    It will take up to 32GB (links in description) but I wouldn't say there was much value in doing so unless you are finding 16GB is not enough

    So I have a question. My disk drive went bad, and I have a new 2.5” ssd to replace it. Is the operating system on that smaller ssd, or is it on the hdd? Can I just plug and play with the new ssd? I’m wondering if I should transfer my operating system over, or should I not worry, because it is actually on the smaller 80mm ssd? Also what exactly is the point of having a ssd and an hdd

  • @TechMadeEasyUK

    @TechMadeEasyUK

    4 жыл бұрын

    So let's take your questions one at a time, in order: The operating system will be on the smaller SSD. When you plug your new SSD in you may need to set it up in Windows; click on the start menu, type "computer management" open the app, click on Disk Management and set it up from there. Leave your OS on the smaller SSD, it'll be faster than a SATA SSD. The reason to have two disks is that SSDs are much faster, but more expensive. The idea is you use your SSD to install your OS and apps so that they're faster, while storing all your large files on the larger hard disk

    Not particularly, in most cases. While some types of game do use a lot of system RAM (simulation games, mainly) most are more reliant on graphics memory, which is seperate from RAM. Increasing the RAM is more beneficial to productivity workloads like video editing and rendering

    Something worth of note is that when you "upgrade" your ram, more specifically, when you add a second ram stick, your CPU performance WILL improve! This is because modern CPU's are design to work in dual channel (dual sticks) and their performance is hindered when using a stick alone. I got a Y530 as well and saw a performance increase of +/- 10% on the CPU

    It's to avoid causing any electrical damage to your system. with a laptop the battery is always supplying charge to the motherboard. In theory there are two risks to upgrading while the battery is connected; 1) you could damage your new components, 2) You could receive a small electric shock.

    @@Slipknot98Rzk The smaller of the two drives uses a connector called M.2. It's a connector found on most laptops and desktop motherboards these days for high speed storage. The larger drive uses standard SATA connectors for data and power. SATA is a legacy type of connection used in laptops and desktops. SSDs using the M.2 connector tend to be slightly faster and more compact, but are more expensive

  • @kmy100

    The existing SSD that was removed is a M.2 SATA SSD, that explains the 2 grooves. Whereas the Samsung SSD that was installed after that is a M.2 NVMe SSD which has 1 groove. However both are M.2 connector which are compatible to a PCIe (serial bus) slot. SATA and NVMe are both different technology. Whereas M.2 is merely a connector. Whereas the existing big square HDD / SSD disk on the top right uses a 2.5" connector. Thus M.2 & 2.5" are 2 different type of connectors. SATA & NVMe are 2 different type of technology. NVMe is the latest, much faster than SATA.

    It's not so much about brand as the likelihood of speeds and timings being different. You could suffer a performance impediment or (worst case) stability issues. • @TechMadeEasyUK

    I wouldn't recommend this approach. The issue is your system would default to booting from one drive or the other as setup in the BIOS. You would not easily be able to switch between OS. I would replace the Optane with an SSD and then install Windows and Linux to the same SSD, using the Linux setup options to manage dual boot settings.

    Good Question. RAM is what's known as volatile storage - it's used when your computer is on, but when your computer is turned off it doesn't retain any data. Hard disks and SSDs are known as non-volatile storage; they keep your data when it's turned off or restarted. Your operating system, apps and files are stored in non-volatile storage. So upgrading RAM will not cause you to lose any data on your machine, only upgrading your hard disk or SSD will.
