Great video🎉 I think that some people have so much to say that they need multiple avenues to say it. Lenny’s photography could stand on its own even if he wasn’t a musician. Joni Mitchell’s painting stands alone alongside her iconic song writing. I don’t know how they do it, but I’m grateful that they do! So inspiring

@@TatianaHopper if you haven't already you should check out Bryan Adams' photography. I was lucky to see one of his exhibitions (back in 2007) I actually assumed it was a local photographer who shared the same name and was really impressed with his work. He has also released a book of homeless people in London amongst others.

@@TatianaHopper haha I have just discovered this channel and see you have ready covered Bryan Adams mea culpa.
You have done the world a service making this series, it’s been so interesting and inspiring and well thought out!!!!! I think that we we all recognize these celebrities and feel like we know lots about them, and then learning about their development as photographers makes the pursuit seem more approachable maybe? Or, like you can see how someone else familiar has incorporated a passion for photography into their lives
What an amazing photography talent Lenny is. I never knew until I saw this video. Thanks for sharing. Another rock star photographer worth checking out is Andy Summers.
I did not know about Lenny Kravitz's photography. Love the idea behind 'Flash' and the images. Thanks for bringing this series to us! Excited for the next one :)

Thank you my friend, I think “Flash” without a doubt is his most interesting work in my eyes :)
I liked everything about the camera and how he shoots in B & W. The images were great. He has a very creative mind. I everything he does with his own unique perspective.
"respectfully declining or ignoring suggestions you guys have made on certain fashion photographers." Looking forward to the channel getting into the reasons for that resistance and how fashion photography, rather than individual photographers who ply that trade, fit into the larger arc of photography history. There are parallels with photo journalism in that there is a prominent commercial element, but that element exists to some degree in almost all creative endeavors. To me it comes down to intention. But while I might reflexively dismiss some fashion photography because of what I might see as crass intentions and little else, it is hard to ignore when wildly talented people are serving up visceral images. 😅Yeah, sometimes I'm a sucker for a pretty picture.
Hello Tatiana!! Thanks for another great and entertaining video. I'm hooked on B&W myself. A couple years ago, I had a contract gig that netted me some good money. I spent this on a Leica M10M. And I've been hooked ever since. I"m also now, shooting old medium format cameras, 99% B&W ...from square to 6x17 panos. The Paul Simon song, Kodachrome had it all wrong, IMHO the world looks better in Black and White!! ;) Looking forward to your next video installment, but in the meantime...have a GREAT day!! CC
Great video, I love these series. Hope you continue them.

Someone didn’t watch the video till the end eheh 😉 cheers for your comment Robin!
Yep. We all have different reasons for photographing and for some of us, it is about the feeling. And this episode and your discussion of this series made me realize that it's okay to express our artistic feeling in different ways, through different formats or, as in many photographers' case, through making photos of different subject matter and expressing our feeling in different visual styles/voices. (It is often said that to be a successful photographer one should focus on one style/subject matter, but, at least for em, that would mean suppressing that feeling that draws me to all kindsa stuff.) As you said, you love B&W (and I agree) but sometimes color is central, sometimes the image we capture is all about the color (and light and shape and feeling). Sometimes a photo's feeling is all about the color. Re artists who were successful in different art forms and who were fashion photographers, there is Cecil Beaton, who actually was not only a fashion photographer and WWII photojournalist, but he was also a fashion/costume designer. His most famous film costume (and set) designs were for My Fair Lady. Beaton followed his feeling. Anyway, thank you so much, again.
Nice work from Lenny. Andy Summers from the Police is also quite handy with a camera!
Lovely video Tatiana! Indeed Lenny Kravitz is a very interesting character. Poly math in the arts and he has expressed his talents with so many different ways. I have seen fragments of his photographic work here and there. It is nice to see everything in one place now.

Thank you so much for watching and even though it was hard to find his photography I think I managed to find a few shots and work he’s done over the years :)
What was most interesting about your short video documentaries is your look at song writers, actors, actresses, singers and other celebrities, who use photography capture a small part of the world. For some, photography was an extension of their creativity, as with one singer/song writer, it was one way of bringing thoughts and ideas to life. Much like a music video for MTV or VH1 back in the 1980s. Lenny Kravitz's photographing the paparazzi and his fans photographing him is terrific. Who is watching the watchers?! Thankfully, you don't have any how to videos that are more click habit than instructional video. Keep the fine work when possible.
Hey there! I just wanted to tell you that I love your videos, they are an incredible free way to work on the visual identity and visual culture, mostly when you can't afford another photography book. Thank you for what you do and please keep it up! Cheers

Hola.

This channel is pure gold!
I am a self taught documentary photographer by working on a 12 year project documenting Black American life in my Harlem community. I was a fan of his music and purchased his first and second albums. I thought he was a talented musician just behind Prince or Sly and the Family Stone. As his work as a photographer, he was very fortunate to have a father as a conflict photographer, though only a year, and, to be around very good professional photographers to help nurture the talent he has. I believe his strongest work is of the Paparazzi. As a photographer, we only show our best work. I am suspect of how many poor images he created to achieve the one shown in your video. I understand his statement about photographing humanity. My project was to show black people and my community in particular against the stereotype and to tap in to its humanity. I don't know how good he really is as a photographer as it takes many years just to get the basics right, particularly street photography which I avoid because it is so very difficult to make great, not average images, consistently.
Great video and I’m going to seek out LK’s photos books. I'm fascinated by celebrity photographers that have access to scenes or situations that the rest only dream about. I love seeing those candid images. I love looking through old 70s photo books from rock bands where the medium was nothing more than 35mm film… no $10k+ camera required.

He really is, very hard to find a lot of stuff on him but from what I seen he is super cool :)
I'm going to get a lot of shtick for this but here goes. In my own personal opinion, I find a huge hypocrisy in the photography world and what is accepted versus what is not. A user below commented "Lenny’s photography could stand on its own even if he wasn’t a musician" - I couldn't disagree further, despite photography being one of the most freeing and selfless crafts out there it is still such a heavily saturated, difficult and critical avenue to navigate. Any old joe taking photos like those in the videos would never get the recognition they deserve (and yes, any old joe CAN take photos like the above), we all know how Instagram has turned into a mass competition that it's almost impossible to make a name for yourself on it anymore. If I took the above photos into an art gallery asking to exhibit a collection, I'd be laughed at, but if anyone with any amount of fame takes a photo, they're praised, congratulated, even celebrated for their incredible talents and work. Photography for me is no longer about sharing with the world, but instead an intimate form of self preservation and memory capture to hold with me throughout my life.
@TatianaHopper
Жыл бұрын
You’re not getting shtick for me, I respect people’s opinions, in the video I’m very objective as a presentation unfolds and think it’s good to take the example of documenting life. With that being said I respect everyone’s opinions and I won’t say I disagree with you cheers for sharing your thoughts ✨
WOW Genes are amazing. You get your parents blessing without asking😎
I'm also photographer and musician, and I have to say I see maaany musicians with interest in photography. By far the second art musicians do, very rare you find musicians that are also writers, painters or any other artistic discipline, but for some reason photography, being so different from music in many aspects create a very intesive and interesting attraction.
@skazhenyj
Жыл бұрын
I suppose that's because photography is more approachable, and at least technically easier to master. Perhaps there's some cultural moment too, since photography was always part of the modern music world, capturing concerts, behind the scene stuff, also often being used for album covers, posters etc. Music events were always one of favourite photographic subjects, with so much going on on stage or in front/behind it, unusual costumes and styles, interesting light effects... Perhaps that eventually drives some musical artists towards photography, at least that's my assumption. Not in this (Kravitz') case though. I'm also interested in both arts, with photography being my main thing. Same was the case with my father as well (just the other way around). There is something about it for sure. :)

I will probably do it yes, here I was hinting at a series revolving around fashion :)
He's at the age rockers either take up painting or podcasting, so more power to him finding other avenues to branch out into.
Sean Tucker not Dean tucker. I like Sean Tucker's shows about street photography, and his simple fast and professional portrait techniques. I still want a riochi gr3x camera, but it's kinda down the list for now.
I don't know how influencial his work is, but 'Farin Urlaub' from the German band 'Die Ärzte' did some photobooks from his trips... he was talking about now and then about it.
This is very interesting. Kravitz's photos are very conservative, I feel like I'm looking at photos from the 50s and 60s. I was expecting something more modern.... :)
