I saw both of the "new" tours of Miss Saigon and Les Mis in the last few months in St. Louis (I've seen the original versions multiple times). Miss Saigon's production was absolutely enormous, taking up the entirety of the stage. Les Mis in comparison felt tiny because they only used the middle part of the stage. That said, Les Mis is Les Mis and I will never get tired of it. The cast and orchestra I saw was amazing. They acted their parts to the hilt and belted all the big songs beautifully. The staging was fine but like I said it felt small and I miss the turntable. It gave the original a cinematic sweep and made all the set changes so fluid. Watching the barricades slide in from the sides, meet in the center then spin around at key dramatic points was stage magic and I'm sad they're getting rid of it :'( (Really enjoy your reviews, btw)

I went to see this not that long ago and it was absolutely amazing!!! Will Richardson is now one of my favourite people to ever play Enjolras.

FANTASTIC review! I have to comment that I LOVED LOVED LOVED Martin Gurre - but the first edition of it - unfortunately they tweaked it to a slow, painful death (I saw it 4 or 5 times as it was 'developed'), and the tour was a million miles from the original and in the wrong direction. I hope it will be revived at some point. I just never got why people didn't get it. Love that you have a rant about the poor diversity casting too! If you had to choose - Miss Saigon or Les Mis? Miss Saigon all day long for me!

"Working on the Land" is a bop and they got rid of it in the subsequent productions of Martin Guerre :/ I saw the Miss Saigon tour in St. Louis last week. It's such a big show and I knew I'd probably never get to see it on that scale again, so I went three times 😃

Excellent review, thank you. I'm a little blasé about Les Miserables, but every production I've seen has been superior to reading the book, which rates as one of the most exhausting experiences of my life. Cheers to your call for diverse casting. Those who complain that people of Asian or African descent were not involved in 19th century French insurrections seem oblivious to the notion that people weren't singing ensemble, speaking English, or well-lit during those insurrections either. It's a play, not a documentary. Get over it.

When I was last in London I wanted to see one of the big shows phantom or les mis. It was a hard choice but i ended up seeing phantom (which was amazing). so I'm so happy I will get to see les mis now on the tour. I'm will be getting a warm up before I see the show as I'm seeing Hugh Jackman on his UK tour (who was in the film) who will be performing some of the songs. I know the tickets are expensive but I know it will be worth it. 3 1/2hrs!!! Will have to go to a matinee show. Yes, I remember Bernards watch from my childhood. Thanks for other great review guys. Can't wait to see it.

Re: Miserable Les. First, let me say I know plenty of people who love the show, have seen it multiple times and, at least one who claims it changed his life! Wanting to know what all the fuss was about, a few years ago I added a copy of the DVD of the film version to my Xmas list. Santa was kind(!) and l sat down to watch with ( honest ) an open mind. Within five minutes I concluded it was biggest load of pretentious drivel I had ever seen. I sat though it to the end ( I had to, it was a gift ) hoping it would improve - it didn't. Where is the plot development? Character development? We are told a character is bad/good/sad/pitiable and have to accept it. The music is faux operatic and the lyrics - well, banal doesn't begin to describe them. Are these criticisms only valid for the film? Perhaps, I've met lovers of the stage show who are disappointed in the movie version. Maybe a spectacular theatrical production would overcome many of its ( perceived by me) deficiencies. I just don't get what people see in it. If one was not a regular theatre goer who had not seen better, I could understand it, but that doesn't apply to you guys so I remain perplexed. Hey, that's just what I think ...

Talking about diversity, I saw Les Miserables in London early this year. Overall, I loved the show and enjoyed most parts. However, the Cosette actress is the only African-British on the stage, which make the character quite special. Plus, I'm so sorry to say this, Cosette's voice is weaker compared to others, and Eponine looks smarter and more beautiful than Cosette on the stage. So I didn't enjoy Cosette's part either on the plot or on performance. (I double checked the cast photos, Amara Okereke (Cosette) is actually same beauty as Elena Skye (Eponine), I blamed the makeup and costume..)

@@Lynnys1 I am so sorry if any offence. I did google before, and it seems the proper way to say without knowing the nationality. And African-American is the common word in the U.S., however, we are in Britain. I'd love to know a better way, truly.

Elaine Wu in the UK we just say black or African-British. Equally, Amara is one of the best Cosettes I’ve ever heard and I’m an opera singer so....

@@BelladonnaRLGK thanks for the suggestion, I will keep it in mind. Yeah, I just realised Amara won the Best Actress in Musical of the stage debut awards. I believe she is one of the best. However, I was just a little bit disappointed about her parts on the day in the theatre (I have watched several different casts lesmis before, also several musicals in London, the first time in theatre for lesmis though). Maybe I was wrong, maybe she was not in her best status, maybe something else, I don't know. I hope to have a chance to see it again soon and I might change my point of view.
