I remember being at uni and doing these really extensive lesson plans on their pro forma that they expected us to fill out for every lesson.. and when you're teaching 2 or 3 lessons a day on placement, it just became far too much! The lecturers were even saying to us that it shouldn't take us longer than 15 minutes to fill it out but we were all spending at least an hour on each one to make sure everything was covered and that it would meet the criteria for when they were looked at and critiqued.. it just didn't reflect real teaching practice at all

The hard part of lesson planning is there is so many good resources available now it’s sometimes difficult to pick just one or two things you want to use. Great tips in the video, happily subscribed and look forward to watching more.

Hi Katie! I'm a long time subscriber to For Teachers. I am have first finished my first week of my second year placement on a degree route to QTS. Was just having a coffee before I got started for today (planning a Year 2 lesson on shapes) and this was just what I needed to hear. Whenever I get stressed from planning I always tell myself it will get easier and quicker the more I do it. I must remember to keep everything I plan even if I feel like the lesson was rubbish because I can always edit it and build upon it. Thanks for all you do!

Another useful video, and very reassuring as I sit down on Sunday morning to finish my weekly planning. I've been subscribed since my wobbly teacher trainee year, through NQT and now RQT and your videos continue to be a source of help and inspiration. I know you've touched on the subject before, but as it continues to be relevant would you consider speaking more on managing workload and teacher well-being? With a new OFSTED framework and what feels like the ensuing chaotic rush to meet these goals I find I'm really exhausted at the moment. Thank you again, and I hope you're enjoying your own class! 💛

I am new to this teaching major! Anyway, I did my first lesson plan yesterday for only an hours worth of teaching! It has taken me three days and I still haven't gotten it! It took me a moment to figure out the Maryland state department of education standards list. Also, writing a learning objective, outcome and goals while using Bloom's taxonomy correctly! I found out some words are not usable even if they're on the list. Regardless, I enjoyed your video and I thank you for your advice! Keep shining bright light! Amen!

Hi Katie! This video has been a god-send today! My sister and I were discussing the length of time it takes to lesson plan this week (she’s quite quick at it - doing her teacher training through a degree whereas I take so long - doing my teacher training through a SCITT course). I would love to win your book as I truly think it will help me heading into my final block placement in a couple of months ahead of, hopefully, a job in September!!! Also, I’m not sure if others would like this, but I would love to see your actual process when planning a lesson (kind of like a blog of how you plan a lesson... does this make sense?!). Anyway, I hope you have a fabulous week and, as always, thank you for another fab video 😍

Hope the SCITT course is the one for you - let me know if you have any questions along the way! 🥳🥳

Plato understood the aim of education to teach the learner how to learn. Chomsky states education should foster curiosity in the learner, whilst equipping them to challenge information sources and authority. Potential trainee teacher. A free guide would be nice.. 😄

Thanks for the video lovely. Really put my mind at rest, I've seen on placements teachers who dont plan and teachers who as you said plan reems and reems, it seems I need to find my own niche. Happy birthday for valentine's day it's also my husbands birthday x

Definitely strive to find something that works for you. I remember old colleagues of mine bragging about how long their plans were and how they spent hours on them - I never felt envious of that life 😂 and happy birthday to your husband too!! Thanks for taking time to share a comment here too. It really helps the channel! X

Really helpful video thank you. I was wondering if you knew any teacher's who were dyslexic and if you could get them to make a video with you talking about how they overcome this challenge.

I do know dyslexic teachers. I’m not sure I could persuade them to film (people get very shy about videos) but I can try asking, right? 😇 Great teachers can be dyslexic too for sure!

I'm in college right now for elementary education, and these lesson plans are killing me. I'm almost at the point that I want to pursue a different field. I spend hours on each lesson plan to hit all the points they require on the plans and make them "detailed enough for a sub to pick up the plan and teach from it." There's not enough hours in the day for this. I'm glad I found your video and I'm going you are right.

Same. When I started my elementary education degree I would spend 2+ hours on a 30 min lesson. I almost quit too. I just started my certification practicum and have gotten much faster, but it is still brutal meeting these strict requirements. Hang in there, once you are a teacher you will have autonomy and it will be great!
