I don't think you have to choose one or the other. We all have our areas of focus. The beauty of the internet is so many resources are now at your fingertips and you can immerse yourself in all of it :)

Q: You gave your opinion of some online Tai Chi teachers in a video a while back - mostly that they weren't doing Tai Chi. What is your opinion of Adam Mizner's Tai Chi?

I don't hate on Adam Mizner. From what I've seen and heard him talk about, I think he has genuine skills and a deep understanding. However, I don't disagree with his critics in that his business model is built around a cult guru model. Chris Wang over at Triesence Martial Arts channel has a really great video breaking down how masters are able to do seemingly magical things with their qi power when they have an adoring compliant partner. It's not fake, but it's also not real. When you're compliant, your own mind allows you to be led. I can't remember which video it was though. It was an older one when he talked about his own Wu Xin Tong Bei teacher in Beijing. It's popular to bash Adam Mizner and many of my internal martial arts friends are itching to touch hands with him. But I think they're also a little bit jealous of how big he has become.

@@AipingTaiChi OK, thank you very much for that answer. It doesn't actually look like fakery/play-acting to me in fact either, but I suspect that, as with many marital arts, adopting certain "correct" habits e.g. postural traits, a student can become more vulnerable to the techniques the teacher is using on them. e.g. some of the extreme jumping and hopping one sees.

@@robertbrown1778 yes, you often hear that Adam Mizner picks and chooses who he will work with and will only work with those who are willing and open to be controlled by him. When I was 17 I had an incredulous experience with a Qigong master in Shanghai. This Master was revered and my body was weak and already riddled with a ton of injuries from sports that I really really wanted to be healed. It was like I surrendered control of my own body and he took it over with his qi. I hadn't started my martial arts training yet and I didn't understand what happened. I thought this Qigong master was a sorcerer. A few months later I started college and one of the freshman orientation events was a hypnotist. My friend (who is now my husband) was chosen as a volunteer. The hypnotist got him to think his shirt was always on backwards and he kept turning his shirt around. My husband insists it wasn't fake, he really thought his shirt was on backwards. Before he selected his volunteers, the hypnotist put the whole audience through some tests. It was from how they responded in the tests that he could see how easily they could be hypnotized. Which really just means how easily they can get their minds influenced by suggestion. I realized that was probably what I was experiencing with the Qigong master as well. I was so open to him and that made me really easy to be influenced by suggestion. I think that's also what goes into these experiences with Tai Chi masters that seem to be able to make people become jumping beans with a little pinky poke.

@@AipingTaiChi I guess it's the human condition that sometimes we really need help so we're open to manipulation e.g. miracle cures. The hypnotism angle is interesting. Hadn't really thought of that - some hypnotists will say that it's not really that the subject is in a special state of mind or the hypnotist has a special power over them, but just that we all accept a particular narrative/version of reality all the time. And some people can be directed quite easily to another. There are some tricks e.g basically, that they confuse the person momentarily and while their brain is frozen not knowing what to do, the hypnotist provides instructions that their brain gratefully accepts and follows along with. Before long they're believing a different version of reality.
