Lego Pneumatic Launch engine

A two cylinder steam engine as used in small boats. The engine is reversable to the boat can go ahead as well as astern. The pneumatic cylinders and switches have been modified to increase the airflow.

    William the butchers son productions it’s a two cycle 2 cylinder so it’s pretty much the equivalent of a 4 cylinder 4 stroke which is awesome

    one cylinder engines require a flywheel. two and more cylinder engines dont need it. this is a two cylinder one

    the cogs at the end help each-other aswell, turning the pistons enough to keep going.

    @@littleraptor9898 well it does sometimes but thats with engines that run more torque and are less stable i think... like traction engines

    @@sonia.bennett1 yes. lego pneumatic tractor engines (out of fake lego motor cylinders) require a flywheel no matter how much cylinders they have.

    Thats not physically possible, infinitely spinning anything is false due to gravity, if you want to see something spin forever then go to space and watch the world turn

    @@ElMatero6 it's not possible because of frictions, not because of gravity. In space there is no friction to stop you from moving. Also, gravity is everywhere, in fact orbits are possible because of it, and in the ISS you’re then in “microgravity” (aka “0G”, but it's really nothing more than free fall) And the comment was about perpetual motion (which is physically impossible), not about friction

    This is a good design. Though I don’t know as much about pneumatic engines as you do, I would like to make a couple suggestions. 1) Move the valve cranks to the main crankshaft. While using separate axles is good for compactness, the engine looks disjointed. Putting the valve eccentrics and drive rods on the same axle makes the engine easier to maintain, and often the arrangement results in a more balanced performance. 2) I would make the frame more rigid to relieve the cylinders of excessive vibration, which leads to a loss of power. This includes moving the throttle valve closer to the base of the engine.

    It runs in one direction well? Remove the stops limiting the "stroke" of the reversing gear move the handle and try to find the position where it runs in the othe direction, then adjust accordingly.

    He means just a 2 cylinder engine was common in small boats, the titanic had a huge engine, with multiple people shoving coal into a bunch of furnaces just to boil the water that was used to power the engine.

    @@unitytwins6652 If I'm not mistaken, the Titanic didn't have a single huge engine but rather 29 boilers connected to three steam-piston engines. It's a system that was very common on warships as well (albeit often scaled up heavily) until the advent of Diesel-electric propulsion at the end of WW2.

    @@FinlayDaG33k It actually used two piston engines, for the side propellers. The exhaust steam from these fed a turbine engine, which powered the center propeller. This used the steam very efficiently, but had the disadvantage of the center propeller being unable to run astern.

    @@KingdaToro Yea, I spotted it. Two steam-piston engines for the the side ones (connected to 29-ish boilers) and the "left-over" steam from the piston engines went into a turbine. It's actually quite clever design.
