its amazing how hunterways are like this. Our one we brought for the family (hunterway x kelpie) - he is the same, listens to verbal and whistle commands, rounds up all the other dogs at the park, stands up to a bigger more aggressive dog no problem, and his bark terrifies everyone that doesnt know him.

Bred in NZ for high country farms. Huntaway means to hunt the sheep away from where they are. Usually dog trials are ‘hunting’ uphill not downhill. Thus the importance of the resounding bark. We have ‘Heading or eye dogs’ (not barking) for bringing the sheep towards you. Used for bringing ewes with lambs towards you or in steep hillsides where there is the possibility of a ‘smother’ if sheep bunch into a gateway or gather too quickly in smaller gaps. If pressed to hard the sheep with walk over each other and smother the bottom ones. A true disaster. NZ shepherds often muster huge mobs of sheep and much caution and control of dogs is needed to stop this from happening. Teaching the stop signal and the ‘walk up’signal (not run) is very important as you can see with this great dog.
