Lenin and the Bolsheviks | What did Lenin really stand for?

The history of the Bolsheviks - particularly the life and ideas of Vladimir Lenin - contains essential lessons to guide us in the struggle for revolution today.
In this talk from the recent Marxist Student Federation summer school, Rob Sewell - editor of Socialist Appeal - explains why we need to build a revolutionary leadership on the model of the Bolsheviks.

good to see an educated and intellectual perspective on Lenin and the Bolsheviks as opposed to the mainstream politics perspective we normally get.

I owe it to you to say frankly that, according to my view, this effort to build a communist republic on the basis of a strongly centralised state communism under the iron law of party dictatorship is bound to end in failure. "The state as an institution is designed to protect and enforce oppressive class relations, such as that of the bourgeoisie over the proletariat, not erode them. Allowing the state to continue to exist will not assist in dissolving such relations, only in perpetuating them in new and equally destructive forms . Without the state, such classes will be unable to enforce their will on the populous, and thus will not be able to continue their existence." - Nestor Makhno.

I would really like to know why Trotsky is well regarded. I'm asking because there are many accounts of him being a narcissist, master of theatrics, fond of conspiracies/intrigues, and 0 qualms about betraying/lying to his collaborators.

  • @smalbeaste

On what do you base those claims? What are the "accounts"? On your first question: Trotsky did alot of things that is well regarded, played the key role in the October revolution and the creation of the red army, dedicated his life to defend internationalism and bolshevism. His analysies have been proven correct, while menshevik and later Stalinist ideas such as two-stage theory and socialism in one country has been proven outright reactionary time and time again. Trotsky, Lenin and true Bolsjevism is a tool for marxists today to organize for revolution in all countries and more and more workers, especially young workers, are seeking answers and ideas on how we can fight for socialism. Trotsky, Lenin, Marx or Engels and other important marxists arent well regarded because of their personal squabbles, who outsmarted who, who "won", their personalities etc, but for their ideas, how they correspond with reality and because they are the best source to educate ourselves politically for class action.

@@Tetragrammaton22 Trotsky wrote in the early 1930's as fascism was advancing and gaining ground in Germany. Trotsky clearly spelled out how fascism could have been stopped in Germany. Trotsky proposed a united front between the German SPD party and the German KPD party. The SPD was the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands. The KPD was the German communist party. Trotsky's idea was that the SPD and the KPD would put aside their differences and join forces in a United Front dedicated to fighting the Nazis. Had Trotsky's ideas been implemented, the Nazis could have been stopped. Trotsky's analysis of the true nature of fascism is unparalleled. Trotsky was writing this at a time when fascism was viewed favorably by millions of Americans and Europeans.
