Awesome lens comparison - I still consider yours the best investment of my viewing time. I ended up with a used Tamron 35mm VC, and although I struggle with the magenta chromatic aberration in high contrast images, I'm extremely pleased with the lens. Thanks for the insights!

excellent video Man ! one thing you may have missed is Color Saturation/Science that each one produces ; I like the colors from L lenses i have used, like : 50L, 85L, 100/2.8 IS Macro, 135L, 200/2.8L, 400/5.6L, 24-70II, 24-70/4L IS Macro, 16-35/4IS L much more than Tamron's 35, 45, 85mm VC primes, and also 70-200G2, 15-30VC, 24-70VC (old), 150-600G2, all of which i had tried on my 6D. Also the bokeh highlights from tamron 35 or other primes, not only have onion rings, but are soft, lacking in clear circular outline, which i don't like. Now i am eyeing the new announced Canon EF 85mm f/1.4 IS L and will buy it when it's out. Thanks.

Awesome review I’m just about to buy the Canon. Unfortunately the Tamron costs $300 more in my country which made my decision easier but for the same price I would pick the Tamron because of the weather sealing.

Yep, I will when there's a significant difference. In this case, the Tamron focuses down to 8 inches, the Canon to 9 inches... which just didn't seem like a big deal to me. But that's now how I use 35mm lenses, so I'll keep it in mind in the future :-)

They appear to both be great lenses. I already have the Canon 35mm F2 IS. It’s a nice lens. I love the size, especially at the end of weddings when it’s party time. The save weight is nice then. It does autofocus fast and reliable too.

Super helpful video!! I regret selling my 35L (I justified it by the fact I couldn't solve a front focusing issue despite Canon service and MA attempts, plus I needed the money). The Tamron would probably be my first choice as replacement with the Sigma 1.4 Art and Canon f/2 IS coming in after that. I picked up an old Canon 35m f/2 non-IS but it's surprisingly soft off center. And it sounds like angry bees.

Excellent review Matthew and I like the the way you may it out with the side by side graphics, etc. I like the style of your reviews. I will check if you have ever done the Sigma 24-70mm ART as I was considering that lens for my Canon 5D4. I still don't understand why Canon does not make the f/2.8 24-70mm model with IS, but they put the IS on the cheaper F/4 version.

Thanks! I have done the Sigma 24-70 ART, and I've also done the Tamron 24-70 G2 (and the original). I'd go with the Tamron rather than the Sigma, but it's always a matter of personal taste.

Absolutely agree with your review, I'm using the 35 f/2 IS with my Canon 6D and I have the 45 f/1.8 VC which I know isn't 35mm but I have one and use it on my Nikon D800 and to tell you the truth if the Canon 35 f/2 IS is a 35mm focal length then the Tamron 45 f/1.8 VC is closer to 40mm, both are sharp even wide open and imo the VC seems faster focusing than the IS but that might have something to do with the bodies.

Another wonderful review. I have the Canon 35 f/2 IS and use it with the 5Ds and I have the Tamron 45 f/1.8 VC and use it with the Nikon D800, both high resolution bodies and imo the Tamron is the better of the two, it's close but it's not a fair comparison. I use stabilized lenses because I have muscular dystrophy and need every advantage I can get to capture the world as I see it. I would love to see a review of the Tamron 45 f/1.8 VC lens in Canon mount with a comparison to the Canon 40 f/2.8 STM or 50 f/1.8 STM, these lenses don't have IS but they are small and light weight compared to similar non stabilized focal lengths. As for price, the $50.00 goes away if you buy the Canon EW-72, if you buy a cheap 3rd party lens hood as I did you're savings is $40.00.

Both seem excellent. I like the size of the Canon, but I agree that the Tamron build quality, bokeh and contrast is excellent.

Excellent review as always! What about the closest focusing length for both camera? I read recommendation of using the Tamron as an unofficial "macro" lens because of its close focusing length.

Ahh, yes... that's true. It's not how I shoot with a 35mm, so I didn't really get into this time. The minimum focusing distance of the Tamron is about 8 inches, and the Canon is just a hair over 9 inches, so it's not really a major difference, imho.

Hi Ameer, The Sigma/Tamron video is 90% finished... it was just delayed by a trip I made to Canada, and the subsequent backlog of work. It should be finished within the next couple of days, and published shortly after.

Great video!! Which one is good for my portraits during golden hour (low light) and indoor sessions? I have 50mm 1.8 but I need 35mm for tight spaces.

Hey Vanessa, they're actually both great for this sort of thing (though of course, wider lenses will have a little more distortion than a 50mm). The Tamron will give you a tiny advantage in light (f/1.8 is just 1/3rd stop more than f/2) and shallower depth of field... otherwise, you could go either way. I'd lean towards the Tamron, but they're both excellent lenses.

I'd personally take the Tamron. I like the build quality, I like the contrast across the frame, and I don't mind dealing with the fringing. Both nice lenses, though.

As I wrote in a comment above, I own the Canon. If it only had better bokeh I would recommend it due to it's small size. Other than that I think the Tamron is a better choice, mostly because of bokeh and maybe coma.

How does the tamron compare with the RF 35mm?

It's actually been a while since I've used the Canon lens, but I don't remember it being any noisier than the others. In fact, my general testing procedure is that I give them a rough comparison, and if there's a significant difference, I include a recording of it in the video... and I didn't do that here :-)

Late reaction.... But I notice the Tamron is less wide than the Canon in the Space Needle shots. Is the Tamron really 35mm or maybe 36....37...etc.?

If you want a lens hood for the Canon that is extra money. After that they are equal in price. Tamron for me for the added weather sealing!

Wow! The first and maybe only comparison between these lenses! That's great, thanks! I have waited for someone to do it. I even thought about buying the Tamron and make such a comparison myself. I own the Canon and I can tell you that your bokeh testing was rather incomplete. Comparing bokeh balls is nice for that kind of shots. But since I mostly chase my kids around and take photos of people I tend to get other kinds of backgrounds. If you've used the lens for a while you'll notice that: 1. The quality of the bokeh (as in blurry backgrounds, not bokeh balls) is smoother in the center of the frame than in the corners. 2. The quality of the bokeh also depends on the focus distance. It gets nicer the closer you focus, preferrably closer than one meter, or three feet. In the worst cases the bokeh is really ugly. By looking at similar images on flickr taken with the Tamron lens I can tell that the Tamron easily beats the Canon. Other than that I think your comparison is great! :-)

Hi Alexander! Thanks for the comments :-) If you've seen my previous videos, you probably already know that I'm not really a bokeh aficionado, and since bokeh quality is entirely a matter of taste, I don't spend much time comparing it... I showed the "bokeh balls" only as an opportunity to mention the Tamron's onion rings. Thanks for the additional information, I'm sure that others will find it useful when making their choices.

I actually like the look of the vigneting on my canon 35 at f2 :) I took it over the tamron or the sigma mostly because of the size advantage and weight. And i am glad I did, the result is: I take it all the time....

Yep, a lot of people add a little vignetting in post processing to draw the eye in to the center of the frame (I do a lot of the time, too) as a standard prctice. Still, I'd rather add it in photoshop/LR than have to try to correct for it when I don't want it :-)

I went for the Canon 35mm f2 IS because I needed the image stabilisation! So good for run n gun filming!

I don't shoot video, really, so I don't think that I tested it specifically. However, they're both very quiet AF motors, so I wouldn't be worried about it like I would an old lens with a micro-motor.

Nice comparison. 35 f/2 IS is epic lens for crop bodies, at least for me.. Not a spec of dust in it after two years, AF spot on on any Canon body and with x 3-10 digital zoom and that IS its like having some high end bridge camera for video.. I use it for casual shooting and for indoor sports and events..Really nice lens to own and not that expensive for what it is.

I'm thinking of switching to Canon f2 due to alot of focus breathing issues of my Tamron 35 1.8 while shooting a wedding! It's not the first time but due to the nature of my job I can't risk dealing with focusing issues while the wedding is happening, it produces beautiful image but dang man if it only has a better focus I'll stick with it.

It is interesting how things have changed. It used to be that after market lenses were never quite as good as OEM lenses. That has changed. Lenses today, are often as good or better as one another. My question is then, how good is long term durability?

That's a good question. I've had good luck with all of my 3rd party lenses holding up. In the mid 1990s, I broke a Sigma 70-210 f/2.8 in half, but I dropped it on a concrete floor, so I'm not blaming the lens. Similarly, I broke a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 about 10 years ago... again, dropped it on concrete... though it still works just fine. All of my other Tamron and Sigma lenses, even though that have suffered a fair amount of abuse during my travels around the world, have been just fine. Currently, my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 (gen 1) for Sony is my oldest 3rd party lens in regular use, and it's just as good today as when I got it in 2018, though I expect that I will replace it with the 2nd gen before too long. So, for me, the lenses last as long as I'm likely to want to keep using them.

I'd love you to comment on the micro contrast of the Tamron. Looking at the black and whites, it looked like the Canon has the edge. That's a big topic... in part because there are a lot of misconceptions surrounding the concept of micro-contrast. I've read several good articles on the subject over the past decade or so... I think one of them was by the former editor of Camera & Darkroom, written over at the Luminous Landscape back when digital was relatively young. I've only glanced at the one you link to, and I've already seen some things that I think are mis-characterizations (not the least of which is that "Sigma ART lenses do not have micro-contrast at all." That's nonsense. I'm also familiar with the author, and we've disagreed before :-) ). I'm deleting everything that I've written beyond this point... this isn't the proper forum for me to get into the topic in depth. Maybe I'll write something about it on the site in greater depth, or maybe it will be part of an upcoming video. :-)

It's hard to go wrong. Just depends on whether the type of shooting that you do will benefit more from the extra light and better bokeh of the Sigma, or the image stabilization and compact size of the Tamron. Or Canon, for that matter.

Why doesn't Canon make an F1.8 lens for crop sensor cameras? The only option is the Sigma 18 - 35 F.18, which, aside from its legendary image quality, has a seriously bad reputation when it comes to autofocus, and has neither image stabilization nor weather sealing.

Yes, it's too bad. The main reason is probably that if Canon made the lens it would cost twice as much as the Sigma, and since the bulk of the market that shoots crop sensors are casual hobbyists, most of them would priced out... leaving a pretty tiny market for the lens. That's probably less true these days with mirrorless cameras where a lot of pros are shooting with APS-C sensors (since they're similar to super 35 size). Anyway... let's hope that Sigma updates their design with better AF, if nothing else.

@5:52 "No color fringing" Looks to me like a lot of green colour fringing along the rooftop edge...

Yep, and there's some magenta, too. It's pretty much only visible at 100%, though.... "Minimal" color fringing or something like that would have been more accurate, I suppose. Still looks minor to me, but perhaps this is a difference in our monitors or viewing conditions.

Cheers Matthew. Yes perhaps viewing differences. I'm using a Sony 49-inch 4k tv as my pc monitor for critical editing. It shows blemishes quite well, but Lightroom would eliminate the CA no doubt.

Douglas canon out performed the tamron in most areas. Only down fall with the canon is the vignetting in the edges that provided less contrast then the Tamron. If tamron made better lenses then Canon, canon would be out of business dumb ass

oldtimer canon is soft lens,tamron better optically,minimal vignete and far sharper

your a Canon lover and I hate to say it but the tamron is better. better micro contrast and contrast. lol

He rambles on about sharpness for 5 minutes... Bruh

the canon is not sharper at all, you are on glue lol
