Leica Q2 Monochrom | OMG! 😍

Check out my Street Photography zines & Lightroom Color Profiles: 👉 bit.ly/3QrSoq1
Just recently Leica announced the brand new Leica Q2 Monochrom and I was very intrigued. Luckily, a friend of mine picked one up and I borrowed his camera for two days. The only problem was that I liked the camera so much that I couldn't resist and got one for myself. In this video I give you my first impression of the camera and a proper review will follow after giving it a proper go for a couple of weeks.
See you in the next one! :)

I'm in LOVE with my Q2, but have many conversations with myself about this camera. I convert about 70% of my shots to b&w, BUT when I keep in color, the images kick ass... so yeah, I think I will just lust after this one for a while still. Excellent lesson in the use of color filters! Thank you!!

Thank you very much! Your friend is incredibly patient, I'm so impressed! This camera is amazing, there's nothing like a true monochrome. Now I'm not a huge fan of the 28mm, I prefer the 35mm but with such a huge definition, cropping is OK and I can live with it. The red filter sure helps too but it does change a lot of things and I'd love to see another video, maybe in different light conditions, without the filters in order to get a better idea of what the sensor really does. Maybe later? Have fun and thanks again!

The portraits look damn good as well, so, congrats for buying the Q2M! I have to admit that I was a little bit tempted myself. But then again I told myself, “hey, come on, you can always load one of your analog cameras with some bnw film from Kodak, Ilford or Fujifilm, so calm down the GAS😇😆!”. Hi Robin, loved that you shared filter effects. I’ve been playing with yellow one with my M10 Monochrome and it helps increasing overall contrast a bit + lightly darkening skyes, but I was wondering about if I’d see a much higher effect with an Orange filter, especially for portraits... I’m not considering red filter right now because of focusing issue on Leica M, I guess that incorporating the Visio flex EVF would solve that mostly... Thanks for your feedback!

The red and orange filter are awesome for landscape as long no person are in it. Unfortunately, if someone has blueish eyes, not only the sky will become black, those persons are turned into black eyed demons 😅. A good compromise is the yellow filter, buildings already pop out, sky and clouds gets a little bit more contrast, helps enormous in post and skin tones are subtle cleaned up. With the Monochrom models you can easily underexpose 1 stop at least, that turns the skies even more black and it is zero problem to recover the details in non sky shadows in post.

Just a personal point of view but maybe something to consider. The Red filter is destroying any tonality in her lips and giving a bit more plastic feel to the skin. Orange is the same but to a lesser extent. Give a try to a regular old K2 filter or even a Yellow green. The K2 was the standard contrast filter in N. America and I believe the YG was the standard filter in Europe. I personally prefer the YG because it gives better texture and gives a nice rich look to lips. I reserve red or orange for architectural stuff. Always love your channel, so just offering an honest observation.

  • @DonFather

As you know, it's the exact same camera, but with an entirely different sensor. But if you want super clean B&W photos that you can never achieve with the Q2, then this is it. However, I like some fine grain in my photos, so the monochrome is not for me.

  • @slickhatter9812

Unfortunately it does specially low light and tones variations still q2 is fantastic but you can’t beat the monochrome in black and white with the q2 and will always feel something is missing but keep in mind there is no color channels so the workflow is as well different but it is a beast in low light really

You should try for yourself, it is a famous trick used by beauty photographers from the film era, as opposed to orange filter which increases contrast it makes the reds less dense and so the skin looks more « pure » After, you do what you want ;)

The Leica Q monochrome looks very cool, but I personally fail to grasp the value of a digital camera that is dedicated only to black and white. In fact for me it represents so much money, that I preferred to use it for something else. To travel or buy photography books.

It's so confusing. I want to buy one -- I have the money to do it -- I just need the reason. I think in high ISO situations and high contrast -- its better with less noise and a sharper image than my Sony A7RIII converting color to B&W in Lightroom. But in other situations -- it requires a commitment or decision to take one or two cameras on outings that are situational and non-repetitive. I travel for adventure around the world on a motorcycle. I only get to see a remote village once in the strangest parts of the world once -- Its so hard to commit to only BW if I only get one shot in these cool locations. Yikes, wish it was easy.

Paco, I use an X100F mostly to shoot black & white, and I find this camera fascinating. I assume that with the larger sensor, image stabilization, and no color filter that it should get several stops of light advantage over the X100F. I would love to see that comparison. How do you find the Q compared to your experience with the X100F?

  • @pacoedw

    @pacoedw

    3 жыл бұрын

@@sc0ttmagoon I've been a Fuji user since the x100s, and I love it; but I couldn't get used to the focus by wire. I really love the manual focusing in the Q, and the lens is superb, lightyears ahead of Fuji. I know this is the Leica cliché, but the experience of shooting with it is even closer to the good ol'days of film, simple and quick. I'd love to have the extra megapixels from the Q2 to crop more if needed, but so far the Q is the only camera I carry with me, despite being bigger and heavier than the x100f.
