Truly an actor with an amazing range!!! Many many others all worth watching. Shutter Island (heartbreaking - he kills his wife after she drowns their three children. Prison for Crimnal Insane - suberb cast). He willingly goes for a lobotomy rather then remember anything.

After knowing all the story of Johnny Depp, how her mom abused him and all his brothers and even his father and how he had to go through a lot of bad things since he was a little kid, the character of Gilbert Grape reminds me a lot of his own personal history. I know Gilbert wasn’t abused, but he had also a very hard and difficult life and had to take care of himself almost his whole life, like Johnny. I’m almost sure he saw himself reflected on Gilbert too when he did the movie

and till this day he says filming this movie was such a low time for him and he doesn’t know why and maybe he feels this because it probably subconsciously remind him of his childhood and just how things were in life while growing up, or possibly his break up with winona, who knows! but i agree that his character as gilbert is the most relatable to him yet.

And so so many other superb roles (again I mention Shutter Island as few know of it) J. Edgar, Gatsby, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Revenant, Catch me if you can, Gangs of New York (great), Blood Diamond (SUPERB SUPERB - about the illegal diamond smuggling and death to African forced slavery) Inception, Aviator (again range from young to insanity of Howard Hughes at the end), The Man in the Iron Mask (must see) This boys life (heartbreaking and he is so young) and of course Romeo and Juliet. The Quick and the Dead (Sharon Stone paid for his Salary as she wanted him in it after seeing him in the Titanic- TriStar Pictures did not want him) (he was 21) To quote: """"""""""She said, "In my opinion he was the only one who came in and cried, begging his father to love him as he died in the scene.""""""""""""""""" And more.

Ik that Leo wasn’t mentally disabled in this movie but he prorated it so amazingly he and all of this cast are phenomenal actors

Sue Poch Love this film but personally Johnny’s best movie was “Black Mass” where he plays Whitey Bulger.

They are sooo young.

It's unhealthy how many times I watch this movie. I'm obsessed with Johnny but this movie is just so good. So simple and good.

Just watched Grape for the first time …. totally stunned by Leonardo’s chameleon-like performance in this film … so real to the character … and Depp’s quality shines through too showing why they have both enjoyed such a range of interesting acting roles since they made this film.

It would be great to see DiCaprio and Depp in another film again.

I like the fact that no one compares them in the comment section. Every one love both of them

look at Dicarpio schooling his colleagues at the age of what 17,18 , i mean he was just a kid but more mature and professional than everyone else when it comes to acting , he was destined from a young age to be a great actor

Leonardo and Johnny were spectacular in this movie, but, the rest of the cast were wonderful. Very proud of them all. Thank y’all for a wonderful and heartfelt movie. 👍🏻😄❤️🥰

I remember being in middle school (7th grade year) when Titanic came out. It was common for boys to trash on Leo, because of the 'boring romanance,' the girls swooned over him. Then I grew up, and still didn't really care for Titanic. I saw this movie at some point though, and his performance in the role of Arnie, it is truly amazing how he approached the role. It wasn't offensive or unnatural, it was so convincing, that I became a fan of Titanic simply because of the respect I gained for Leonardo DiCaprio after seeing him in this movie. It was a performance, yes, but he brought a certain humanity to the role. Hats off to Leo!

Fun fact: James Cameron wanted Leo in Titanic after watching What's eating Gilbert Grape because he was impressed by DiCaprio's ability to play vulnerable characters so well

What a gem of a movie and marvelous acting. I have been volunteering in an orphanage where there were mostly kids with limited mental and physical abilities. Seeing Leo’s acting was so surreal like how he could convey all of those complex feelings through his acting.
