Tai Chi Repulsing The Monkey Feet

In our 8/30/22 Yang Style Tai Chi class we went over the foot positioning for Repulsing the Monkey. This is a video clip from our class and shows you what the viewing experience is when you join our classes online. Join us: aipingtaichi.com.
Let's admit it, no one likes Zoom class, especially Tai Chi Zoom classes. I don't like them either. Tai Chi Zoom classes are something you HAVE to take, not something you WANT to take. This is why I've spent 3 years thinking about how to provide a Zoom class experience that I would want to take as a Tai Chi student. We installed an AV system that brings remote learners into our classes so they can be a part of our group class energy but also gives them the best seats in the house rather than feeling they got the bench seats. Here's a taste of what an online class with us is like.

This was SO helpful for my practice! Thank you Shirley for this detailed lesson!! I find myself falling into my backwards step at times, and I'll keep this lesson in mind from now on. 😁

Good lessons stem from good questions so thank you for asking such a good question last night!

It's interesting this topic of angles. I must say, you're attention to detail and clear explanations combined with excellent demonstrations is very professional and helpful for anyone learning this particular Tai Chi form. Personally, I practise with the feet in parallel when doing "repulse monkey" movements. The parallel step in this part of the form is a specific feature of Cheng Man-Ch'ing's way of teaching, as is the shoulder width distance between the feet. I've practised both ways, but I keep returning to the parallel step way of doing this. I'm not saying one is wrong and the other is right, just that there are sometimes slightly different ways to do some, most or all postures in ways that equally may have valid reasons for doing so.

Thank you 🙏❤ Yes, you make such a great point. All the foot positions and hand positions in the different forms all have to be understood in context of the particular application and direction the opponent is relative to you that the master had in mind when he choreographed the form. In my class this week I went over Grasping the Sparrow's Tail with feet shoulder width apart and toes pointing straight forward, parallel to each other and then in bow stance with back foot turned out to 45 degrees so my students could understand the greater range of motion you gain when you are in bow stance and how your body will naturally turn more which will also naturally bring your arms further out to the side. The changes in the upper body are all because of the angle of the foot.

Can I please ask a question about your footwear? What kind of shoe do you wear in this video, and can you recommend a good shoe for me please?

I wear a pair of Tai Chi shoes that I used to get straight from a factory in China that makes martial art supplies. These are the only shoes that I liked and would put my logo on. They're genuine leather with a flat wide bottom and were very close in design to a barefoot shoe with a wide toe box. However the factory changed their design and now make the toe box too narrow so I no longer distribute them. I haven't found another pair of Tai Chi shoes I can endorse. I've been recommending my students to get barefoot shoes like Vivobarefoot or Xero for their Tai Chi practice.
