Leopard kills and eats cheetah in Ndutu Tanzania

In the mesmerizing Ndutu area of Tanzania during the arid dry season, we were graced with an awe-inspiring spectacle. The harsh conditions had pushed the resident animals to their utmost limits in their quest for survival. As we left camp in the early morning, a remarkable scene unfolded before our eyes. A graceful cheetah made its way down the road, catching the keen attention of nearby impalas and vervet monkeys.
In a synchronized response, both the impalas and vervet monkeys erupted into a chorus of alarm calls. Their vocalizations served a twofold purpose: to signal the cheetah that it had been spotted and to alert other creatures within the vicinity of the imminent danger.
As fate would have it, the cheetah, accustomed to the vast expanses of the open plains, now found itself navigating the intricate woodland terrain, where peril could lie concealed behind every bush. And true to the alarm calls of the vigilant impalas and watchful vervet monkeys, their warnings reached the ears of a colossal male leopard, arousing its curiosity. Intrigued, the leopard ventured forth to explore the source of the commotion and seized the perfect opportunity to launch an ambush on the unsuspecting cheetah.
In a devastating display of strength and dominance, the cheetah stood no chance against the formidable might of the leopard. With a swift and fatal strike, the leopard swiftly broke the cheetah's neck, bringing an abrupt end to its life. After the chilling act, the leopard briefly retreated but later returned to claim its unusual prize. Gripping the cheetah firmly by the neck, the leopard carried its lifeless body into the sheltered embrace of a dense thicket, where it would remain concealed for the remainder of the day.
With anticipation, we revisited the scene the following morning, hoping to catch even a fleeting glimpse of the elusive leopard. As if granting us a glimpse into its secretive world, the leopard ventured down from the secure perch of a tree and gracefully disappeared into the depths of the surrounding woodland.
Our curiosity led us to a startling discovery. The resourceful leopard had hoisted the lifeless cheetah high up into a towering Tortillis tree. Throughout the night, under the veil of darkness, the leopard had embarked on a somber feast, partially consuming the cheetah. The remnants of this nocturnal banquet served as a haunting testament to the raw and unforgiving nature of the animal kingdom.
Later in the day, drawn back to the location, we encountered the leopard reclining upon a fallen tree. With a watchful gaze, it maintained a cautious distance from the cheetah's remains, ever vigilant. Soon, the predator's hunger compelled it to return to the tree. Resuming its macabre feast, the leopard continued to feed on the remains of the cheetah.
The leopard completely devoured the cheetah over the next two days. With the cheetah completely consumed, the leopard once again vanished into the depths of the wilderness, leaving behind a scene that served as a powerful testament to the cycle of life and the indomitable nature of survival in the unforgiving dry season.
The cheetah's demise evoked sadness, yet the leopard's power and cunning were awe-inspiring. The dry season compels animals to exhibit remarkable behaviors. Survival demands lead them to undertake unconventional actions, showcasing their adaptability. Witnessing this cycle of life highlights the delicate balance and resilience of nature's tapestry.

@@gustavari3047tigers usually avoid fights with adult leopards due to the risk of injury, the Tiger may win a fight to the death but the prize of winning is too big and the Tiger wouldn't risk injuring itself by fighting an opponent that can inflict significant damage

What an amazing sighting. Given their low numbers it is sad to see a cheetah die, but it is all part of the eco-system and evolution. Plus, plus, plus: exceptional videography (with help from Raj). Well done! 👍

Extraordinary encounters can happen in the dry season! Very well documented Stu, just recently had an encounter in the late dry season in Serengeti, whereby we came upon an 8 mth old Leopard cub that was feeding on an adult male Caracal it's mother had (likely) killed as it proceeded to drag it's prey up a nearby tree. A once in a lifetime encounter!

Est ce que une coalition de trois beaux et larges guépards adultes de 70kgs chacun aurait changé les circonstances ?.. je pense que le léopard mâle indépendant serait plus prudent..et peut-être éviterait l'attaque des guépards

Yea, but most of the time, they fail to kill leopards. The leopard escapes most times. Leopards always kill cheetahs whenever they catch them.

not really. Lions will kill leopard cubs and Leopards will kill lion cubs. Lions will also kill adult leopards they catch off guard because they are direct competitors for prey animals. Its not so much hunting as taking care of the competition. This is true of all the large predators. Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, Hyenas, Wild Dogs. The young of each are killed by the others whenever the chance to do so occurs and adult targets of opportunity are also killed by larger and stronger adults or in the case of Hyena and wild dogs large packs. Of course the lion has to total advantage in that showdown. They are not only individually larger and stronger one on one compared to those other land predators but they also live and hunt in collective prides.

@@Rambo20244There has been documentation of a leopard killing a lion in captivity. I believe a circus. Obviously in the wild a leopard doesn’t stand a chance against an entire pride and even one on one 99% of the time a lion will kill a leopard. Just saying it isn’t impossible for a leopard to kill a lone lion.
