertainment industry. Olivia Rodrigo and the many other Disney artists that came before her had the pattern where people knew they came from Disney TV shows originally already and then were made to become pop stars. To the best of my knowledge there wasn't any effort from Disney to hide those facts, so they were basically given a great amount of backing to be part of the pop music scene, not be planted insincerely into the indie scene.

Yungblud literally was on a Disney show for basically half of a season, quit because he didn't enjoy it, and wanted to have a proper music career, went out and started playing to tiny crowds in normal sized pubs, working his way up. Just having "been" on a Disney show isn't really an easy ticket to stardom. Even now you might think he is hugely popular but he's playing 2k seaters at best in the US, and he barely played a 5k gig in the UK, and isn't a top line festival act, He's only 2nd line at Reading because the third line and 4th line are sort of an "everybody else" category, although before the pandemic, Denzel Curry was billed above him at Coachella and now he is billed above Denzel, but it also is in the UK and he has had a #1 album in the UK, so that probably helped him out there. But it was through actual touring his ass off, not the way some ex-Disney people sort of get handed shit.

My question in these debates is always why does it matter in the first place whether or not an artist is an industry plant? Like even if an artist does check off all the boxes of being an "industry plant", if they're talented and make good music then shouldn't that be the only thing that matters? Why does where and how they became successful have to have anything to with whether or not they're good?

  • @jackie6467

i think being an industry plant matters a lot when you’re defining an industry plant as an artist who markets themself as having a different background than they actually do and is trying to hide they way they were chosen by the industry to be the next big hit. one famous industry plant example is how elvis was a pretty unsuccessful ballad singer but producers eventually realized that he “sounded black” when singing african american rock n roll and blues, which was gaining popularity but most white americans were avoiding it as not to idolize black singers, so they chose to make elvis a star in order to make black music palatable to a white audience. and in music genres where authenticity and intimate personal experiences are just a part of the songs and culture attached to them, it can damage the experience of listening to those artists. but disney stars going on to make music without hiding their disney past? not a problem, and not industry plants anyways.

If someone goes to Harvard they go their to build a network of connections so they get a massive headstart that the average person will never have, why would you expect someone to take the hardest road there is and accept no help when they can take the best path that leads to the most success it makes no sense, and in the ends its all based on if people like their music or not, if their music is shit and no one likes it then they wont be famous, the idea of an industry plant is fake.

I remember when The Alchemist was in that loosely-Soul Assassins affiliated teen-hop duo Tha Whooliganz. The other guy was James Caan's son. Not sure if it was Scott. Anyway they had like one hit and I can't remember the name of it. The Alchesmist's beats are dope though

There's also been plenty examples of Disney stars whose pop careers never worked out with the same help and connections. Miley Selena Demi were all around the same time, but there have been many Disney stars where that was not their story: Bridgit Mendler, Bella Thorne, Zendaya (yes they still acted, but music careers failed) and probably a bunch more I don't know. Sabrina carpenter is doing okay, but it's not like she would have been booked on SNL for her debut album right away and didn't instantly became a household name
