Those rear tires are a deal-breaker for me. I'd never be able to look at it and not see the problem.

I was thinking the same, but still ended up getting it. As a display piece, it is not THAT MUCH visible, as the rear tires are still placed wider than the front, so you get a sort of optical illusion which makes the rear appear wider. But still I agree that with the price I paid for, there should have been a custom mold. Maybe for future sets if this one sells well ?

I wonder why they didn't make the new front slope out of white plastic and print it with red on the top. Lego's red printing is much nicer, and that gap wouldn't have been as obvious.

Dual molding - they have done it before! Sigh... You're right. Would have fixed the issue...

That big wedge up front would have looked better in white with red printed, maybe. Assuming the red would be printed till the edge.

For $80 you'd think they'd put a little more care into the printing for the helmet but nope. Very disappointing to see lego not only overprice their adult sets but get away with not putting effort into their premium adult brand they keep promoting.

Printing on a curve has alway had this issue and Lego has not tried to fix it. We are lucky there are any prints as stickers are cheaper and preferred most the time.

Not solely the printing application itself, but also the graphic design. There's no second lower pinstripe in the deep blue color of the Brazilian flag! I understand having to substitute the iconography of the Marlboro brand template (EA/Codemasters had also done this for F1 2019) for the newage Senna "S" logo, but by in large, complete omission of the other stripe is essentially doing half the job. I'm not sure if it's a limitation of the printing able to be done on the mold, but surely this would have been the time to engineer and pioneer that new ability.

@@carlbenfield2971 I'm sorry but after 20 years of making r2d2 figures they should've figured it out by now.

LEGO in all their glory, prestige and capabilities can barely make prints that are opaque nor properly straight, is perfectly unwilling to make specialized pieces when it's clear regular pieces just won't work and still charge you insanely high prices. Meanwhile operating in some shed in the middle of Poland, Cobi is just casually capable of printing across 4 different pieces, going in 3 different directions, and consistently get perfect alignment, and great color consistency while simultaneously introducing 6 new specialized pieces in one set, then proceed to just charge you like what, $50? Seriously, LEGO has no excuse for using so many stickers, and especially having such laughably bad print quality on their adult-oriented "premium" sets.

Super specialized pieces aren't a positive most of the time since you can't really reuse them in your own creations. Also, Lego does introduce specialized pieces all the time, this set even introduced a couple, they just avoid doing ultra extremely specific pieces that can only be used for 1 specific thing and nothing else if they can. You're being kinda disingenuous with that comparison.

You're exactly right about Cobi. Ditto Pantasy out of China: they make sets with bricks that easily rival or surpass those of Lego, have some extremely cool and unusual designs, and come with beautifully printed pieces. All way, way cheaper than Lego.

@@leetri To be fair yes, LEGO prioritizes the versatility of a specialized piece while Cobi prioritizes accuracy above all. But the prices that LEGO charges just because of one or two large specialized pieces are still insanely steep in my opinion, especially with all the issues on print quality and color consistency. Also I should've made this more clear, my point in specialized pieces is not that they should be in everything, it's that LEGO should just make them when it's clear existing pieces don't work. LEGO recycling the front tires for the rear tires is just cheap and lazy, they've already went ahead and made new tires and suspension pieces and now they suddenly can't make slightly larger versions of those tires? Like what?

that helmet... oh that makes my heart ache... for the first printed helmet we've gotten in decades I think, that really hurts...

The printing on the helmet, like your R2s, are an issue with the US factories. Sets in Europe and other regions don’t have this issue. If you request a replacement and they send it from Denmark, it should be fine.

what is the problem to make small and big tires? and why can't we have one size for f1 cars? technic, speed champion and now icons size.

That front red piece with the white print is quite impressive on your model, mine is extremely pink, almost to a point of unacceptability. It's an absolute eyesore. Still really disappointed that LEGO can get away with it on such a premium display model.

I thought it was expensive but while building it... I realized that the price is justified with size, build experience, cool techniques and wonderful look at the end.

Mine just arrived of Friday. I am so excited to revisit this review when I’m done.

Does anyone remember the tiny little, $2 Shell sets from 25 years ago? They were pretty much what a polybag is today but were sold at Shell with their logo. So it's nice to have Shell back with LEGO.

Shell were actually a really long time partner with Lego. Going all the way back to a Shell oil drilling rig set! Don't think that one would fly today..

That red and white front nosecone piece I think would've looked better if they printed red on white.

Was excited for this a lot, but the stickers and the front red/white are a deal breaker on this for me.

I wish I could like this set, but I can't get past the bulky nose and narrow tires. I would have preferred a model that has no steering and more accurate nose shaping.

i have bought the marlboro stickers to go on the car and even the senna name on top of air-intake on the engine cover.

Glad to see that the nose print you got is opaque enough. Mine seems a bit off compared to yours, but the lighting might also influence my perception. Personally, they should've gone with a white piece and then print it with red. Even if the printing pad wouldn't fill in the bottom of the part with red, the white pieces below would make it blend perfectly. And I just noticed that my helmet print is also wobbly #MyR2D2😅

As a Brazilian that saw some ofAirton Senna’s wins I am very disappointed. The nose of the car is horrible, the back tires totally wrong. And helmet?, come one! The totally misaligned print and the missing blue line is unjustifiable.

Got this and the modern McLaren set; waiting to put them together while I watch the Japan GP. 😊

Oh neat! I hope this opens the door for some vintage NASCAR sets in the future!

I would have probably gotten it, but as a display set I would have liked to see the Marlboro logos. I understand why they didn’t do it though. I would have liked the black lotus car so they didn’t need to leave anything major out.

Interesting... my copy has near perfect helmet print positioning but the white prints on the red pieces of the car look almost pink. I wonder if the factories servicing different global regions have different printing techniques that make the products inconsistent.

The nosecone piece should have been moulded in white with red printing. I think that would have worked better

If it was a generic racing car, a toy for 50 dollars, I wouldn't see a problem. But as a display model that somehow honours the legendary Ayrton Senna, then it's just gone down the drain. Nigel certainly wouldn't have given this Ayrton a ride :)

the helmet is also missing the blue stripe under the green one. like halfway on the helmet.

This truly looks spectacular, and I'm not even a car guy! I'm surprised it's only $80, to be honest

I think it would looked better if the new slope piece was instead molded in white and printed with red at the top. Surely the designers considered this. I wonder why they did the inverse instead.

Hadn't even considered that the bizarre print for that front piece could have been the result of licensing. And it's kinda weird, considering A) apart from this bit, they mostly nailed the livery (even when the brand name is missing, which was the case for some races), and B) over the years I've seen so many toy and model cars with that same Iconic livery, some even with the brand name. I guess in the past no one cared about licensing, they just thought of it as free advertisement? But yeah, that piece is IMHO the worst part of this set, both the design and the execution. Should get that piece in white and paint a better one myself. The rear tires are the other major flaw, I can only hope they introduce wider versions in the future. Too bad also about those stickers and their not so great color matching. And that helmet print is just a bad joke. It's a shame because so much of it is very good, as a whole this could have been great. But these are all significant flaws. That didn't stop me from buying it though, at RRP even when it's already widely available at 15% (or more) discount. But hey, I wanted that Classic Space GWP, and just needed this to make the threshold...

There’s a couple Japanese model kits of this car that have that red chevron shape but without the Marlboro branding. I wonder if they could get away with it and lego played it safe

I think they're being safe after the really creepy Mission Winnow controversy.

LEGO definitely cheaped out with Ayrton Senna, bad quality prints and some design choices but the livery printing, detailed engine and presence from a ground view low angle make this a bittersweet set for me. i'l buy this when on sale for its Formula One History and just getting a Senna fig is welcomed but it could have been executed better by 10%

Thanks for doing that photoshop to show us what the nose piece would look like printed down to the edge. It would definitely make a difference. Lots of prints here, though it would be better if there were no stickers. The plaques should have been printed. Is it really only Star Wars sets that are guaranteed printed plaques? That's bull, if that's the case. Other than that, it's a pretty awesome rendition of the car.

The tires are a letdown, but my main complaint is that the nose doesn't look anything like the MP4/4. It's too long, too narrow, and too curved. I would've paid a lot more for an accurate set, but I can't even justify buying this.

The prints are a nice colour match, but then the stickers don't match their tiles and then the white on red printed nose just comes up pinkish - 3 different colour combos isnt good

This set is… quite the interesting anomaly. A lot done well, seemingly a lot done poorly. I feel bad for fans of it, even with all the good parts of it.

I didn't get this one of the weird backwheels, those needed to be bigger as the real one.

Where is Lego Optimus Prime? Is he safe? Is he alright?

Seeing a recent review for the Mega Bloks Ash & Pikachu set just makes me sad as a Lego collector for how bad the quality has gotten with Lego bricks theses days. Grip strength and consistency are still great but every other aspect of the bricks is worse. Its starting to look like Lego is the knock off brand. They will never compete on print quality, color matching across bricks, and other things like this anymore because they aren't interest. Seeing what Mega Bloks can do with perfect prints on any color with no bleeding through (plus all the way down the sides and up to the edge of the bricks) and lined up across multiple bricks just makes me realize how many corners Lego is cutting for higher profit margins at the expense of us, the consumer. Lego is no longer the best in the industry. Even the Chinese brands bricks are are a near exact match in qualities like grip and consistency these days but also have much better prints and color matching. It is only Lego with this problem in the building bricks market and its because they are cheap and they are intentionally choosing poor quality for higher profits because everyone else in the industry can do it for less money. I love Lego and I hope they will fix it one day but its been like this so long and they just keep increasing sales so I suspect, nothing will ever change.

Hey JANG. Ask them for another helmet, if mine is that bad i will be asking for a replace, you are paying premium for this, here in NZ its only $110nzd which is a deal for near 700 pieces, this would normal be $140 for us at the brick count. We got 4 in our toy store as it is on location meaning they can not make enough of them.

So the face and hair doesn't do it for me ethier, maybe the eyes are too big and not narrowed/slender enough, the helmet for mine isn't wonky like yours but it looks like it at the edges of the visor points (shame your helmet isn't great) I understand the whole Marlboro thing but even on cars when not using the advertisement still has the famous red arch look (but I too thought in an extreme case where the colour shapes are cigarette representation its not allowed) That rear peice has a better curve so we know it's possible to print it. Also while I don't like the red border on the front piece that not shaped correctly what's worse is that the white edge is not straight instead it follows the Lego brick edge ridges. As a Lego and F1 fan there's a lot not right here (Infact there's a better looking on in minifig scale on rebrickable I believe somewhere). But as Senna Fan I'm so happy we have merch that's official (notice the back of the manual in bottom right corner Senna foundation and donation to kids of brazil❤). I mean I've had the Lego Senna MacLean 6stud wide car(terrible car) with some Senna stuff in my display case only because it's official Senna logo printed in Lego. Now when this news came I thought it wasnt a real offical Lego set, never thought we'd ever get this by a long shot because the numbers point to current cars etc to make Lego money. So I guess I'm saying even at 100$ cad which feels always more expensive then the American price (even with what you say about our dollar) I am the minority that gonna get the set because it's a Senna thing. 3/4 finished building it now and it's expensive price to part ratio but the build is well worth it for the cost, no random colours for the meat of the build - much thought went to many details and even the air ducts in the front feel like it with the placement of colours represents air coolers etc. on a last note the white panels under the car I thought might represent a skid plates all be it it's not black

The minifig is definitely a letdown. The rest of the set is pretty superb. I am a big Ayrton fan, so I will get it for sure.

the missed oportunity by not making different rear tyres is really mind-boggling in my opinion.. they could have made kits of all the significant f1 cars in history and they would have sold a boatload of them.. just another example of the weong people making decisions..

Minifig looks more like Snape than Senna

Wheels, wheels and again wheels. This is Icons set which calls for higher detail than City or even Speed Champions set. It must be only me but I think Lego is lacking the quality of a brick leader lately.

I would definitely complain via customer service about the wonky helmet - that is so unacceptable. And considering how well they can print mini dolls, they really don't have any excuse any more. The white on the minifig is horrible. And I recently opened the latest CMF series, which sometimes are printed better - but shocked at how the yellow flesh tone was pink on the exercise/workout woman minifig - her abs & and lower back don't look like they're exposed, but a slightly faded extension of the workout top. They can't seem to get opacity right for any minifigs these days - CMF or set ones, and for a collectable set like this, we are paying $$$ for quality. I know much joking has been had about your wonky astromech collection, but this wonkiness is just too far. I hope you're able to get a replacement from TLG for this - I highly doubt they will ever release another Senna helmet so having a good one seems like it's something people who buy this deserve to have!

No, this is very, very, significantly larger. Look at the minifig. This in a larger scale than the Creator Expert / Icons 911 Turbo, blue Mustang, red classic Vette, etc., roughly 1/9th to the real thing.

Yeah. Lego cheaped out this one and some other important sets. If it has historical importance, you really should have do it properly. Or dont do it. These kind of designs are not like Architecture sets like resembling the building but more like a sketch. They have to be realistic. Which this set is not.

The curse of the wonky prints on round pieces continues. 🥲 I am kinda sad about the rear wheels, they really do look noticeably narrower than they should have been. Also kinda surprised about the price too, fully expected them to ask more for something like this. Obviously not cheap regardless, but thought it's gonna be worse. 😅

I’m not going to be buying this set, but seeing that engine (and Jang’s enthusiasm for it) reminded me why I love Lego so much
