I really like the new mechanics to open the wings to attack position. Much better than rubber bands. For $50? I’m in.

I dig the engineering that went into designing the wing mechanism for sure, I'm just not crazy about how visible it is right in the middle of the set.

Actually those “wings” are called s foils 🤓🤓🤓

I have this version and after modding the nose, adding parts to cover the technic bricks, lowering R2 by one plate, moving the launchers from the wings under the belly, giving them retractable landing gears, adding more smooth tiles, this set actually looks pretty cool.

Now if only official LEGO sets didn't extensive modifications before looking pretty cool. I guess the ability to make LEGO your own is part of the fun in the first place though.

Did the same only minutes ago and super happy with this set. Followed a couple mod videos, cockpit and technic cover. It’s our only Xwing but I think it’s a great one!

Got this set for £30. Spent £5 and brick link and have a great looking x wing. Can’t fault the value.

I just bought it. Even though it lacks detail, I'm extremely happy I could finally afford one + the new TIE for the same price as the old xwing, as the last few x-wings were too overpriced! That being said, landing gear could have been easily made to retract and it is a slight disappointment.

I think this was exactly Lego's goal for these sets. Let people get 2 sets for the same price they would have paid for 1 last year. It seems to be working because these new Star Wars sets seem to be sold out everywhere.

@@benDover-qo7mw looking back it's not that bad. I fixed the landing gear problem with a few extra pieces and nothing like 4 grey 2x1 plates to add detail to engines. Overall love it! Actually believe it is more accurate than the 90€ set one with these small mods

@@benDover-qo7mw the nose is the most accurate version by far, it's also more to scale with the figs, the others look gigantic next to them

It would be a good first X-wing to own for the price.

This is a good set and has potential for changes and mods. I love how this is the first set that doesn't use rubber bands for the wings. Also coming from the 1999 version to this one is a pretty nice leap in design.

X-Wings have definitely come a long way that's for sure. I dig this size but I'm curious if future versions of this ship will stay around this size or go back to the bigger versions.

I would say its a good compromise between aesthetic, design, and size. They could redesign it for the future. Of course you could ignore official releases and build MOCs if you don't want to wait for new versions or dislike the new designs. I bought this one to ease back into building Lego before I start building MOCs (my own custom sets, if you are unfamiliar with the term).

I’m 20 and for some reason my little brother got me the new one for my birthday, it reminds me of the time when I used to play with my friend’s 2012 set. It’s really cool that you can afford the new one when the old ones cost over £170

Casually adding in some criticism for the last Jedi while talking about too many stickers made me laugh out loud. And by laugh out loud I mean I chuckled quietly to myself. Good video man.

This set actually snapped back together really easily. Just the wings and a couple engines popped off so the damage was minimal 😅

Yeah I'm partial to the slightly older sets but I like this smaller version more as time goes on.

The intro banter, the John tributes, the salt over Rey Palpatine and Holdo 😂 The wing mechanism looks really cool to me. Worth the aesthetic sacrifice to not have the rubber bands.

I have to be honest I really like the new technic built wing mechanism even though it kinda ruins the look of the to half of the x-wing, because on the old version the rubber bands used to flex and bend if you kept the x-wing in attack position so when you would close the wings back up they just droop down and don’t look good, which is sad because the x-wings look better in attack position in my opinion but it sucks that they wings wouldn’t close properly, so I like the new one for the fact that there’s no rubber bands on it

I'm with you for the most part, I just wish it was hidden a little better. There also isn't any way to "lock" these wings open either, they just kind of drift closed with gravity now. It's not terrible considering the set size and price.

@@JoshBuildsStuff I don’t own the set, (and I am still waiting for the sets I ordered on Jan first to arrive) so I didn’t know that you couldn’t lock the wings in position, that really sucks. But I agree with what you said about wishing there could be a better way to hide the mechanism.

I’m ever a fan of rubber bands. They can degrade over time and yes, they bend the wings.

I think the high sticker usage on this was a make up for them not using any on the TIE or Trouble on Tattooine sets hahaha but love the review!

Yeah, I think Lego recognizes that we don't love stickers but they'll still do it when a set needs extra details like this one.

Yeah I'm on the fence with these ships. On one hand I'm glad they're cheaper, on the other I wish they were bigger and more detailed but that would mean they would be more expensive. Also Rey Palpatine... ridiculous.

Backview of the 2012 version is completely wrong and the wing mechanism is abysmal. With some mods, 2021 could be excellent.

Yeah, it's tough to compare because the new ship almost feels like a different class of ship than the old one. LEGO was definitely trying something new with these and I think they're appealing in some aspects and miss the mark on others.
