LEGO is quietly upgrading all Control+ sets and they'll change the Zetros

Last year I showed you a promo photo of the Zetros that had a weird Technic hub with screws instead of the snap-on lid. That time we received no explanation about it, but the mysterious new hub suddenly appeared in all building instructions, and the Zetros has even more changes!

I think Lego boobed here. A simple addition of one screw to the clip on lid would have met the safety rules, but allowed people to decide to leave it undone or not.

I am really, really pleased that although they have not issued a public statement yet, LEGO is quietly working in the background to fix some common complaints from customers about the Zetros. This is one of two signs that LEGO is paying more attention to customer feedback (the other being the new upcoming 2022 sets- many of them are function-focused, presumably because many fans complained that LEGO Technic was essentially becoming Creator Expert with Technic pieces). Maybe LEGO will fix the lack of B-models too in future sets if they hear many people complaining about that? (Just speculating, but you never know! 😉)

I have a theory: Lego might be trying to save some money on these little things by forcing the designer to exclude them. Now they have to see that it was not worth saving 19 parts per set with such things.

I also appreciate the need to make the battery case safer for children, but I also echo other comments here that a hybrid solution would have been a better approach. Especially one where the screws were optional, or if there was only one screw. Four screws seems a bit of overkill.

As childrens safety was the reason LEGO has used screwed shut compartments before I find that not really to be necessary here either. Its pretty hard for a small child to open those 2 clamps at the same time. Though I would not bet their life on it. So if someone made a fuss about their small child having opened it, its imaginable that LEGO changes things. They are unnerved by most criticism, but not safety afaik. Also, from experience I know LEGO CS is not normally allowed to confirm or deny if a a set is going out of production (since it can give unfair trade advantages). So if information was given there I would not count on it @RacingBrick.

I haven't experienced the rear axle cracking issue which is described on this channel. But for me this happens on the rear axle in a different place: the connection of rear diff small gear with the axle which drives the wheel. Under stress the axle slips and damages the central part of the gear where the axle goes in. I fixed it by using a longer axle for more secure connection and new undamaged gear in the diff.

Coming from a medical device background, I have some understanding of how safety regulations tend to work. Unfortunately, they're often enforced in such a way based on particular regulatory reviewers which have their own opinions on what's safe or not. While it seems like that shouldn't happen, it can, does, and is enforced. So, LEGO is probably playing it safe to make sure no one could claim it's not sufficient and force a major recall and additional reworking. We do the same thing ourselves at work, because such things are so costly, it's better to impose a little inconvenience on customers than spend all that cost and effort in the event someone gets pedantic.

I truly wonder how many (and in what way) kids were harmed by the old screwless hub.....I guess a kid could swallow a battery, which obviously wouldn't be good idea. But even then the batteries would hardly be the biggest danger. Maybe I'm just old, but I keep wondering how I even survived my childhood.... I mean, back then the easiest way to test if there was still some life left in the batteries by putting your tongue against the contacts of the battery box, how have I not been electrocuted by those 4,5 volts?! But seriously, wouldn't it be better to just get rid of the batteries, and instead put in a rechargeable battery that can be charged via USB? So without the need of ever opening that battery compartment? And considering the prices of C+ sets, such a change should easily fit the budget. The one disadvantage would be that such a battery could die after years of use while regular AA cells will probably be around forever, but considering the reliance of C+ on phones and apps, in the long run the availability of replacement batteries will be the least of your problems.

There IS a Control+ hub with removable batteries: the Mindstorm/Spike Hub. And it costs 250€. Not a good idea. Ok, you get 2 ports extra and 25 fancy lights, but other than that they are nearly identical. Which brings me to my major compaint on the 51515/Spike hub: the rechargeable battery container contains 2 18650 cells, which are like 5€ a piece. They should have made a Control+ box, with a USB port (for programming and charging) and a screw battery holder container holding 2 user replacable 18650 cells for 50€. Then you only need to use the screws once every 5-10 years, you can program the hubs wired and wireless and the price would be more in line with Brick-link reseller prizing. 80€ for a box that is 20 on Bricklink is rediculous.

Proprietary batteries would be expensive to buy, difficult to ship/find and you could only use it for LEGO. AAs are accessible all around the world and can be used with other electronic devices as well. Rechageable AAs are available widely for a fair price nowadays.

Does anybody have a link to the toy-law behind this cursed battery cover change? Luckily I have enough old models, and they are still cheap on Bricklink. The main problem with Lego is that if you write your building instructions for 3 year olds (yes, also the Liebherr crawler crane is written for undeveloped prefrontal cortexes), you get your models treated as kids toys and thus put under stupid screw laws.

If only they were using this "update" to reduce the price... About the cracking sound, I don't know why people don't like it, I mean, the zetros is awfully slow ( and even slower than that ) so except for testing purposes or really dumb driver, you won't go into a wall, right? Also, it could be really cool if Lego use the screw version of the hub to propose an alternative battery system with a battery rather 6 AA batteries, so that we can just charge it and go rather than consuming AA... I saw that a company made a 3D element that is compatible and allow you to do it, but it would be cool if lego was doing it too...

  • @RacingBrick

Cracking does not only occur if you drive it against the wall, that's simply the quickest way to make it happen. I first noticed it after doing lots of climb tests in a row, so that was a high load but should be considered as normal usage.

At 8:25 you say you will need a new (second) sample to compare, why? Should Lego not provide you with the different parts for free (except the Hub)? They gave you faulty product to beging with, which they clearly acknowledged, otherwise they would not have made so many changes.

control+ and hub are both a fail. control+ because you cant personalize as it was/is is in powered up. hub can support up to 4 motors so you cant use it for moc (tank, forklift, etc). also the hub cant' manage the XL motor power so limits this as a L motor.

They are not. It is a marvel of engineering. You get open source bootloader, 4 dual function ports capable of reading both an I2C sensor and driving servo motors at once, you get full 5.1 Bluetooth with 100m range, a RGB led, 3-axis g-force sensor and proper memory for loading programs for 20€. That is INSANE. Lego only screwed up the controlling software, the firmware is rock solid and open for creativity and fan-made controllers of all sorts. Just stop whining, and code some cool controllers with a Microbit V2 at the heart.
