    When I was 13 years old, living next to Paris, (I am 23 now) Baptiste Herpin was my private teacher at home, he was not famous as today. I have memories that I was so much impressed that I was shy to play. 😂 Then, I gave up saxophone at 15. And now, 10 years after I see his level , and I start to play again 😌 He have an amazing talent !

    I remember that I had an acoustic guitar teacher who tried to teach me some of those kinds of techniques, you know, repeating a pattern of phrases and then playing the repeated pattern backwards while changing the notes and the tones from major to minor and so on. Unfortunately for me, I was too young, too dumb (more so than these days) and devoid of enough musical talent to really appreciate it at the time. This video is truly a pro spilling the beans on amazing techniques. By the way.... his head movements and facial expressions are also awesome.

    There you are. That is the truth .For me. That is how i got to this point in my career, and I am 75 and still on the scene. You are very smart to always ask. I think the first time I asked a real guy( a bass player, I play sax, it´s not important-ask anybody that can play)I was 16. He said" learn the blues in every key". Which later became " everything in every key." But an interesting thing Eddie Harris told me was " You will play what you practice". Thank you so much for your KZread channel. I learn a lot from you and your sincere attitude.

    Awesome, thanks for posting this! His musical "thinking" seems closer to the "original bebop music theory" than the modern chord-scale theory approach, at least from what I've read about the original beboppers. Particularly this struck me: rather than an altered scale the C#min6 is thought of as a chord structure on top of the chord. That's how Dizzy Gillespie and others thought about it I seem to recall.

    I know a little about Baptiste, I know about some others killers "sax pro"; it is perhaps better to learn about you are able to do, before starting by knowing what these incredible guys are able to do. Don't confuse their way, and your way. As much as possible , avoid lessons from monsters, they are more able (unconsciously) to destroy you more than help you.Even if they look like cool guys , what they may be. French use to say "bon musicien, mauvais professeur - bon professeur , mauvais musicien".

  • @cab88888

    @cab88888

    I agree. Seriously, what is this lesson? I mean, it is great is so many ways because Baptiste is incredible, so first of all thanks for sharing and all, it was full of great phrasing, good advice, and good vibes, lots of gutsy moments, but the virtuosity needs to rest, and settle down, from time to time... In this case o, the guy's face is red, and outside of Baptiste talking english like a french cow, I feel like it is going in all directions at once, full speed... And as a result, Saxologic is just fanboying, saying "hell yeah!"... Pretty sure that he has transcribed it all already, to make the most of it, which is the most important part. But with a normal student, this is no teaching, it is having a chat and show off. At that level, nothing wrong with that, but I believe that when you really want to "pass the torch", you need to be a little more prepared... A good teacher will sum up things and break them down in a way that people understand, and you have to prepare for each of your words to follow each others like a good book would. A teacher will explain concepts. Not just play them, hoping that the student might transcribe when you play it at 400bpm. A teacher will assess his student, and know where he lacks, and what he needs to practice, so that he can come up with a program that will free the student up. Baptiste is a player. You'll learn music like a child will learn by talking, bit by bit, and it is going to take time, so in one lesson it is going to be short. But it is so fun to see! Juste pour l'accent déjà... ;)

    It's the little bits an pieces approach I like. For me, the tri tone substitution was a highlight. Instead of C7, play through C#-7/F#7 which is basically an elaborate detour 1/2 step above the resolving key where you just sort of fall into it. Same sort of thing applies to the #m6 (1/2 step above the dominant). And also practicing fast. slow is boring. if you can't do fast there is no point bothering to play. better to wreck the line and blow past half the notes than to play it safe. eventually, you get there. but you'll never be a player worth listening to if you stay in slow lane

    The longer one lives, the more one has an opportunity to hear, see, learn and commit to memory - and, of course, play and pass on to others. Never heard of Mr. Baptiste Herbin; he is surrealistically awesome! Thanks for sharing him and his musical feats, many of which are appreciably (C-)Parkeresque in characteristics. Lohvissimo!
