A lot of people probably think Les is the most legendary bassist on that stage. Mike is a genius. But Phil absolutely can not be replicated.

i love phils bass playing very much but i think john kahn (JGB) had a better musical connection with jerry, they could groove the fuck out and it felt way more lethal than phil dropping bombs did. But with that being said though, phil was the best bass player possible for the grateful dead, no one could ever play a song like "the other one" like phil could

Dee's Diner is still there and a 3 minute drive from me. I loved when Les said "Who's been to Sebastopol" and Phil raised his hand. lol Both Les and Mikey Hart live here too.

@@SilverShareHolder D's is fully open. New owners since song and food is a little different. Claypool Cellars is now in a building on Hwy 116 closer to Forestville. He does however have a food truck shaped like a hotdog and bun onsite that he call Wine and Weiners. Thur-Sun Not to nitpick, but I guess I am, Les really lives more in Occidental and Mickey is more in Graton. But Sebastopol is commonly used for that whole area.
Pig mask aside, this is the tamest Claypool performance I've seen on KZread

That’s the great thing about him. He goes crazy when he wants to but also knows how to be a very tame and supportive bass player. Just look at his playing with Tom Waits! You’d never even be able to guess it was him playing if you weren’t listening closely. Great guy, never steps on other people’s toes.

Such a bad ass song. One of 100s of them.. Never gets old as you hear different notes each time you listen to them.
Mike playing right next to Phil must be intense for him
Amazing! That was an epic version of the song. Gotta love the sitar. 3 bass legends, incredible drummer & just as good keyboard.....this is a jam you don't want to miss. Has to feel good for Phil rocking out with these musicians. 80 years old and going strong. Les is always taken it to the next level. Would love to see this ensemble live. More sitar!!! Who's going to Dee's Dinner? Me! ....she's awesome.
I saw this performance on some random cable channel way back in the day and have casually thought about it for almost 20 years not knowing who anyone was and not even sure it actually existed
I was 3rd row Center for this. It's actually in The Theater @ MSG in the basement.
