Lenovo’s new Legion Pro 5i is a decent gaming laptop, but it’s got a problem.. Last year’s version was a great option, and it’s much cheaper, so is the new 2023 model worth it?

Dunno how do you feel about it, but I think that reviewers should opt more for not buying this year laptops (and GPUs), it's the only way consumers can influence manufactures. I got really disappointed with news that 4070ti is selling pretty well :( And 4070 this year is a peace of garbage, almost same performance as 3070ti, but 30% higher price ... I've got 2 years ago my rog G513QM with qhd display (of better quality than those that they put today in new laptops), 5900hx, 3060 for 1350eur. Today for almost 10% more performance I should pay 20% more (4060)... that's ridiculous, that is an real degradation... That made me to buy an PS5 and just cancel my plan to update my laptop, I'll keep mine for R6 Siege, but most probably next laptop will be no more than a typing machine.

Love your videos Jarrod! Any chance you could make a video showing settings for what you would do in Lenovo advance bios. Ie overclocking and tdp settings. Thank you.
Hey Jarrod, love your videos and I've recently bought a Max-p 3060,is there any way possible for you to show on how to make use of dynamic boost?
You can fit the m.2 drive. The “bending” is completely normal as it allows you to insert the drive at an angle with ease. Trust me, it wont break anything in the laptop.
As someone buying this for mainly an office laptop for I.T. work, I see this as one of the best value options possible. Business laptops are terribly priced for their specs. The gaming performance is a bonus and for £1,700 this does the job as well as I'll probably find. I was actually planning on getting the slim 5i, however I'm not sure that allows for a second SSD to be installed.

It would be nice to see a test on a normal i5 or i7 to see how computers with CPUs perform versus ones with CPU+GPU or with AMD how a APU compares to a CPU+GPU.
Great video as usually. It seems that from marketing Lenovo thought if they add "pro" word in naming, that means that it must cost more. Comparison of lenovo 5 & 7 pros should be interesting as maybe it worth to take base 7th version rather than taking top 5th.

At $1249, this was a phenomenal opportunity relative to similarly priced gaming laptops, including the ASUS ROG Strix G16, which comes with an i9 CPU but 4050 GPU, or HP Omen 16, which has a much poorer display even with the same refresh rate. The system display is great, the build is solid, and it comes with a large number of ports. For someone who will use a laptop for multiple purposes (work, web browsing, watching videos, online roleplaying, and minimal gaming [mainly BG III]), I don't think there is a better value available at the current time.

Lenovo Legion Pro 5i 16" WQXGA - 13th gen i7 with 16GB - RTX 4070 is available in approx 1600 USD at my place, do you recommend it? or is there better option at this price? kindly suggest.
13900 HX or 7945HX with legion pro 5? which is the best ? can you do a comparison please on the legion 5 pro?
I got a 2022 5i pro (3070ti) that I absolutely adore. This channel actually helped me make the decision over the 2022 M16 I had. I got it on sale with a few nice features, including that 3 year full warranty. After taxes and shipping it came out right at $2000 USD. It might be worth looking into depending on your needs.

good job choosing the lenevo. My 3 year old m15 is absolute garbage and started having issues from the 3rd month of ownership. Asus is a marketing company at it's core. Planning on replacing it with this laptop from the video since I get some pretty good discounts privately.
The 4070 is a difficult one to justify in a thick chassis this year. You’re really not getting the same benefit that you used to from going with a bigger machine. So far I’ve tested the Flow (lighter/smaller/smaller charging brick) in some of these benchmarks and scored the same, even in the lower powered 90-100 watt profiles, thanks to the efficiency of these cards. Plus the extra hurt of seeing 4080 and 4090 laptops nearly doubling those scores 💀

hey Jarrod, which one do u choose? mostly for gaming ASUS G16 i7 13650HX-32GB-2TB SSD-8GB RTX 4060-FHD+ 165Hz or Lenovo Legion Pro 5 i7 13700HX-16GB-1TB SSD-8GB RTX 4060-WQXGA 240Hz they are the same price here
Hi Jarrod, have you seen the new Lenovo line called LOQ. Can you review one with a RTX 4060 and compare with the Legion
There is something that is a downgrade from last year model and that is the lack of Thunderbolt port on intel model. Hope AMD model will have USB4
man, the 4060 and 70 are sorry. I think there's an argument for the 4050. The 4080 is amazing, brings gaming laptops to a whole new level. But upgrading from a mid tier 30 to 40 card makes no sense.
can't wait for you to test thin and light rtx 4070 laptops (msi stealth 16, zephyrus M16, Omen ascend, legion slim etc) some come at full wattage but lets see if they can actually mantain the power

If anything, GPU prices should be cheaper than a decade ago due to improved manufacturing. The idea that they expect us to pay more for more performance is insane. Not happening

Well R&D, shipping, marketing and a whole lot more comes into play when it comes to tech. But yeah, some one off features like RTX, DLSS or AV1 isn't really much of a worthy reason to buy a new GPU for the AVE people.
@Davidc-om3mc
Жыл бұрын
Well it's completely opposite. GPU prices would be cheaper if the processing node stays the same as the manufacturing technology improves. However the cost for microchip manufacturers i.e. TSMC, Samsung & Intel for every node level improvement actually increases exponentally. For example, in order to develop 3nm processing node production line, TSMC actually spent more than $40 billion USD. That is A LOT of money spent on comparing to 28nm node, which is $65.5 million more than 10 years ago.

Balanced mode is surprising. Less wattage, but great efficiency. Considering the costs of running this laptop over the course of a year, Balanced Mode could save you some cash! Over the span of it's usage, say 2-3 years, that's a considerable saving.

Yeah this is a great laptop if you take cost of ownership into account. It's like buying inverter versus non inverted appliances. Sure, it's cheaper at first, but once you use it over a year, you'll be surprised how much electricity money you are wasting. Still, I am disappointed in Lenovo downgrading the display's maximum brightness in this year's model.

originally got the i7 4070 for 1700 during a sale on lenovo site, but was pretty disappointed in the performance and was just planning on getting the 3070ti variant from last year until I saw a 4080 legion 7i 2tb/32gb open box at my local microcenter for $2400 so I adjusted my budgets around and bought that instead and am way more happy. Getting double the performance in hefty games like spiderman and cyberpunk and witcher 3 with RT maxed. I don't think anyone should pay more than like $1300 for a laptop with 8gb vram. Gonna be an issue real soon, heck even for some games right now.

And in a couple years the 4070 will be relying more on DLSS3 to maintain smoothness, and relying on devs to include technologies in future games is an unknown (I'm old enough to remember the attempt to bring 3D to gaming - the only good thing to come out of it was 120hz panels)

Hi Jarrod, could you please set up an Australian based buying guide/site? just like you do for the US market
This year's Lenovo Pro 5i is a outright downgrade from last two year's model and apart from getting CPU and GPU refresh, everything is downgraded. For example, the 500 nits 240Hz screen is an optional upgrade this year and the base models are having a 350-nits 165Hz panel, a significant downgrade from the standard 500-nits 165Hz screen in 2021 and 2022 models. Thunderbolt 4 has been removed from this year's model whereas it was there for last two year's Intel models and even last year's AMD version got USB4 via BIOS upgrade. The Screen is still providing 100% sRGB, like last two years with around 70% Adobe RGB and DCI-P3 coverage whereas Asus G, M, ROG Strix/Strix SCAR, Alienware M16, all are offering almost full DCI-P3 coverage, making them very good for Video and photo editing tasks.

Not really Lenovo's fault, but the 4070 for around this price is just bad value considering how it performs. People who are just gaming should buy the $1350 3070Ti model and get basically the same performance for $500-$600 less as you mention at the end of the video.

Unfortunally its not only NVIDIA with the 4070 but also Intel 13th gen is very disappointing. Both Price to Performance and Performance per watt is bad.
