After shooting the Leica Q2 Monochrom for almost a year, it's about time to share with you my opinion and my user experience about the camera. It's been a hell of a ride and I enjoyed every second of it. If you have seen my videos with the Q2 Monochrom you can probably already tell that I am loving it to bits. The original Q has been my favorite digital camera ever and this one is now my number one. Even though it's lacking the ability to shoot color. It's pushing the boundaries and I can do things that weren't possible with the og Q.

I have the M10 Monochrom, and what amazes me with these monochrome sensors is how flexible they are for editing at high ISO. I was editing an image at ISO 40,000 recently, and it was only at the end that I checked the ISO I had been working at - I thought I had been working with a file that was around ISO 4,000! (and it was 1 1/3 stops underexposed)!

Great, legit review...thanks for posting up...I subscribed to your channel. For the last 5 years I have been shooting Sony and recently integrated the Fujifilm GFX100S into my workflow and luv the high res cropping. Also, I luved the Fujifilm menu system so I bought the X100V that you mentioned. OMG....what a fun travel camera! So, with your review I see this Q2 Monochrom as my next discreet travel camera. I totally agree with your opinion that having less options provides a more attuned shooting experience which I learned with the X100V.

What you need to know is that Leica first worked on the lens and then developed the body around the lens. This 28mm is incredible at 1.7 even at full aperture we can see what is happening outside the sharpness zone, we can recognize a face even far from the sharpness zone. For the monochrome model, the sensor has no red-green-blue pixels, hence a large gray scale compared to a color sensor.

the one reason i would pick the q2-m over the m10-m is you get to see the live world in black and white in real time. apart from helping with exposure, tones and contrast, i just like looking at the world in black and white. atleast for a little while.

Quick question, the photo at 4:27 - that isn't straight out of the dng file but rather a lot of post production pulling up shadows or or or? Its just absolutely fantastic. If I thought I could somewhat routinely see that kind of dynamic range in low light, I might be very interested!

  • @stuartdorman128

Spot on with your commentary, Robin, and thanks for your photo recap in so many locations. I loved how I was able to pick up my Q2M and start shooting, without spending a moment studying instruction manuals or videos - it's that intuitive. I always grab this over my M10-R when the light is low, because I know I can push the Q2M beyond the limits of any other camera I've owned, and I don't have to worry about colour shift with the monochrom sensor. I missed some (potentially) great photos in Monterrey because the Q2M switched from Photo to Video - I puzzled for an hour before I saw I changed it in the quick menu when I was trying to set exposure compensation. But aside from that, zero complaints. It's been amazing in the 7 months since I bought it. I only wish I'd been able to pick one up before I travelled south to Mexico last December. I tend to leave the 1/2 case at home in favour of the hand grip, and finally bit the bullet to get one for my M10-R.

That AFC tracking thing at 12:52 , I heard the tracking/AFC algorithm also uses the colour information on the Q2, the Monochrom can’t do that, so it doesn’t work as expected. I don’t have one myself, maybe they fixed it meanwhile in a firmware upgrade. The Q3 has phase detect, the Q3 Monochrom will most probably has it also. Besides, concerning the higher price of the Monochrom versions, it’s like you already said, lower production batch counts. The Q2 Monochrom has also a completely new designed sensor for its purpose, not only the Bayer layer removed. Because of the fixed focal length Leica made a special micro lens design, meaning each of the 47.3 million effective pixels (aka light sensors) have its own micro lens ensuring the light falls perpendicular on each single one what is a whole other angle at the edges as in the centre of the sensor.

To add to the list of minor gripes, I think the proximity sensor that activates the EVF (in auto mode) is far too sensitive. It activates too readily, and then I have to exaggeratedly point it away from myself to get the rear panel to come back on. I have a function button set to switch displays, but that’s clumsy as well, because it cycles through too many modes. I’d rather it just toggled between EVF and LCD.

I bought one because I love BW images. My home is littered with mostly those shots by myself and masters. Historically like many people, I shoot with say Sony A7Rxxx and then in Lightroom convert to BW when on the road. I wanted to force myself to only shoot with no choice so hence the Leica Q2M. I still struggle with the feeling like I am missing moments and choices - both with a fixed lens and color opportunities. An active or affluent life is about choices for sure -- but a simple wholesome equally or more happy life is the opposite. The camera takes life back to a simpler time -- this is how I would describe it and why I bought it. Can 95%+ people tell the difference in images between Sony converted and Leica Q2M? I say no. I would conclude by saying -- if you want to learn something new -- how to see a situation and shoot in BW, then there is no better tool for this. If you are not committed -- A Sony A7RIV is the answer for the same price with lenses.

Yes, it's a Leica one and I wouldn't recommend it. For the money it's not great and I would rather recommend a Oberwerth half case. I've just uploaded a video about their brand new Q3 case but the Q2 ones are great too. The discount code SirRobin also works for those. With that you'll save 10% if you order one on Oberwerth's website. 👍

  • @Photoandcargeek
    @Photoandcargeek2 жыл бұрын

I seriously doubt that Leica developed a sensor for b&w, I think they took their existing sensor and removed the colour filters and then modified the image processing part of the software... And probably modified the software they already developed for the Leica M Monochrome so that it would work with the Q2. And if it is really a new sensor, they are likely to be able to add a colour filter for their next colour camera. As a photographer, owner of Leica M film cameras I grew up seeing used by my father and uncles (with medium formats etc), I understand the appeal of Leica but shoot with Canon cameras unless I want some of the old fashion charm of a Leica on a casual walk or weekend. And I also love B&W photography but, my questions are: why pay Leica prices when the others are as good or better (sorry I am a scientifically trained objective photographer)? And why a black and white camera when you can get almost the same quality from colour converted to black and white? And, just as a disclaimer I know that there are some noise and sensitivity advantages to not having colour filters (and image processing is much easier as there is no degaussing) and I have been tempted to buy one of these b&w cameras (Nokia or Leica) but have refrained to because I can get very very close to the quality by processing my colour images.

From what I understand the sensor on the Q2 Monochrom is the same as the Q2 but without the color array filter, there was no added development, so the price isn't justified. It is more expensive for the same reason that Leicas in general are expensive, exclusivity, period. I can understand why a lens can cost substantially more than another, but in this case the lens is the same as the Q2. The Q2 Monochrom makes no sense to me at this price point. Also it seems that you cannot disable the touch screen?

I have a problem where I always first see and focus on colors. I find it difficult to focus on other elements of photos. So I made my camera to process the images into b&w so I'm forced to see in b&w while shooting. The color info is still there in the raw file if I absolutely need it. I feel this is better than having pure mono sensor where you never can get the colors.

I like the capability of this camera and I have seen stunning results but I despise street photography (people) and that is usually what the images promoting this rig consist of. There are not "so many" digital cameras that shoot exclusively B&W. There is Leica. No Fuji, no Nikon, no Canon. If the demand was there certainly there would be an XT-4 M or even a Z Fc M - cameras which would still be relatively affordable after absorbing the the cost of a low volume sensor.

You people need to educated your self... For example: No monochrome camera can deliver B/W pix as much qualitative as color image can deliver...It is become know knowledge among us professional photographer, or simple any one who is knowledgeable in photography do know it... Leica simply cash on your low knowledge and probably laughing there serf to the bank... You pay around $7000 for monochrome Leica camera that you can have better results from any colour camera including point and shoot type... I give you minimum info that you need to have to know what is good image. In B/W photography you need to have detail in highlight aria of images and equally important to have detail in shadow area... Leica does not have capability in digital B/W photography to provide such details... it is that simple...

Almost 6,000 dollars, for a camera that has less than 1,000 dollars worth of tech inside it... Just because it's ''Leica.'' LOL! This camera body, has the same tech you would find in any 1,000 dollar ''enthusiast'' camera bodies from other manufacturers and yet it costs 5 times that! Ridiculous and shameless pricing! Imagine paying close to 6,000 dollars for a camera that: has no Eye AF, no animal AF, no vehicle AF, no top LCD, has only 1/2000s mechanical shutter, has no focus bracketing, no focus stacking, no anti-flicker, no flash-sync port, no low-pass filter, non-BSI sensor it's just a regular CMOS sensor it's not even a stacked CMOS sensor, has only 1 card slot, has a fixed (and terrible) LCD, has a cheapo viewfinder, has only 49 focus points, terrible high ISO imaging and so on and so forth... A 6,000 dollar camera that lacks hardware and tech that even newer 300 dollar point-and-shoot cameras have! That's just ridiculous and completely shameless from Leica. For that amount of money, you can get a GFX 100s, GFX50s, R3, Z9, a1, D6, 1DXlll, R5 and so on, or even some Hasselblad camera bodies... Whoever bought this camera got scammed...

@@nogerboher5266 A1, R3, Z9, R5, A9ll they all cost more than 2.500, and yes, they have more tech than this Q2 monochrome but they aren´t as small, lightweight and inspirational. I have also a GFX50s II, an A7RIII and a Lumix S5 for work but the only one I really enjoy shooting is the Q2 mono because its an unique experience. You said that it has a bad EVF, this is not true, its one of the best in the market, only the A1 or Z9 EVF can give better performance but if you want to have those cameras you should pay a lot more than for a Leica Q2 and speaking only about the body! The Q2 mono has a very decent AF, its weather resistant, it has image stabilization, its sensor is a MP beast for crops, its lens is one of the best 28mm in the market if not the best, its EVF is magic, its simplicily makes photograghy a joy. Not everything is to have the last technology in this world. And I don´t know why yo get mad about Leica´s AF and suggest to buy a Medium Format camera where focus in the slowest thing possible.

@@blancoviejo3703 Oh my god... Once again... The point is not about everything having the latest technology. It's about Leica NOT HAVING ANYTHING IN THE FIRST PLACE, let alone latest technology - AND THEN ASKING 8,000 EUR (and much more for some of their cameras) for a camera body that LITERALLY only has 2 buttons and a viewfinder! THAT is the point here. Leica is a money grab, hipster show-off brand/manufacturer and to say it once again; the reason why people hate Leica is not because their cameras lack technology, it's because their cameras lack technology AND THEY COST AS MUCH AS SOME MEDIUM FORMAT BODIES AND BEST CAMERAS ON THE MARKET! That's why people hate Leica. Nobody would have an issue with a Leica camera costing 800-1,500 EUR because that's how much their cameras are actually worth based on their hardware and parts. But asking 6,500 EUR for a camera that HAS LESS to offer than a 900-1,000 EUR Canon, Sony, Nikon or Fuji entry level camera? Yeah, that's called pure idiocy and shamelessness. On top of the 1,500 EUR that the camera costs, you're basically, essentially paying 5,000 EUR for the ''Leica'' logo. And don't crap me or anyone else with the ''it's the experience'' bull crap. Most if not all new mirrorless cameras are either the same size or smaller than Leica cameras, with better ergonomics, better button layout, more buttons, more options, better build quality, better and prettier design (but that's subjective, yes) and so on... So at this point, all Leica has to offer is their name. Speaking of what Leica has to offer, did you see the new Sony point and shot camera? That little crappy thing LITERALLY and I mean QUITE LITERALLY has more to offer than ANY Leica camera EVER MADE, aside from a high MP FF sensor. If you put a 50MP FF sensor on it, it would be better than ANY Leica camera on the market, at only one sixth the price!
