I’m a Gibson guy myself and also love a strat, but a Tele came with me overseas when I played guitar for my mom the day she passed. It was the one I could trust to travel with and do everything I wanted knowing it would be the last time I would get to play for my best friend and the woman who supported me the most in all my pursuits. I loved my mom and that Tele is a forever guitar for me after all this.

I've had an interesting path towards the tele. I was once a highly skilled and sought after session guitarist, playing mostly Strats and vintage Les Paul's etc, and had a really priviliged future ahead of me in the music industry. Then, because of me being me, just when I realised how easy it was for me in the privileged position I was in to make it big internationally as a session guitar player, I immediately quit, sold all my guitars and found an old early 18th c Italian violin in an attic (how lucky can you get??) and dedicated my life to becoming a baroque violinist and a session drummer. I got to a really high level doing early music on the violin and jazz/pop/folk session work on drums and got to a somewhat passable level on the baroque guitar and lute, and have been doing this for the last ten years. All the time, I've still been in studios, especially with drums, playing with great guitarists with their Strats, Teles, Gibsons, Gretsch guitars etc. So I've really seen what each guitar could do from a third person perspective, playing with these guys on a different instrument. When I got a call not long ago to do some gigs on electric guitar by someone who knew me from when I still played, I thought it would be a good idea to buy my first electric guitar in basically a decade or so. It was a series of gigs that paid enough to basically be able to afford to invest in any guitar I wanted sub 4000 dollars. And I was an experienced enough musician in general to now be swayed by brand or anything; I knew that I could afford to make no compromises tone wise and when it came to stability. When I was thinking of which guitar to buy, my past as a Strat and Les Paul guy came back to me for just a moment, but immediately I shifted my perspective to what I had heard those 10 years in studios listening to all of those guitars, but not playing them myself and REALLY getting a new perspective on what each guitar could do to recorded music. And I instantly knew. TELECASTER. 100%. I had played quite a few way back, but never felt the need to own one. But after 10 years of listening experience, I knew I needed that sound specifically. It felt like it was THE most important guitar tone to have access to, and that everything else had to come second. There will be other guitars down the line. But the Tele had to come first, just because of the golden, organic tone, stability (SUPER important) and incredible versatility.

Surprisingly, the Tele is both one of the rawest and most elegant guitars of all time. Its simplicity is a source of inspiration as it gets out of the way of the player to allow the music to breathe and flow naturally. That, and you can drop it down a flight of stairs and not only will it be okay but it will most likely still be in tune.

The Telecaster has a legitimacy that no other guitar can match, in my opinion. My story is a lot like yours - it took me twenty years of playing and performing before I even picked up a Telecaster. I was just goofing around in Guitar Center and suddenly two hours had gone by and I was in love. My previous guitar purchases had been based on a thought that I "should have" whatever it was - Les Paul, SG, Explorer, etc. The Fender Telecaster was the first guitar I had never wanted and had never pined for, which I bought strictly for how it played, how it felt in my hands and how it sounded. It was an epiphany about what really mattered. The irony is that, once that epiphany had occurred, I realized that the Telecaster was actually the best looking guitar of all. It had simply never occurred to me. There had been clues, through the years. I had seen Dave Mason live back in 1999 and remembered thinking (damn...) I didn't know a Telecaster could sound like that. I saw Prince live and gained first hand knowledge - the man could give the whole audience a haircut with that thing any time he pleased. I remembered being 13 when Billy Squier's first album was released and how much I loved that record. It still holds up today and the cover photo of him with his Tele is simply timeless. I'm not ashamed to admit that how I look does matter. I came to the conclusion that I would never look stupid wielding a Telecaster, no matter how old I became. As great a guitar as it was, I ended up selling my black and white Explorer because I looked and felt silly holding it by the time I was 40. Somehow, the Telecaster will never become a parody of itself or cliche in the way that even a Les Paul can be.

Great video, you covered all the great Tele stuff. I was always a strat guy. Bought and sold dozens of guitars, but always kept a strat. I NEVER considered a Tele. I thought they were thin sounding and ugly, But I also never played one. Anyway a few months ago I got a bug up my ass about a Tele. Don't know why. I was working on my playing a lot. More than any other point in my life and more a more I became dissatisfied with my Strat tone. I started changing pedals and amp settings. Then it hit me, I need a Tele. Now I still never played one. I just had it in my head that it was the right tone that I needed at that time. So I went out and played one at Guitar Center and I couldn't stop playing it. I was there for 3 hours. During that time I only played about 3 different Teles. Decided on the Elite because I loved the feel of the neck more than the others. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would be as versatile as it was. And what you said about how it sits in the mix was spot on. The bass player I play with was ecstatic! Suddenly, the muddiness was gone and everything was crystal clear. Needless to say, I'm fully converted. 100% Tele guy. Best guitar ever.

Despite it having two pickups, the Telecaster's tonal versatility spans so many genres. It's mind-blowing that each of its three pickup configurations have generated signature sounds for so many disparate musical styles. For example, bridge pickup yields the Tele's signature twang found so often in country and blues. Bridge & neck gives you these beautiful glassy cleans that have defined math rock and twinkly Midwest emo styles, and the neck pickup with the tone rolled down gives you a mellow sound largely devoid of overtones that work great in modern jazz. All hail the mighty Tele!

When I had the money to really buy a good guitar I kept looking at different stuff and my teacher kept whispering the legends of the tele in my ear. We ended up going on a tour together where I played rhythm for him in a country band. By the end of that I had to have it. They don't seem immediately cool when your a kid but once you understand what they are all about they become like mystical artifacts and their greatness comes from another plane of existence. I stare at my tele every once in a while in silent awe of how amazing it is to me. One thing I love about it is it keeps you honest. you cant hide in the swamp like you can on other guitars. each pick hits like a hi hat. There have been several times I start a gig and notice my playing isn't all there that night. I start getting self conscious and I want to throw on the neck pickup to try hiding. That's when I flip to the bridge pup and play like I'm responsible for every note. It makes you get in the right headspace where you have to be proud of your choices good and bad. Pure honesty. I'm gonna play my tele now.

Caleb Hurlbert I couldn't agree more. I don't play on tour, I'm usually just in the studio with my buddies either helping lay down some ideas or just having fun during a jam session, but more than any other guitar, as you said so accurately, my tele requires a "deliberate honesty" in my playing. The tone stands on its own, no matter what settings I have it set to, yet compliments, if played in such a manner, the music from the rest of the group. There is no hiding. If I play something slightly off on my tele, it will disrupt the WHOLE groove, where as with my les paul, if I'm slightly off, I can blend into the background until i figure out exactly what is off. My tele demands me being mindful and focused. It's one of my favorite things about it. Also, playing it unplugged, it rings like a bell and each note shines brilliantly. I would highly suggest having a telecaster to play even if just as a practice guitar around the house or in your home studio.

When playing sitting down, the tele is the most comfortable. Strats are always slipping off my lap. Also much lighter than a Les Paul. A Les Paul will cut off the circulation in your leg when sitting. Standing with one will give you shoulder problems!

The Telecaster was never the "underdog". It is the Grand Daddy of all electric guitars be they Gibson or other Fenders (forget all of the other later countless 'also rans'). It was my first electric guitar and even though I have a LP, and SG (and have owned consecutively every Gibson or Fender ever made) I still gravitate to Teles. It is the one guitar that allows the player to be "stylistically naked". It is just you, your fingers and the Tele.

I started out playing with a Telecaster because I'm left handed. 25 years ago, Fender was the only company regularly making lefty guitars outside of some exorbitant custom jobs. It's very slightly better today, but not much. I guarantee if you walk into most guitar stores they'll most likely have only one lefty guitar (despite lefties being 10% of the population) and it'll likely be a Telecaster or a Stratocaster.

Hundreds of guitars and 40 years later, I bought that Telecaster, and can honestly say it instantly changed how I play, connected me to something greater and definitely improved my tone and overall sound. Welcome to the family! Teles forever. - I love when I get a call for a 335 gig... a job where the 335 is the best choice. I can't wait to get all the sweet tones I have learned to coax out of my blond 335. But that's just it. If the leader calls a surprise tune in a different genre, I might struggle a little. If I can bring more guitars to the gig, great. If I can only bring one guitar, Telecaster. Most reasonable Asian, Mexican and US Telecasters do the job fine after I put my favorite pots wires and at least one pickup in. When I finally got my first PRE_CBS Fender Telecaster, that changed my life. It's just me and the knobs getting every tone there is and they are all great. The guitar became a part of my body. I still love my 335, but it can't do what my pre-cbs telecaster does. Maybe if I had a pre-1965 335 - Pre-T-Top pickups are much more clear and open sounding.. but... I don't want to hire a bodyguard for that. I have built more Telecasters since. One is basically a hard tail Strat... it's better than my actual custom shop strat. If you want the pre-cbs experience but want to save 30 grand, check out Danocaster. He nails it.

You did a great job of describing all the advantages of a telecaster and I could tell that it was heartfelt and genuine. The telecaster was my first guitar and was the one I used in my bands back in my gigging days. Then I mostly quit playing for about 30 years and I’ve started playing again and frankly I’ve become more of a Strat guy. But I realized I missed my tele recently and bought a super cheap squire affinity and it plays great, feels great, and sounds just like the more expensive telecasters I used to play from fender. And by the way, the affinity is a Toploader rather than a string through and it still has the same great sound. As you noted there’s something About these guitars that makes you want to say forget all the fancy crap I just want to hear how well I can play and you sit down and play a song that normally is played with a Les Paul or a Stratocaster and you can still make it sound right and that’s an amazing thing.

Well since you talked about guitar Journeys. Mine was not that long, I never had the means to own a lot of guitars. However I did start with a cheap squier strat, then went on to a Jackson which I owned for a lot of time. For many years I thought that my end game was a Gibson Les Paul, so I'm into humbuckers as you can see. After a lot of time spent on my jackson I went on to a PRS, which I help for just months and I sold it to get my first American instrument a SSS standard strat with texas specials and maple neck. I instantly fell in love with the instrument and the fender idea in general. It's like I was wandering for years through guitars (and through music genres of course) and I finally saw it. A guitar designed by Fender more than half a century ago was what I needed. Without saying anything more my end game is not a Gibson Les Paul now, but my strat and an American ash/maple tele. And yes a tele comes with coollness and street credit, because nobody just buys a tele. They will either buy a metal guitar, a strat or a gibson (or the copies of those) but never a tele. Except when they REALLY need one

Tele and a Princeton reverb add OD pedal to taste. I have a king of tone that I use just the clean side mostly and crank the volume and use my volume knob on my tele to control the crunch. I’ve had a ton of gear and that rig has been my go to for years now. The best part is the tele is so sensitive to your playing it forces you to really consider how you pick and where because with the tele there’s no where to hide if you have sloppy technique.

Man this is almost exactly what I went through. I was a Strat and Les Paul player for years. Was always chasing a little more bottom end out of my strats, and couldn’t get enough clarity for the very ethereal stuff I do with the Les Paul’s. I play ambient stuff, but also play high gain Riff Rock/Alternative/Metal. Anyways, I spent a lot of bread trying to find my number one that was versatile to do it all. I got Strats with HH configuration, and just tried so many types of guitars. The telecaster was really one of the last things I was considering. Well Christmas 2017 my family got an incredible deal on an American Special Tele, and they got it for me for Christmas. I really liked it, but it was a long time before the loved developed where I realized all the tone I craved was in the guitar I already had! Now it’s become my number one, and my go to guitar. I’m considering buying a second one now to keep the American Special original, so I can mod the other one a bit for fun. As I really lack nothing that the American Special Tele doesn’t give me. It’s all there, The ethereal beautiful ambient stuff I play for my original songs, as well as the heavy riffing Metal stuff I play for fun. Not to mention it’s amazing at the in between Alternative, and Post Rock stuff as well. I mean there’s nothing that a good Tele can’t do. It’s the most versatile guitar I’ve ever come across, and I’ve played everything over the course of 18 years. Tele’s are just so underrated, and an underdog compared to the Stratocaster. I kinda like it that way though. Don’t get me wrong I love my Strat’s still. It’s just if I had only one guitar it be the Tele for sure. Great video man! I can tell you have slowly fallen in love with it over time too!

0:01 Jimmy Kimmel breaks it down. Ive always been drawn to the minimalistic look and (potentially minimalistic) sound of teles. Sometimes, less _can_ be more.
