I can't speak for everyone, but as for me (and my boys as well), they understand emotions of a musical piece MUCH better after hours of practice. And It's when all the notes have been learned and become an afterthought that I(we) can really enjoy the emotional expression of all of the dynamics, glissandos, changes of scales, interrupted cadences, chromatic climbs and falls, and just plain ol' gentle romantic melody over warm harmonic chords. This is my individual experience. I understand that it may not be this way for everyone and I am far from a pro musician. For all I know, his facial expressions truly are rehearsed and in his head he's thinking about what's for dinner and whether his rent is due or not.
