mate he is not the type of person to have an ego. Standard british cycling rules, usually at the start of the race they will say no language as it can damage the publics view of us especially in a town centre crit. He did it by the book.

@@cornishalps9870 well, he wasnt wearing hi vis or indeed the colours of his colleagues. He stood in the middle of the road in a dangerous position. Reporting the swearing may have been 'by the book' - but were his other actions?

He's the one who should be disciplined.

That guy should know better, and it proves the elitism of British Cycling when they complain that you swore at an official, who was not dressed as an official, and they thought they could discipline you even though you had video evidence. Glad you made this available for the public to see.

The official is wearing a UCI uniform, the dark blue top and bright beige trousers are very different to the BC uniform but well known. Regardless it's inexplicable what the man was doing in the road.

​@@ColinOlden1 but if an official is stepping out he should have some high vi's on his upper body, if British cycling think those colours are suitable they are very nieve indeed. I think a Norwegian cyclist unfortunatly died recently in a race, cycling has a lot of dangers and every governing body upto and including the uni should do evertpything fees able to limit any risks to cyclists.

@@thorgrimb2416 Yes I agree totally, I work in mountain bike racing at national and international level as a race director ( I never work at road races) . At national level it has been common for the officials to not wear any marking other than their uniform but at World cup level all the officials wear bibs which clearly mark who people are. It is very strange indeed that this commissaire is out in the course but then compared to mountain biking road racing is just strange altogether.

@@ColinOlden1 What springs to mind is that outfit could easily be what any well-dressed spectator might wear. May be natty for other situations but not when trying to officiate roadside.

Shouting at someone was the correct response. We use expletives to drive the message so although in hindsight you wished you hadn't it is quite natural and normal.

The fact that he is 'high up' in British Cycling should be enough to tell all.

He had absolutely ZERO reason to be in the middle of the road! Official or not. Cursing at someone who can potentially cause serious injury, is not something you should have to apologize for. Good thing you had your camera on.

In the heat of the moment and the ‘official’ being in a position that could have caused a nasty accident I’m not surprised you swore at him. He’s the idiot in this situation and needs to apologize to you.

I believe your instruction to the person on the course was perfectly justified as well as your quick identification given how little time there was to react.

That is very unfair- why he thought he should step out into the road to do that is beyond me. Having raced Ilkley myself, you still go very fast up that hill and there’s actually a decent risk of crashing on it due to riders fatiguing while others are attacking- let alone when someone is standing on the circuit itself! If the commissaries want to communicate with a rider, they ought to use a whiteboard.

I agree with you completely. He should not have been there and risked causing an accident and you were justified in shouting at him to get out the way. You should put a counter complaint in for him.

What was he thinking!!!. Put in a counter claim he could have been any nutter!!!

Having officiated races myself, I would have seen this as a learning moment for the commissar. First lesson is obviously that it should be 100% clear that he is a race official. Second is that instead of making the race safer stepping out like that made the race less safe. As for the swearing, that's a bit difficult to judge, I have zero problems with the swearing in and by itself, and I always keep in mind that an athlete pumped up on adrenaline is a different beast than their regular being. My considerations would be if they were undermining the respect for the race rules and/or officials. Keeping in mind that in a situation with 2 people involved, there is usually 3 truths to it. Two subjective and one objective. The commissar may have seen things very differently. This may have been a case where he didn't realize he was causing the problem, and it seems reasonable for this to go away.

People will swear in life-threaning situations, which is what this idiot official created. He could easily have caused a collision with his behaviour. When you have 1-2 seconds to instruct someone to get out of the way, aggressive tones and profanity can help accelerate that.

If you look to the right, behind the official, there is a dog on a leash, and swearing in front of the dog can harm its feelings. The dog might need counseling after this ordeal. You should have said "Hello sir thank you for standing in the road with your whistle in a very dangerous manner, can you please just step back up onto the curb and off the course! And please sir when you step back do not step on the Dog right behind you." That is the way you go about these things, not swearing!

You are 100% right (don't worry about the swearing, it's impossible to be polite, when faced with a complete W8nk3R standing directly in front of you), the officials in cycling these days are as clueless as our politicians. I've always thought the beige uci trousers very suspect indeed!

Good Christ why oh why do some folks think its in any way acceptable to have their officials off the lead at a crit ?

I know wearing a high-viz tabard would have spoilt his 'gentleman at Henley Regatta' vibes, but he was clearly in the wrong. Also, considering the mental and physical stress you were under, it's absolutely no wonder you swore (I've heard much worse coming out the mouths of children on public transport too). Aside from the drama, it's a fantastic video and really captures the chaos of a race!

Commissaires are trained officials who volunteer their time to ensure cycling competition is safe and fair. Commissaires are present in all levels of racing and operate in all racing disciplines . This one needs to go back to school then !

It's nice that you apologized for your profanity. We must be professional. He obviously shouldn't have been in the road. He could have caused a crash and or injuries to the riders. He should be disciplined. No, you shouldn't be banned. The officials ALL should have some type of clothing that identifies them as officials. They should also consider using some type of flags to communicate with the riders without getting on the road way. Safety first for all involved.

What's a few choice words in the heat of the moment when facing danger? You could have broke bones there in a fall or swerved into the crowd. He put you in a dangerous position through his own actions. That he is an official is crazy. That he is high up an abused his power to discipline you is nuts. It is him who clearly needs to be disciplined. Thanks for shaming them with this video. Will they take action - as a result of the publicity - or are they banding round his guy bc is high up and they are his friends?

Very dangerous, he should not have been in the road. The video is great though! Really captures the intensity of bike racing! Shows how there is little to no room for error in any way. Regardless of how you placed with the other riders, I think you rode great!

I have never been even a thousandth of the cyclists you guys are, but, I am a fan of cycling, I love watching the Grand Tours and my wife and neighbours know when their is a mountain stage from the profanities that are directed at the numpties who choke the roads. You stand at the side of the road and cheer on your favourite, hopefully at the front, and don't hinder them. The official should a) have had a hi-vis on and b) had a flag, like the Marshall in motor racing, I would suggest blue, to signal "You are about to be lapped, move to the slower part of the route".

No apologies needed on your part: it’s a race, adrenaline is running high, competition is intense and feelings are running high and so it’s no place for anyone - especially not a commissaire - to be breaking with safety procedures in such a flagrant way. He’s representing a serious and immediate risk to everyone around you on the road and it was absolutely right to tell him in no uncertain terms to remember the danger he presented and to get back behind barriers or out of the way. Nobody but him will have had their feelings hurt: anyone there with kids will understand the conditions you’re racing under.

Good to see you weren't put off by the Dacre road race. You pick the hilly ones!

Besides the swearing, which to be honest is understandable considering the effort and ambiguous intention of the 'spectator ', you hadn't done anything wrong. He was not in any recognisable kit to id as an official. He stepped into path of the athletes. His complaint is unreasonable he should be disciplined and made to apologise for his error. In my youth racing crits I had never experienced this but other pompous behavior abound. What are the current official rules for lap norification. I mean, the motorbike passing is a good enough clue isn't it. I hope you at least get a chance to have your say. Don't accept any strikes against you. Excellent racing and course btw.

As someone who has never raced in a Crit, I'm even less inclined yo give it a try now that I've seen what kind of attitude some people in the BC office think is appropriate! That guy should not have been in the road during the race, I'm not sure I'd be able to accept their warning politely

If it was necessary for a race official to step into the road in front of an approaching pack of riders (and thats a mighty big "if" in my opinion), then he should definitely have been wearing an official hi viz jacket or tabard. Otherwise, he just looks like a crazy member of the public. And therefore, in the circumstances, I completely understand why you reacted as you did.

That was odd. As you said, you'd expect an official to be easily identifiable as such. Even then, you wouldn't expect to see them doing something like that. Just out of interest, what camera are you using - very clear footage.

Aren't battery-powered loud hailers available in the UK? Using one of those, he should have stood on the curb and communicated with the riders safely from there. Perhaps he has never raced, at least not on a criterium course like this?

BC Commissaire and race organiser here. Matey boy should not be in the road. Absolute no no. He needs to sort it out with you and put a few quid into the charity jar.

HE is the one who needs to be disciplined!! If he is an official he should know better than to stand in the middle of the road.

That official is always at ilkley seen him the past 2 years. He was probably one who allowed camera use as well.

In the US it is normal for the official to step out into the road a bit to get the attention of the riders when sharing a message. That said, he should have been looking at the riders coming towards him more and should have been moving back off the road earlier

Let’s hope the organisers watch it and learn. I rode in RideLondon this year and my only real criticism was the poor marshalling. Many took no notice of the riders, they didn’t get upstream of the numerous crashes to warn riders and several just waved their yellow flags continually to show how much fun they were having. The BC rules and regulations include hundreds of pages of onerous regulations regarding the riders but say nothing about how the officials should behave or how they should be identified on the circuit.

Holy cow, man, expend some serious watts at the front end or your entire race is going to be looking at all the other riders' backsides, as they steadily recede up the road.

The lesson here is to always wear a camera, this man deserved a few harsh words. He knew he was in the wrong and was likely embarrassed or had his fragile feelings hurt when the rider decided to be down to earth with him, hence the complaint..rider didn’t scream it at the top of his lungs, nor were there very many people within earshot. Complaint should be tossed entirely. The officials actions were unsafe, no regard for his own nor rider safety. Stay out of the road. Furthermore as mentioned, he looks nothing like any of the other officials. I would have assumed him to be a spectator or coach and likely would have done the same thing. Only person who should be disciplined is the man who should most definitely know better than to step out into the middle of the fking road during a race..unmarked.

Swearing is so naughty, I got sacked for it a month ago. Teaching cycling and as a driver cut up one of my riders I called him a bell end. But I am in the wrong. I also apologised. The world today is just crazy.

You dont see the officials walk on the track in a formula 1 race!

It's been years but stuff like this(the officials in the US) and other riders attitudes got me to stop racing(I did enjoy it) and now just enjoy riding. Before one race we had been told we could use the entire road width for the sprint after the last turn, I jumped out of the turn past the motorcycle who then flagged me out of the race. The winner (I would have been caught by most but might have placed) gave me his prize as it was a membership to a Gym he could not use. Over the top officials mess it up for everyone.

These kinds of false accusers always do this, and members of institutions go along with it because they are lazy. Literally no rational person would think his allegation makes any sense. This random cyclist in the race decided to take a break from the race he was in to berate you personally for no reason at all?? Makes total sense, dude.

Certainly under the effect of adrenaline I would have done the same, but it was a mistake to swear in public, even if the official created this situation by making two mistakes: he did not wear the appropriate uniform, potentially creating other situations for other supporters who would have followed his example, and you are not allowed to stand on the race track, especially on the sprint when any mistake can be fatal!

Long time since i raced so i'm not familiar with the current rules, but i thought it would be the norm to retire if you'd been lapped. If the riders don't know this at the start of a race, it's hardly appropriate to try to relay the info to them in the way the race official did.

He overstepped. I´m all about truth to power, especially here in the U.S. right now, and rank doesn´t preclude loss of perspective with implied deference. In other words: yep. Officials can make oopses. Incidentally, a little curious about a person in the video in the U.K. with a U.S. flag on the shirt. I know in the '80s, kids wore flags from all kinds of countries on their backpacks, especially the U.K. I noticed, I guess.

great filming, . I have heard plenty of swearing and forceful suggestions in all sports, notably football that doesn't even get a yellow card. What on earth is going on here is ridiculous,and it looks to me like that official needs to have a closer look taken at his own reckless and dangerous actions, especially as he was just dressed like a passer by. its not even like you swore at someone you thought was a race official, he could just have easily been some drunk passer by interfering with the race and actually needed some forceful language to get his attention and get him away both for the riders and pedestrians safety, and also his own. well done taking some fast positive action for everyone's benefit.

It's hard not to swear under the circumstances but people use it as deflection for their unacceptable actions, so it's best not to. On a closed circuit their behaviour was unacceptable, if the road was open then you may have to be prepared to avoid the public!

Anybody watching can clearly see what he did was wrong, like you say good job you had the camera otherwise it would have gone down a different route which shows what type of person he is.
