Mike has been playing the guitar since he was 12 years old, and from that first moment his love affair with music and the instrument began. Fresh out of school at the age of 16 he attended the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford and completed a year-long Diploma course.
After finishing the ACM his life as a full time musician began, playing in numerous bands and touring up and down the country playing iconic venues such asThe Shepherds Bush Empire, The Astoria, The Underworld and London’s Jazz Café. He’s also been fortunate enough to support industry legends Paul Weller, Blondie and Katie Melua.
Mike’s session work has led to his working on a variety of projects - from performing with stars such as Ricky Wilson and Diana Vickers, to appearing in many TV shows and adverts. Mike loves being on stage performing, but is equally at home recording in a studio - where he has worked with Alex Von Soos (All Saints, Seal, Atomic Kitten), Mike Horner (The Prodigy, Shakira, Bloc Party), and Mike Chapman (Blondie, Suzi Quatro)

I agree. The TELE is no doubt (hard) rock suitable. But it has much more characteristics and power in the mids and highs in comparison to the warm, hugging, swampy tone of the LES PAUL. P.S. Awesome demo and playing @Mike Bradley!

I'm a bit obsessed with telecasters. I love everything about them. The look, the feel, the sound. I have a 70s telecaster custom with a neck humbucker and several of the more usual ss configuration including one with the low E string removed and tuned to open G. I've always found LPs a bit muddy (not 'warm'). If I need a bridge humbucker then I reach for my SG or my hss strat. I try to love my guitars equally, but the teles know they are the favourites. My order is tele>SG>strat(hss)>LP>strat(sss).

Just like to say I love your Channel and you do comparisons in a way that brings out the best of each guitar your comparing . For metal blues and hard rock I use a Les paul for songs with a country flavor the Tele is the way to go , now you can get Les Pauls with a split coil which is the next best thing to a tele . What it comes down to is the song your playing as a songwriter I am all about frequencies so it depends on what sound I am looking for . Just a suggestion here put a ES335 in the mix that has spilt coils .

Two different colors of sound. Both great at what they do. Tele is brighter in the 2-3 K range. The Les Paul is a little Fuller in the middle frequencies. Either can be tweaked with an EQ pedal. The humbuckers on the LP will drive a tube amp to break up sooner. If I was a singer on stage, I would appreciate singing alongside of the Les Paul, because it leaves space in the upper midrange frequencies. Those are the same frequencies that form consonant sounds on the edges of words. So both guitars at the same level... the Les Paul would compete less with a singer for those small sounds that give definition to the vocals. As a recording vocalist, you quickly become aware of small things that can make a big difference. But overall, Any song could require a different tool... In the studio Jimmy Page chose the Tele over the Les Paul for the solo on “Stairway to Heaven.” Why? Because it sat in the groove better for that song. Eric Johnson chose to use a ES 335 on “Cliffs of Dover” while recording it... for the same reason although he plays a Strat live. I could go on but I spare you- Both are great instruments. It cost more and takes longer to build a Les Paul. That Nitro finish takes several applications, and that’s manual labor $. Doesn’t make it a better tool because it costs more. Both are better for some jobs.

Lead players hit up the tele with a neck humbucker and the classic tele pickup at the bridge. I think the 51 had this. But use a maple strat neck with the frets filed down flat but not lower to keep definition but can play faster. Keep the lacquer fresh. Rhythm players use the less Paul with the frets filed flat and low.. And a top nut cover. That tele can ring on the ends of notes and high notes punch almost too high. Which is good for a lead but inconsistent for a rhythm.

TLDR: Played exclusively LPs for years, but recently started using Telecaster on pretty much everything. Teles were harder for me to play; you can't really hide mistakes and must play them more deliberately. Once I became accustomed to wrestling down the neck, I must say it has helped unlock one of the best guitar sounds I've ever had. HOWEVER in bigger rooms/open air/ festival type situations I've come back to using Les Pauls because they add back that thickness so you always have presence, plus a slim taper neck with Gibson scale + radius practically plays itself, freeing me to galavant around the stage. I now believe Jimmy Page got the balance right - Teles in the studio and small clubs and Les Pauls for the big stage fireworks. Mind you, this is all for clean/light gain indie/classic rock sonically close to Doobie Brothers, Tom Petty, Spoon, Dr. Dog, Franz Ferdinand and such...

This is a good example of what a les Paul should sound like. A fatter tele. There were a few licks on the bridge pickup where you could barely tell the difference. Too many les Pauls are mud machines. When buying one you should compare many of them and eliminate the ones that sound muddy.

I have played really well-made LP`s where they sounded like Tele`s on steroids, and that`s the problem, many LP`s aren't very good and sound muddy. Is Mike #2 a few inches shorter than Mike #1? How is that possible. Clearly, Mike #2 is the one to take home to meet the parents (due to the plaid shirt and matching strap). I’m thinking Mike #1 is more fun though. The Tele wins.

Some songs sound better on Gibson, and some on Fender. Gibson have a warm, full, fat and muddy sound and it is better when you have only bass and drums in band, but Fender is better for cut throuhg the mix when you got 4 and more instruments in the band.

Sorry to be that guy, but there isn’t such a thing as greatest ever. Both those guys have done so much for contemporary music. Technically Jimmy is a more stronger player (though he can be very sloppy too) But I’m a big fan of both of them.

Man you are ripping on that tele. The Les Paul is beautiful but if you're trying to rip with a fuzz it's not in the same galaxy as the tele, the gibbo turns to a swamp of mush. It's like a wild female that likes to ride motorcycles 150mph in the same room with a 60 year old grandmother that will break her leg if she trips. Grandmother can doom though, she's also clean as a whistle for jazz.
