That 2011 year when Novak started beating Roger and Rafa regularly was truly one of the most surprising things ever. He got that first GS at the Aus Open a few years prior but then had matches like the one at Wimbledon against Roddick where he completely ran out of gas by 4th set. Once he got his diet figured out and discovered the workout routine that worked for him, he exploded.

He may not have been as beloved or appreciated as the other two during the careers. But in 20 years, he will be even more immortalized and iconic when this hateful era dies down, and people realize what he's done. Especially through how he was treated as he chased down the media darlings and stood his ground. They wanted to destroy him, and ultimately it will backfire and is gonna grow into Ali status as time goes. He's the only athlete I root for since I left my youth. I never hated him, he just wasn't my cup of tea at first when I was younger, but he's the real one who's kept his dignity when most would cry racism, bigotry or demand people see them as a victim of hatred which he's experienced, even before covid drama. From the beginning because he's believed in himself, and didn't bow to Roger and Rafael that people hated and wanted him to be submissive. Yet he talks respectfully about them, while they seem annoyed paying respect back to him and spiteful.

You've already set limits within your own comment. For the mind, it's an exit point when things look bleak. People outside of tennis or even sports in general have said similar things. Successful people. So much of everything is in the mind. Evander Holyfield, one of the great boxers of all time, said most of boxing is in the mind. Now many looking for exit points will prefer to focus on the fact that you can have all the mental belief in the world but if you're 5 foot and naturally 100lb you're not going to be a heavyweight champion boxer. It's much better to take it as understanding the importance of the mind. And how it can be the deciding the factor, especially at higher levels. However, an element of what you're saying is true, but it doesn't disprove what he's saying. Belief won't result in you being a champion by itself. But that's not the point. Not setting limits, the person who does this the most, provided they have a sufficient toolbox (genetics, strengths etc for a given discipline) and the work ethic to realise their potential, which includes how they approach building their skillset (and let's be honest, a bit of luck as well with timing, like meeting the right people at the right time etc), is giving themselves the best chances to realise their potential. When you're talking elite top of the world athletes in a given sport, belief, not setting limits, starting way back ideally, can be the biggest difference. It starts right at the beginning though. If you want to be a car designer, but you decide before you even try that you can't do it, you won't ever do it. Like you've just ensured it won't. Same goes for exiting when the going gets tough. Most people quit, early. If you don't believe you can beat Djokovic in a grand slam final, you won't. But if you believe it, if you build your game and study Djokovic, if you identify patterns you can use to your advantage, if you believe when you're on court with him that you can and should beat him, and you actually have a toolbox that complies enough with your goals, you've at least given yourself a chance. Holyfield, who fought above his natural weight as well and succeeded, said the difference between winning and losing is when pressure hits. Again, you can focus on a big tall experienced fighter Vs a small inexperienced one, and the difference isn't when pressure hits. It's level and size. But he's meaning when the work has been put in and you can both pressure each other, the mind can be the deciding factor. In tennis, a good recent high profile example would be the Wimbledon 2019 final. Federer was the better player that day. But Djokovic was stronger between the ears. That and a little luck at the right time and the match went to Djokovic. It's not the first time he's done it either, even against Federer. In fairness, it wasn't prime Federer etc etc, but that's not my point. It was a high level contest and highlights perhaps Djokovics greatest strength. And its played a huge role in his career, where he's been able to steal victories in big matches at times when he wasn't the best player that day. And that's something most of the tour isn't great at. It happens to be something the big 3 are the best at. It's not a coincidence. It's worth noting that as talented as they are, they haven't been the only mega talents during their years.

@@sjjapp i don't disagree with most of what you said. I do think it makes a bigger difference the closer 2 people are in level. Djokovic Wimby 2019 had a foundation of doing the same twice vs Fed earlier and that can be traced back to his upbringing in war torn Serbia (he himself says this). Of course you can't do much in life without hope and belief. My point was more about confidence doesn't just emerge out of nowhere. It's usually a consequence of something bigger and people are too quick to jump on the pedal of "if you didn't win it's probably cuz you didn't believe in yourself, just believe in yourself"

@@parthshrivastava2548you're right, confidence doesn't appear out of nowhere. It takes effort. A ton of effort. A near constant one as well. Life is hard. It's not a Disney movie. It's kind of what Rocky said in one of the later movies, think it was Rocky Balboa, the last one, that life is going to knock you down, nobody hits harder than life, and the people that win get back up and keep moving forward, that it's not always how hard you hit but how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. And it's a movie yes, but he's right. Someone like Djokovic is an example of that since we're already talking about him. You're not taking punches to the head in tennis, and hopefully in life unless it's during training and sanctioned fights in a combat sport, but life hits you in other ways. Be it on the tennis court, at home, in your career or whatever else. Point is confidence is trainable. It's a perspective. Self belief as well. Same with setting fewer limits. It's trainable in both directions though. And it's easier to train it to be worse. And that's what makes people like Djokovic and Nadal etc so incredible in my mind. Their abilities and success go beyond how they swing a racket. The level of belief and mental strength these guys have has stolen them many matches over the years. And it has brought them back after less than ideal moments as well.

Dominated everyone besides Novak and even Rafa after age 35 beat him like 10 times in a row after changing his backhand. Nole is my hands down favorite player bc his character and convictions with not bowing down to global Covid tyranny and willingly being enemy #1, but roger is who I enjoy watching his particular game the most. It’s just art and amazing but if I need motivation I’m watching Nole screw the art I need his animal energy lol
