Leonard Bernstein - Young People's Concerts: What Does Music Mean?

Leonard Bernstein told the television audience at the start of the first Young People's Concert: "No matter what stories people tell you about what music means, forget them. Stories are not what music means. Music is never about things. Music just is. It's a lot of beautiful notes and sounds put together so well that we get pleasure out of hearing them. So when we ask, 'What does it mean; what does this piece of music mean?' we're asking a hard question. Let's do our best to answer it." During the course of this first program, the New York Philharmonic performs portions of Rossini's "William Tell" Overture, Beethoven's Sixth Symphony, and Ravel's La Valse.

Fabulous to have all these here. I’m 72 and a composer and these shows were an invaluable part of my music education. Years later I got to meet Bernstein a few times. What a genius and what great gifts he gave to the world.

Just finished watching Bradley Cooper's "Maestro" which I thought was absolutely wonderful, and raced to KZread to find particular Bernstein pieces, when I came upon your playlist of 53 of his Young People's Concerts (probably all of them). I can't thank you enough for compiling and posting this extensive playlist. As a young musician myself, I can remember watching this program every week, and can't tell you what a thrill it will be to watch them again, after 50-60 years. Thank you SO VERY MUCH!!!!

I can't find words to thank you for this compilation as I've looked it up for decades in DVDs outlets... and nothing or impossibly expensive. It would be really marvellous if you could permit other youtubers to save this collection in our playlists. Thanks a lot.

Bernstein was like a rock star during this period. His dedication to musical education introduced many youngsters to a new dimension in music. A very different time in our national history. Young people dressed up in their best clothes to attend a concert. Yesterday I saw two teenage girls wearing gym shorts to a church service. // The same thing goes for flying on an airplane. Nothing special anymore.

Can anyone else hear Maestro Bernstein humming along with his own conducting??? A little distracting, but kind of part of the charm. And yes, I cannot agree more with his approach of educating his audience based on pieces and images familiar to them, it really draws them in.

When I was in 5th grade in a tiny southern Illinois grade school, the Evansville symphony came and gave us a two hour lesson in classical music. I'm 62 and I can see it like it was yesterday. It started my love of classical music. These videos bring back so many memories. I don't know if they still do that in grade schools but I sure hope they do. It's the only way to introduce the next generation to it.

@dubus9503 You're joking, right? Not only have most public schools these days done away with arts and music programs completely, but the majority of the teaching that they do in grade schools has to do with the thousands of genders and pronouns that have been invented by the imbeciles of today's society who don't have a clue about science and biology in particular, but don't even know WTF THEY are anymore.

He could have started with any number of "music for children"--Prokofiev, Britten, etc. Instead, play something the kids KNOW when they hear it--start with prior knowledge. LB was a natural teacher.

Here I am in 2023, 66 years after this originally aired. I am about to turn 60 in a couple of weeks. I have never heard music appreciation taught in this manner and I am absolutely in awe. Yes. Bradley Cooper's 'Maestro' brought me here, because I am a fan of film making and acting. I only knew of Leonard Bernstein through his work in cinema, and never gave thought the extent of his brilliant mind and his love of music and humanity. We must then also appreciate technology in the 21st century that has made his legacy available to generations beyond. Thank you Trine for these gems.

But it's truth, and then you have the reverse side of that coin: you can stick almost any story that you want to music. If a piece of music evokes you something, you can stick that story/feeling/memory to the sounds without any problem. And that makes music extremely personal.

Try the alternative: "Music is about..." and see how quickly your audience--of any age, but especially pre-teens--doze off. Negative definitions are an excellent way to capture attention, as long as you can fill in the rest.

But it's something that people need to be told. Especially nowadays people are used to music being the soundtrack to something, and this kind of close listening is getting rarer. There's music everywhere, but I would say fewer people are actually paying attention to it. This is about appreciating and enjoying music in its own right. Of course music can be used as a part of storytelling, and it works great for that purpose too. But that's not all there is to music. And you don't need the extra stuff to enjoy the music (because not all music has that "extra stuff" attached to it).
