I've used Duolingo for 5 years for French, Spanish and Japanese! It's a good app for building vocabulary, but it's not good if you're trying to become fluent in speaking! In Duolingo, I get frustrated when I type out a 15 word answer and get it wrong, because I forgot an "s" in one of the words... I mean, in conversation, nobody cares if you've forgotten a single letter lol.

The trick with Duolingo is it doesn't stand by itself. For me I'm doing the following: 1) Duolingo, I got a paid subscription and do it quite regularly. 2) Using @Spanish with Qroo Paul (this channel) to understand theory, this video is great and I'm going to work through the whole series. 3) Also in youtube, studying the alphabet, numbers, telling time. 4) I got a tutor. 5) Starting to watch youtube videos that are in Spanish. 6) Learning the lyrics of spanish songs I happen to like (I'm into salsa dancing). 7) Soon I'll be practicing face to face at meetups...

Despite having a number of years of Spanish I picked up on a few tidbits. The bigger picture you present is to look for commonalities and patterns. I love learning Spanish because for me it's like a puzzle. I enjoy the challenge of figuring out how the sentence fits together in context. I believe there is a certain amount of memorizing and learning proper grammar required (typical language teachers focus on this aspect). I've never been taught Spanish by a native english speaker. The fact that you have on the ground experience is a huge benefit. Thanks for your efforts.

First I have to say you are doing a great job to help English speakers to learn Spanish, sometimes it is an advantage to come from own experience as a learner than from university with an academic approach to teach people. At the age of 65 I started to learn Spanish just for fun. One of the first things I discovered were the many similarities between English and Spanish. Even for a German native, it makes absolute sense to learn Spanish from English instead of learning from German. Only when it comes to pronunciation it is an advantage to be a German native speaker, we use a lot of similar sounds like the Spanish and even the pronunciation rules are often similar, even when the writings are different. Beside the similarities for the endings .. al and the change from ..tion to ..ción I discovered another one, the change form ..ty to ..dad for many words like society->sociedad, university->universidad and another good thing is, the ..dad endings like the ..ción endings are always female, "La conversación en la universidad era muy formal."

I’ve never understood the problem people have with sponsored videos. The creators provide this information to you for free, in large part. But, they need to make a living just like you are. If you’ve only been watching Paul’s videos for a short time, and you’re skeptical about sponsored videos (welcome to social media!) then maybe you haven’t come to know him and to trust that what he’s recommending is well thought out and is what he believes in. But if like me, you’ve been watching him for a long time, then that’s a harsh judgment.

Hi Paul. I paid for a course that convinced me to ' acquire' the language through story reading. I have done a lot of that, reading the story, listening to the story, reading and listening at the same time. It has its benefits, developing an ear for the language. However, I just thought there was something missing. They focus little on the grammar. Discovering you on youtube was the missing link I have been looking for! Thanks. You are a heck of a guy.

Brilliant! This first lesson contained far more informacion* about Spanish than my first 10 Babbel lessons. The organización* is clear and well thought out and the presenter’s outline ingeniously anticipates the PRACTICAL needs of an English-speaking beginner trying to learn Spanish. ThisQroo Paul fella is an excellent communicator as well as an inspired teacher and has given me back my expat sparkle for attempting to learn a new language. One tip (or perhaps, warning). If this single video were a meal, it would be considered a large feast. Albeit only about a half hour long, it is VERY calorie dense - linguistically. So you may need to take small bites, pause, and chew on what you have learned at various points. And you may not be able to finish it all in one sitting. I myself plan to return to the lesson as I would a favorite restaurant. It’s that good. *I learn this “ación” trick of converting English words to Spanish in this first lesson!

Thank you for your very clear and confidence-building way to learn Spanish - it's great. FYI...re your comment about the double consonants in English, for example in 'recommendation', there is, in fact, a grammar rule called the 'double the consonant' rule, which ties in with a rule called the 'vowel-consonant-vowel' rule. This states that if you have a word like 'tap' (with a short 'a' sound) and you want to make it continuous, you have to double the consonant to make it 'tapping'... otherwise it would become 'taping'. .. and tape is a vowel/consonant/vowel word (with a long vowel sound). Therefore, as the letter 'o' in the word 'recommendation' is a short vowel, it's necessary to double the 'm' after it to keep it sounding short. I hope that's clear...and yes, I am an English Teacher...! 😀

I liked this one again! I guess my old like got wiped out when you reposted. My Qroo Paul Word list has 104 words on it now! These are a list of all the words used in the first two episodes of your new series. Like I said last time I was really surprised how few of the cognates were on the "1000 basic words" list. This number does not count all the definite and indefinite articles you introduced. On the TV Spanish News program I watched last night has the word "invitar" but I checked and "invasion" in English, which I learned is spelled with a "s" and not a "t" is "invasión" in Spanish. These videos look fantastic production wise. One thing is that I noticed that for much of the time your hands are below the frame and we can't see them. You have to take a year of language to get a degree here at Sacramento State. I took a crash summer school class in ASL, (American Sign Language) which is the hand sign language used by deaf people. I also took some classes in railroad operations where I learned a little about the railroad hand signals that rail road folks use. My point is that your hand movements and facial expression carry meaning. But if your hands are out of the frame we can't see them. I thought that it might be from your years of police work that you keep your hand gestures close to your belt line just in case you need to use your service weapons. You are so perfectly framed in these shots that I don't want to suggest pulling the camera back and making you smaller. Maybe if you thought about it you could make your hand gestures higher. It is cool that even now you raise your hands up into the frame to emphasize an important point. My guess is that just me making you aware of how your viewers see or don't see your hands will help you to keep your hands in the shot frame when you want them there. Here is a quick question. At the taco stand that I frequent on weekends I get a burrito and a Spanish lesson every night. They are trying to teach me how to say mild as in not spicy. I was hearing "Pesoso" but I checked and this isn't a Spanish word. I am starting to think they were saying "picoso" as in "un poco picoso". The other theory I had at first was that I was hearing "soso" which is on my basic word list as "bland". Well anyway any incite you can give me on what I was hearing would be great. These videos are great Paul, keep up the good work.

I've never thought about the importance of showing my hands. I already thought I was waving them around too much as it is...lol. As far as the taco stand, they normally say no picoso o poco picoso for a little spicy.
