LEGO Bionicle: The Legend of Mata Nui was being developed by Saffire Corporation, and was made as a PC game with later plans of porting the game to the Nintendo GameCube. The title would have directly taken place after the events of LEGO Bionicle: Quest for the Toa for the Game Boy Advance (GBA), which was also made by Saffire. The game was cancelled after new management was brought in at the LEGO company, who opted instead to work with Argonaur Games to create BIONICLE: The Game, which released not only on the PC and GameCube, but also on the PlayStation 2 (PS2) and Xbox.

-A plethora of dedicated BIONICLE fans spend 17 years searching for a beta copy of this game, finally manage to dig up an outdated alpha copy. -Some KZreadr interviews the ex devs a few years later and gets the final build given to him as a gift with no hassle. Welp.

Oh man. Bionicles was huge. Interesting fact about the series. The Bionicle's Franchise through a unique marketing of quality deep lore, story-telling and world-building rivaling something like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, something that's rarely, if ever, done with toy franchises at the time, manage to save the Lego Company from a financial crisis and went a strong 10 years. Believe it or not, that's pretty amazing for a toy series as most toys are just seen as fads.

I've tried to avoid videos on this game because I wanted to save my reactions for the BioMedia Project remaster and record it but this video looked too good to pass up. I always knew this game was intended to be cannon, but haddn't heard much about the actual story elements within it. Hearing it now, I've spotted a few things that don't match up with cannon: Not all the Toa have grappling hooks. Gali had hooks in her Mata form, and Pohatu had climbing hooks in his Nuva form from late 2002, and I don't remember them ever using them as grapples. The Toa didn't meet each other 1 by 1. Gali, Tahu, Onua, and Lewa all met up under unkown circumstances, Pohatu and Kopaka met up, then Pohatu and Kopaka found the other four. The Toa didn't *give* each other mask powers, each of them had to find their own set of masks. Sometimes characters would collect masks for each other, but they needed each person to have one rather than share (up until Nuva phase) The Toa's masks don't magically turn into Golden Masks when the apporach Kini Nui (a lot of early BIONICLE games depict this, but it's not the case.) They had to give all 6 of their Great Masks to statues at Kini Nui, the masks melted into the statue and then the Golden Masks appeared on the statues' faces. The Tales of the Toa book mentions a room with six surrounding chambers each embowed with an element surrounding the Manas room similar to the final level jumping puzzles you described, but the Toa only briefly enter the water on to fight the Manas and never bother with the others. Greg Farsthey (the main writer of the books) has had a particular style when it comes to cannonizing things. When it comes to wierd games like this his response is usually "Rahi and vehicles are cannon, story is not." Combine that with the fact that the Tales of the Toa book, Tales of the Tohuhnga videogame, the Mata Nui Online Game, and the first few comics give absolutley no indication how the Toa found the Makoki stones and I'd say the Diciples of Makuta are probably cannon. I mean, Greg has confirmed the Fikou Nui is cannon and that's from this! Cool to see the Toa using all 12 Masks in this. In the books it's implied they only had to collect the 6 Great Masks, while in MNOG it's implied they had to collect all 6 Great and all 6 Noble. The 12 Masks interpritation has been regarded as cannon, but I suppose this *could* be used as further proof of it. Also, I never thought I'd see Pohatu ride a Kane Ra. That's freakin' adorable!

I had a game cube Bionicle game and it looked pretty similar to waht I have seen of this one so far Edit seeing the gba video, I remember I had that one too 2nd edit, some things do look different, this version looks more open than the released version, in the released version, the ice stages in particular, were very linear, and forward movement is forced you can only controll left right and speed. The magma levels were similar but in a volcano instead of on a mountian Edit the 3rd, it was the Argonauts game....

J2K Honestly, the game is not that interesting. It's a side scroller and the whole purpose is to collect masks. There's no other goal except getting a high score. However, as a kid I would watch again and again the promotional cut scenes (some of them were in this video), listen to the lore and look at the artwork. A couple of years after that, I had my brother search for the actual game but the only thing he found was the Argonaut version which is very different. Seriously though if people are interested I can totally upload the contents of the disk so that anyone can see for themselves

Also posted on BZPower: Watching these kinds of "lost media" videos always makes me feel sad somehow. Maybe because most of them ultimately start with someone having a genuine creative spark, and how tragic it can be for an aspiring creator to not be able to show others their ideas. It's even more depressing for me to watch this, me being a lifelong BIONICLE fan and having felt the mysterious allure of this game most of my life. Still, it does bring me a sense of closure, and the last segment about the staff's sense of humor was a fun bit to end on. Also, I wonder how BIONICLE must seem to someone who hasn't grown up with it.

It annoyed me that they didn't make movies about Voya, Mahri or Karda Nui and skipped straight on to Bara Magna with no context, a different animation style, and no returning music...then ended it on a sequel hook and just let the comics and serials finish it off. Now I'm getting angry again after 8 years of no Bionicle.

I read all the Bionicle books in the library, which was a pretty small amount. There was the final book of the original series that I wanted to read really badly but the library never got it. So, I guess when I said the next book I meant the final book. It was kinda crushing for it to end so anticlimactically, I went on to read other books... Or maybe I was too lazy to find it elsewhere and didn't feel like going to a real library. xp

13:57 - I didn't think the Mask of Time was going to get brought up. I was planning to mention it anyway. I was actually the one who gave them the idea for that mask. When Bionicle was still pretty new, and before they moved on to the second generation of toys when the Toa were given new designs, they had a contest on their official website. The contest gave a brief story prompt, with the Toa entering a mysterious cave where they hear strange sounds. Those entering the contest were asked to draw and describe what it was that the Toa found inside the cave. What I submitted was a drawing of Makuta, who was guarding a mask. My description explained that Makuta had used this Mask of Time to bring himself back to life after being defeated by the Toa. They actually sent me a physical copy of the mask, although I haven't been able to find it. The design they used was actually very different from the one I drew. Mine had tentacal-like extensions on the sides of the mask. I saw that they had made use of the mask in the comics (which I had early access to, on a portion of the site for some exclusive club I can't remember the name of), but I had no idea if they had plans to distribute the mask to the public. I wonder, since the game was cancelled, if my copy is the only Mask of Time released to the public.

  • @The_AGL_Group

    @The_AGL_Group

Well... no. The Kanohi Vahi: Mask of Time was the first mask design finalized - it’s in a lot of promo art if you look it up. The mask cast in orange was meant to be released with the game, but it finally got a broader release in gold with limited-edition Vahki sets in 2004, where it had relevance to that year’s movie.

  • @TheZeroNeonix

All I know is I submitted my mask design in a contest, and I got some stuff for winning. I got the mask, as mentioned before, and access to the Proto Club (I think is what it was called). I was supposed to get a pair of shoes, but I never got them. I figure I was probably older than the age range they were going for, so they didn't have my size.

  • @claudiobizama5603

Oh yeah that contest. Many received the mask of time as a reward. The orange mask of time was molded and ready to ship with the game before it's cancellation. So they had a bunch of masks without any distribution. So it was commonly gifted trough promotions and contests. It appeared on the comic and animations on 2003 and the movie of 2004.

I was legitimately confused as to that design being a "mask" in the Metru Nui movie and thought it was unfinished, especially in a franchise where everyone's basically wearing full-face masks. Made sense to me considering the main character couldn't beat Makuta even with it.

Thank you so much for bringing this to the public like this. I had my eyes on this game so much as a kid, and when I eventually got the Bionicle Game that DID release, I was rather confused and a little upset as to where all the cool Toa Mata stuff had gone. I never realised the two were different games at the time. I never stopped loving this era of Bionicle. When I was old enough to be working and earning money, I went out and bought a couple of the figures they featured in this game, because I never got to own them for real. And they're now the only two Bionicle toys that I still have unpacked and on display. Being able to play this game, after all these years... man, this fills a hole in my childhood that has been there for too long.

Thanks so much for covering this. I still remember my friends and I being super hyped for this when I was probably 10-ish and always wondering for the years immediately after 2001 what happened to it. It was incredibly disappointing when we found it out it was never going to come out because what little footage there was of it in trailers on the mini CDs from the actual Toa Lego sets looked incredible. And now, to see all the actual gameplay footage in this video, it was seriously everything 10 year old me wanted it to be and even more. Thanks for finally giving a sense of closure to this mystery and the fact that it'll actually be around in some sort of playable form is just incredible!

I remember those times, I still have the Bionicle CD's that came on the cereal boxes, that had some platform mini games and some cinematics, still have some pieces of the figurines still scattered around somewhere. Upon a few years around 2004 I was 10yo and found a copy of Argonaut's Bionicle along with Drome Racers for PC and bought it right away. The game on my eyes was so well polished and so fluid, it's one of the games I really do not regret buying, the story was alright, the cinematics were cool and the soundtrack was really cool(Sometimes I just left the main menu theme play since it was so cool, and it played really well with the cinematic of showing all the heroes in a circle). The final part of the game was with the Toa of Light and for those who watched the Mask of Light movie it was pretty awesome. We are already on 2018, and for those that actually never played the game I really recomend.
