Leica: The Good and Bad

Ғылым және технология

In our continuing series about each camera manufacturer's strengths and weakness, we turn our judgemental gaze to Leica. Cherished and derided in equal measure, what is Leica getting right, and where can they improve? We went to Wetzlar Germany to give our opinions.

    I've been using Leica cameras since 1968. They are, and always have been, the finest built cameras. Imagine using the same body and lens (M4/50/2) for 54 years and knowing it will probably keep going for another 54 years. That was the best month's salary I ever invested in myself.

    This comment feed is actually quite positive - but so many Leica posts are filled with negative comments from those who've never shot with one. Everyone is individual...I've shot with Nikons, Sony and Fuji and I'm now lucky enough to be able to shoot with Leicas. Are the pictures 'better'? No - it's down to the photographer. HOWEVER - do I WANT to shoot more with the Leicas - absolutely. And ultimately shooting more makes me a better photographer. Why do I shoot more with a Leica? This is where it gets to personal preferences. Personally I appreciate a beautifully built, tactile object. And that makes me want to grab it and take it everywhere I go 'just in case'. Can I do that with any camera - sure - but the feeling isn't anywhere as strong - I certainly never grabbed my Nikon D750 like I do with my M10P or Q. One feels like shooting a computer. One feels (to me) like shooting a camera. I enjoy the PROCESS of shooting SO much more with the Leicas. I purchased a Fuji XT30 for my son - our first Fuji - after he'd borrowed my Leica Q on holiday. He didn't take to it. Yes it's an awesome camera - but a million options - complicated menus. He just got fed up with menus, configurations, options etc. For some it's awesome, just not for him. So many comments compare the functionality of Sony, Canon etc to Leica and can't understand why you'd pay so much more for 'less'. Autofocus / burst rates / scene modes / video res etc etc. A basic Casio watch will have 100 more functions than a Rolex. I know which one I'd prefer. Functionality isn't everything. Do you criticise someone with a Rolex/Breitling/Tag/etc watch - call them idiots for spending so much when an Apple Watch or a fitbit or a Casio G Shock can do 'so much more'? So ultimately just be happy that there are companies still making products for different tastes - the world would be very boring if everything was the same. And the more companies producing more means they push each other to become better. Each has its strengths, each its weaknesses. Take what works for you, what you can budget for and ultimately what makes you happy and shoot more but don't criticise others for choosing something different.

    Thanks for the wonderful video..... I can really understand your predicament. Trying to get your hands on a newly released Leica is almost impossible unless you have connections with them. When the SL2 was first launched in Nov 19, I was told by my local Leica office that I had to wait 3-4 months before I can get my order. As I don't have the patience to wait that long, I called up the Leica Store in Wetzlar and they had stock for 2 pieces. Told them to reserve one for me and I flew there to collect it within a week. Same thing goes repair..... my 90-280 lens had some problems and my local Leica office said it will take 6-8 weeks to get it repaired as they need to send it back to Wetzlar. Flew over here for my holiday and it was repaired by the wonderful folks at Leica within a week. Fortunately for me, my experiences with the folks over at Wetzlar has been wonderful so far...... provided you can coincide your holidays with your trip to Wetzlar 😆

    Thanks for sharing this about Leica. I'm a 74 year old photographer who started with Nikon in the early 1970s and has bought into just about every brand of digital camera system over the last 20 plus years. In 2022, I decided to sell all of my cameras, including my Z system and shoot only Leica. As wonderful as those other systems are (Nikon, Olympus, SONY, Canon, Panasonic...) the Leica shooting experience and files rule the day for me. Yes, there are things I can't do with my SL2, CL, and Q cameras, but I'm fine... Better than fine.

    Why do all photos taken with the Leica come out blurry or noisy or blurry with noise? These are photos that look worse than photos from current cell phones. For the price of a Leica, you can buy a Nikon Z7 II with the new Nikkor Z 26mm f/2.8 lens and get stabilized, noise-free photos. I believe Leica is more of an emotional issue. A false sense of well-being for those who want to feel - deceptively - exclusive. Using Leica today is paying dearly for something that any cheap camera does as well or better.

Still, I can no longer afford using Leica gear (I do still own an old Leica IIIf and some ancient lenses, but my Leica is not fully functional and I can't get one that would be fit for everyday use), and part of that *is* the move to luxury items that Leica has forced for some years by now. Where I think folks get lost with Leica is thinking that it’s about the “Leica Look” or for people with more money than sense. While Leica does attract the latter, it also attracts people who are into the craft of making an image and not just in the image itself. And that craft goes down to using a hand-made camera. With any modern FF camera and the right lens (and it’s always more the lens than the camera), I can achieve the “Leica Look” in post. But with Leica, I have a vivid, tactile memory of making that photo. And that for me is why I shoot Leica.

  • @Kevon420

    @Kevon420

    2 жыл бұрын

    The Leica look is in the rendering of their lenses though. The “look” of a 50mm Summilux (or any of their best lenses) is the idea, it wasn’t until digital (and really the M9) that that idea could even be conflated.

  • @brklynjosh

    @brklynjosh

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Kevon420 agreed. And to underscore your point… Leica lenses (and, of course, the photographer 😅) are responsible for the Leica Look, not the camera (and the 50 summilux you mentioned, even more than the Noctilux, renders the best version of it to my 👀). We also happen to be in a great time when you can get an awesome look, even if not quite a Leica one, using Voigtlander lenses (and to a certain but lesser extent 7artisan and their ilk). Happily, for those who care mostly about the final image, you can adapt a Leica or Voigtlander lens to a Nikon Z-body and make a reasonable facsimile of what an M would produce. The experience, however, of capturing that photo with a rangefinder can’t be reproduced or adapted. Maybe once Pixii goes full frame…

    You mentioned watches and cars that are hand built and expensive. There is a difference 😅 although my mechanical wristwatch is definitely “outdated” it’s not reliant on anything specific to keep usable such as a computer, USB ports, batteries, memory cards etc. so you pay $10,000 for a wristwatch and 100 years from now it can still be very usable to the same thing. A 24MP camera with an SD card and a proprietary battery you’ll be lucky if it’s still even usable 20 years from now.

    Thanks! I really enjoyed this episode on Leica and the series in general. I liked shooting rangefinder cameras in the days of film (I started with a Zorki IV and then moved up to a Cosina/Voightlander). The viewfinder and manual focus was a great experience. I think that kind of shooting is more fun than the SLR used to borrow from my mom. When I got back into photography I bought a used Fuji X100v because it promised some of that same viewfinder experience. It’s certainly delivered in terms of image quality and enjoyment. I’d love to buy a Leica but it’s simply out of my price range right now.

    I have an M2, and I have an X100V; let me tell you the rangefinder experience is just not there in the X100"n" cameras. Sure the X100V is a great _streetwalker,_ has a superb, bright viewfinder. It's adjustable for deficient eyesight (Leica diopters cost $200). The X100V will get you shots that the M2 (or an MP, or M10, 11, etc) with a 35 will not, expert zone-focusing notwhitstanding; however that nail driving hammer feel of Leicas is (again) _just not there._ Sadly, digital Leicas, even used ones, command crazy prices (and then they're just computers that look like Leicas).

  • @MatthewLungerhausen

I am stunned by the computing power and features that are packed into modern digital cameras. Do you want Focus Stacking? Weirdly, the tracking AF on my original SL 601 is working surprisingly well with my Sigma 100-400, but I’ve held off from buying an SL2 because of poor light and weak AF performance… which left me “no choice” 😂 but to buy an M11 which arrived on Wednesday, my god it’s a wonderful thing, but I still think the SL Type 601 is the best value camera out here at sub £2k for a mint used one. The big downer though with Leica is it makes everything else you own seem like rubbish! Ah the tragic update. Cut to dramatic music and scenes of despair…. The M11 went nuts… while shooting the camera suddenly became unresponsive, the back screen wouldn’t work, the shutter would fire on continuous, but take no shots, and even when switched off a nasty glowing red light would not switch off! Taking out the battery, removing the card… several calls to Leica… it’s toast and is set to be replaced. Interestingly a friend of mine who bought his from Leica Manchester a week after me has seen his pack in… dingy firmware… who knows, but very annoying, confidence dented. Certainly I’d be concerned if I was using two bodies professionally as I couldn’t trust them.

I have Nikon and Olympus camera systems (APSC and M4/3) and enjoy them and with my Oly having all of the bells and whistles and the Nikon giving my first taste of creating beautiful photos.The experience of using the Leica Q2 Monochrom is different, the enjoyment is quintessentially the reason for buying and using this camera.

    I went from my first used M-E Leica and loved it! After 9 years I could finally afford a M10 but with the M11 already out, and after doing loads of research, I still wanted the M10. But I had to contact a dealer in Chicago (I am from NJ) who had a new M10 still in the box and I grabbed it....what a wonderful camera with the Summicron 35 f/2. Well worth the wait. I know Leica is not for many, but it is about the experience and beautiful photographs.

The M10 was exactly what I sought in a camera (the Canon D5 drove me crazy) and I feel that I am making the photograph, not the camera. I shoot manual and need no camera settings. As compared to the M-E, the one addition I do like is the "live view" when I occasionally need it. I do not regret the choice! Thanks for asking.

    I own a Leica R4s. I have about $800 US into it, complete with CLA and and a 50mm Summicron. What this camera does is to make me think. To plan out my shots. To concentrate on aperture and shutter speed. ISO is dependent on the film choice. I don't need autofocus, white balance, auto-winders with this camera. I'll go to my 5D4 for that. This camera is just plain fun and satisfying. It brings me back to what photography was and is to me.

    Good discussion. Too bad they are so expensive but like Jordan said, where else are you going to get a manual focus, full frame rangefinder? What makes the M so great is the fact it’s so simple. It forces the user to understand shutter speed, aperture and ISO. Understanding those three simple things will make you a much better photographer. I’d love to own an M sometime. BTW, there are a huge number of good inexpensive third-party M mount lenses available which can make the total cost of system ownership similar to other full-frame systems.

I have a quite bad paycheck compared to the standard here, it’s all about priorities, if you want/need wide to tele-zoom a M-series is not for you. I almost only used my 35mm f1.4 so an M10 with a 50 1.4 was a perfect start! Next move is to buy a used Leica summicron 50mm, if that happens this year, or next year 🤷‍♂️ If you want a Leica, and live in a wealthy country, it’s up to you, what you want and how you prioritize. If you’re not ready to give up a speedy sony or canon, then don’t blame a company that doesn’t go with the “made in china” race. You cant compare a “made in germany” company with a “made in china”-one. It’s a big different. And show me a sony that’s made in brass 🤷‍♂️ if spec is more important than a relationship with your gadget, then go with the sony, it will always be better on paper. But I wouldn’t change my leica m10 for a sony A7xxx any day in the week :)

I'd say the same for Nikon, Sony, Canon and others on long waits for new products, and Jan to Mar isn't bad at all for a hot new product. (Ask a Z9 or Z 100-400mm buyer). The Q2 was available right away. I've got a few top demand lenses and were available so I'm not sure it is true right now that there are long delays. Yes, they are moving their U.S. location so some things are now end of July, but that's a temporary and beneficial move. Your other points are right on and there is no perfect camera system. you can argue at Leica's price point they should be the exception, but remember there are other factors such as handmade, zero tolerance QA, metal lenses and such that drive those prices.

    A good argument towards the end, which raises an interesting philosophical debate. Leica are perceived as niche products, but are they really niche in terms of functionality? Even though they are far beyond my budget, thus I have no actual experience with them, the only area the M series seem to suffer is action photography, for which they would be probably unsuitable. The modern photographer proposes the idea that not being automated in many aspects makes it niche and more difficult to work with. Leica's philosophy proposes that because it is simpler, it is easier to work with and this argument is hard to defeat. The modern photographer (me included and I fought really hard to get rid of this habit) has a 'mistaken' perception of what light meters do and how they work, and most exposure problems come for this. Light meters are programmed to turn the overall light in your composition to a particular shade of gray. This is why when you shoot a white composition it always turns out underexposed. Same with black subjects where they turn out overexposed. So the question is not whether your light meter is good enough, but only whether you know WHERE to meter for your frame and composition. Aperture priority and shutter priority (and any other automated exposure mode) only work well when the lighting in your frame is even like in overcast days. Shooting in manual most of the time will certainly enable you to obtain correct exposure AND imprint your creative idea without compromises, or with compromises in areas which do not matter for your composition. In some cases it is easy e.g. sunny 16 rule: when it is sunny with an f/16 aperture set your shutter to the same number as your ISO. If you want a different aperture account for the stop difference in your shutter speed or ISO. This works anywhere regardless of whether you're shooting in the street or in the snow where your meter will 100% of the time not expose your shot properly. If your subject is backlit, move in close and fill the frame with the subject to meter. Other times you meter the sky. In other cases it is not as easy, e.g. you may need to use fill flash. There are other things to discover e.g. backlight improves contrast in macro, and front light produces flatter results. BUT think about it. The only 2 main elements in manual mode regarding your exposure are a) deliberate aperture and shutter speed choice as concerns the creative part, and b) knowing WHERE to meter in your frame, and where to focus concerning the technical part and the DOF. All these can be learned by trial and error, by reviewing other people's work, and by reading books from experienced photographers. People think that automated modes get rid of these problems for you, but this is not true at all. Automatic exposure just makes results more random. If you shoot with wrong settings your result will be crap 95% of the time. Automated modes reduce this to like maybe 70-80% nowadays. If you shoot with proper settings, your result will be good 100% of the time. So an interesting debate in the end is whether all this automation has actually helped elevate your level of photography and in my experience the answer is no. Especially as an amateur shooter (and not photographer) the worst thing that happened to me was trying to figure out how to use all these automated modes, together with exposure compensation to what I wanted, where all I needed was manual mode. This wastes so much time and you think what am I doing wrong? Or you may even believe this is how it must be, maybe all photographers take 80% of their pictures wrong. Well, mate, you're not 'thinking' photography, and you're not taking the pictures you let the camera take them. You know little about light, and even less about capturing it. I wish I had someone to tell me that early on. If you have time to think about exposure compensation then you have time to shoot in manual mode. Manual mode + a flash unit with remote mode + travel tripod is all you need to produce sharper images, better lit images, AND more deliberate compositions in 99% of situations. You don't even need fast lenses unless you are shooting indoors at low light and can't use a slow shutter. At full-frame, any lens that can do f/4-5.6 is good enough for pretty much any outdoors situation including portraits, as long as it is good quality glass. Most pros who travel shoot with lenses like e.g. the Nikon 70-300 f/4-5.6 or 24-120 f/4 because they are compact, thus they can handle them easily and can carry them around all day. They make spectacular pictures. The biggest enemy of the photographer in the end is their own self and especially that self who worries about things that don't really matter. Is this lens f/2.8 or f/4? Which lens is sharper? What about diffusion at higher apertures? Which camera meters highlights better? Does it have a highlight metering mode? Who cares? If you worry about all these things life is pretty difficult. All modern mid-range and above lenses are sharp enough. Diffraction hasn't been a real problem since like the late 80's. If you need to use f/22 and focus at 1m, you do it. All on-camera light meters work with the same principle. There is some variation, but no light meter can fix the problems caused by metering at the wrong place. 99% of beautiful photos are all about proper, deliberate technique and beautiful ideas. So, is Leica M a niche product? Hell no, I'd buy one instantly if I had the money.

    One interesting side of Jordan’s bad cop role is that the criticism is common among many reviews I have seen. With the suggestions I have the impression all cameras would be similar/identical if implemented 😀 Thinking of his points on the M

    I love Leica and used them since the 70’s and owned too many Leica cameras and lenses . Today I still has M Monochrom, M10 , Q , Q Monochrom and the disappointment CL which I bought for my wife because of small and light camera . But currently I don’t see the newer Leica that really worth for the price you pay .

    You tease us with that brief screenshot of the Pixii website - I'd really wanna see you cover the camera at some point.

    Chris, I just don’t get how the redesign of the bottom plate is better in any way. The only argument of merit I’ve heard is that apparently more people than I would have guessed, LOSE the bottom plate and they are super expensive to replace.

    It's faster to change the battery, the USB functionality is useful. As mentioned, nothing to lose or drop, or replace. Better use of limited space. Definitely not nearly as cool, and the tactile appeal is missing, but from a pragmatic standpoint, it's the right way to go.

    @@niccollsvideo Dammit, and I'm known for being ultra-pragmatic. :P. I guess being that I almost never use Live View, quick changing the battery, having a bigger battery or using the USB was worth the clean and tactile design of the bottom plate. I originally thought removing the bottom plate was going to improve weather sealing, and that I'd be all for. But now you have me intrigued....you should do a "how quickly can I change the battery between an older M and the M11"...it would be KZread GOLD watching you swap them out like an F1 tire change! :D

    I borrowed a brand new M11 with 35mm lens a few days ago. I wanted to see what was so different about Leica and the always talked about ' Leica Look'. I have compared very detailed shots of the new M11, a Sony A7iii and Fujifilm XPro3. Aside from resolution, i seriously cannot fathom the extra $10000 price tag for the Leica. Sure the image is much higher in megapixels, but honestly all 3 cameras produced roughly the same quality photo. I appreciate that people like to purchase high end brands as they like prestige gear, but......i do not see it worth it. For anyone stuck on the fence about getting a Leica camera, I can honestly say that if you have the money do what you want. i have the money to purchase a few of these M11's but to be brutally honest I cannot see the any reason aside from image status to own one. i have tested dynamic range and processed the photos like any normal consumer would and I would bet nobody reading this could determine which camera made which photo. Note to newcomers, DO NOT get caught up in the leica hype. Like all other mirrorless bodies, they are just sensors and a lens like any other mirrorless camera. After shelling out $10,000 plus for a leica, you are kidding yourself if you think your photos are superior to anything else a fifth the price on the market.Sure if leica gave me a camera i would take it, but i am in no way paying that much money for something that delivers image quality on par with much much cheaper brands. Dont believe me?......rent one and see for yourself. I have leica raws I could tell you came from a sony a7iv and you would believe me. KZreadrs seem to pushing the Q2 at the moment, avoid it at all costs. You are not getting a camera that is superior in any way. Leica cameras do have once strength that none of the other brands have yet to achieve. Their bodies and lens drain your wallets very quickly with no noticeable benefit to the owner. Maintenance on leica is insanely offensive too along with accessories. I dare you to prove me wrong.

    They really do make the most beautiful cameras and lenses. But except for the SL, I personally find the handling to be unpleasant. I tried the Q2 with a grip and although it was much improved it still wasn’t amazing. Still worth going to a store and try them out. They’re pure beauty!

    Taken with S prime Len’s file look complete difference than L mount Len’s on SL. It is a complete different experience. But it focus is slow compare to modern standard. But the picture is very very good. This is properly the new pre S4 medium format look. S Len’s glass is the best among Leica in making. It is creamy but details shadow, and sometime even out of focus shot look better than in focus.
